innovate means to introduce something new; make changes in anything established.

misrepresentation means to represent incorrectly, improperly, or falsely, to represent in an unsatisfactory manner.

if i can only get 10mbps international speed for my 25mbps cable plan, i don't mind the telco selling it as a 10mbps plan, i would still subscribe to it

but

if the telco overstates the speed but under deliver, that's call lying not innovation

if you do a local speed test of cause it is fast but the problem is we all consume content from international sites

the international bandwidth is limited as it is very expensive

only when u can afford a lease line then will you have dedicated bandwidth

i think u need to go back to school

i give u a good example

my cable plan used to be 3mbps

but

i always get more than 3mbps even on international speed

i am very happy

as the plan under promise and over delivered

but

the fibre and 4G are doing the opposite

that is why u notice so many people are complaining on this forum and the telcos facebook page

this does not do singapore any good as IDA is trying to promote our country as an IT hub for development of ICT solutions to improve productivity

i'm not saying that 100% of the internet using visiting google all at the same time

i'm talking about the promised bandwidth and the delivered bandwidth is not the same

if you are IT inclined of cause u know but for the normal consumer, he would not be happy that he brought something that doesn't do what it say it would deliver

i hope IDA would ask telco to state both local and international speed in BIG fonts when they advertise their plan

and not small print where nobody can see for international speed

not saying any isp but in general the unhealthy advertising environment that is misleading consumers

thanks :)

IDA don't seem to have power to regulate these sort of marketing, but ASAS does have have some bite, public can report at - Submit ASAS Complaint

But IDA has done some good for us by objectively measuring ISP performance and publishing the results here: Consumer Broadband Report

If you compare the charts, MyRepublic isn't a good performer unlike what their ads like to claim.

Their new 1Gbps ad even has a 'clever' qualification which makes the 1Gbps meaningless...

Only video streaming, gaming, surfing & VoIP? These don't require 1Gbps, so the guarantee is essentially worthless.

Always read fine print, Myrepublic don't state the expected speed but they are 100% protected from customer's complaints by this para:

i wonder how many home users' equipments can support the full 1Gbps transmission supposedly the ISP is able to provide. :s22:

Sadly hor. Others are 24/25. I already behind behind lei. Haha. Don't worry. Everyone on beta will get it by 31 March.

I'm on the beta, but still have not received any call yet.

Understand that all the calls will be done by this week and all installations done by 31 March.

Hopefully MR keeps to its promise. 2 more workings days this week for them to call me.

Speedtest result can varies by having a better route or providing direct connection to a particular speed test server. However, we choose not to do so which indirectly result in a 'slower' speed. Not that we are stating anyone is cheating but it does happen =).

5. Internet speed testers measure connections speed.

False, nearly all internet speed testing applications do not measure speed at all but instead measure capacity. That is not specifically a problem except the person running the test is generally not aware of the difference and accepts the result as the connection speed that will be achieved. Unfortunately a capacity measure just defines how much data the connection can hold, not the throughput performance of the connection. Only the throughput governs the user application experience with very few exceptions. Furthermore most Internet test applications do not measure capacity accurately which results in the testing user being misinformed further.

Myth about internet speed

Myth about internet speed

I understand that speedtest is not a good gauge for Internet speed.

However, is there a way for MR subscribers to test their download/upload speed since how fast or slow is very subjective to individuals?

When MR sells you a 1Gbps plan (or indeed any operator with any plan), it just means that your last-mile connection to your ISP's local router/switch is capable of transporting data at a theoretical 1Gbps (raw signal information).

Your download/upload speed (as measured by tools like speedtest.net) tries to download/upload some data from a known, managed server to test your connection to that particular server.

For MR to let you test your plan, they can simply host their own 'speedtest' server right at their data center which is at a minimal number of hops away to you. You can see some numbers which makes you go "WOW", but that will not be reflective of your internet speed experience at all. Because you won't be accessing content from MR 99.999999% of the time.

The servers which host the content which you want (e.g. Facebook.com, Google.com, Youtube.com) are not hosted within MR's managed network. All MR can do is to make sure they have proper peering agreements with other ISPs that host those content. You will almost never get anywhere near your 1Gbps capacity.

What will be a useful scenario that will maximize your 1Gbps capacity? Interestingly enough, BitTorrent. If you are downloading chunks of data from other MR subscribers, ideally the traffic will be routed exclusively within MR's managed network. If all of MR's interconnects within their managed network is "fat" enough, you could see your download speed closing in on the magical 1Gbps capacity.

Exactly =). We certainly don't want to to 'cheat' in speed test results or provide 'fiber truth' or somehow won 'best isp' for 5years straight =).
