Using static IP, my download speed is around 3 MB/s.

Using dynamic IP, my download speed is around 9 MB/s.

Please rectify.

Recent chats with the MR support about my poor speeds has been.... Enlightening.

If you are keen to try MR, be aware that wireless speeds of 20mbps is within their service expections. Of course, several issues that affect WiFi is out of their control hence the 20mbps speeds are acceptable.

So be aware of this when you want to try MR. In case you really hit such speeds on WiFi.

I think any other ISP is also the same for Wi-Fi.

But if wired, hmm, then must think twice. But for the price, I think is just nice for mass market who dun wan steep entry lor.

They are telling you 20mbps its because majority of the 300mbps Wireless N routers on the market provides nothing north of 50mbps, even if the antenna of the router touches the wireless chipset of your device/laptop.

In short if you sit beside the router its going to be 40mbps plus, and further away you are, the worse it gets. Given that most of us stays in HDB, 20mbps is a possible speed.

If you want good wifi speeds, u got to pay for equipment, top dollar (over 100 bucks) for the top wireless routers for the market, such as a good wireless n or ac router that will set you back few hundred bucks (look at Asus's top end ones, not the free RT-N15 given by MR) + a decent wireless adaptor.

It has got nothing to do with the RSP/ISP

I remember last time was about simultaneous connections, especially when it comes to torrenting the router will easily crash. Then Dlink came up with their gamer's router which supports 1000 simultaneous connections (1000 is puny in today's standard :s13:) which I spent $150 bucks on it and junk my free WRT54G aside.

Its the same story now just that its about wifi speeds instead and that price tag is surely getting heavier... :s22:

i beg to differ. while i agree with all the info you laid out, very educational for a noob user like me, i feel that MR's cso should have explained what u just did and offer me an option to upgrade my router to a better one, and not just tell me its acceptable speed (20mbps) and its affected by a variety of things.

I would be open to buying a better router and would feel infinitely much better knowing that I am being educated as a non power user consumer.

your response makes me feel slightly better that MR is not being dodgy about service speeds. Thanks!

p.s: are you able to recommend a router for me from asus? i am currently using the RT15U from MR. thanks!

no problem.

I am not using Asus router myself but the good ones are the N56U, N66U. They recently expanded their range to include wireless ac which I guess are safe to get as well but are super expensive. Currently MR's connection a decent wireless N router should be enough, the N66U should suffice but you have to understand it won't be as good as, and if its as good it wont be as stable as using a wired connection

Note that for mobilephones, gaming consoles performance might differ. If you are going to want to improve that do google around or ask around for more information.

And note that the worst hit people are users with Fast Ethernet port (Those not Gigabit ones) that are commonly found in:

Apple Airport Express (Not Extreme one which has AC and 4X Gigabit)

Budget laptops (<$1k with i7 + 4GB RAM + ATI GPU spec from Dell is one example)

If they use Wired, they are going to max out around 90Mbps, but if they use a better router, it is possible to max out 100+Mbps as well, depending on distance and the adapters used and the Wi-Fi congestion issue.

You mean nowadays they still make non gigabit ethernet? good grief :s22:

well i dont have an option to use wired connection since the ONT and router is sitting at my tv console in my living room while my set up is in my room, just one wall away (3 room hdb flat as compared to bigger flats).

i can understand that wired is the best connection but i need it better than the current 20mbps (and thats just on a good day, today its 10mbps on BBQ) when playing a game like LoL.

I guess I have to hire a contractor to wire up my place for constant wired connection. :/
