Hi Logan,

do you use 18TB Toshiba enterprise drive in ur Synology NAS? If not, any reason like compatibility, noise, not ready to upgrade etc?

I am seriously considering to get the Toshiba MG09 18TB for my new NAS.

not yet, since i still have a few spare 16TB on hand, but when that runs out, I'll look at the price:capacity sweetspot and make a decision on what to get.

SATA drives are SATA drives. generally, custom firmware enables specific vendor specific features, but does not prevent it from being used.

to use syno drives or not, depends on your risk appetitle.

if low, pay the syno tax and buy peace of mind for now.

if high, then try non-syno drives. just be prepared for little curveballs synology will throw in the future. eg upgrading NAS, HDD firmware upgrade, re-install on same nas to newer DSM etc.
on some of the rack stations, Syno was reported to have disabled SMART for untested drives (note: untested, not incompatible).

or, explore non-syno or DIY NAS. you escape this problem.

I will power down the NAS/storage server properly, remove the disks and spray them with a compressed air can.

At home and work I use a smaller size air compressor to blow my disk and connectors yearly as part of the maintenance regime for my storage servers. More dusty environment, I will do it twice a year.

tried, didn't work. i even disassembled the NAS, took out the motherboard to clean.

in fact, after used compressed air, both tray 4 and tray 2 stopped working. i left the NAS at a slightly sunny but ventilated place for a while, tray 4 is back, but tray 2 is still unable to detect any disk. maybe i should wait for a few days...

Synology NAS getting more expensive.

DS1621+ is costing HK$7200.00.

Back when I bought the DS1618+ it was only HK$5225.00

Synology hard disks are even more ridiculously expensive. 18TB HGST is HK$1921.00

Hoping my 1618+ will last. Just need to figure out how to add storage space.

My DS411+ still running after more than 12 years. Only replacement is the internal fan.

Have a DS1621+. Just got two 16tb drives to move some data from NAS as offline cold storage. Can I just connect the drives to the eSata port and mount it as an external drive to move the data?

All drive bays are full

Just a suggestion.

If the data is of paramount importance, maybe it is time to stop trying to make it work. Back it up, and migrate to a new NAS/storage server.

17tb data... hard to back it up.

disk 2 is dead i think, tried a spare 6tb disk in bay 2 and it is detected. ordered a new 8tb red.

Same question, I am looking for a simple/cheap UPS, it only needs to notify the Synology to shut down when there is a power outage.

cannot mix and match capacity like this. The replacement unit should be same or larger (assuming you are on SHR). Brand or model mixed doesn't really matter.

Personally I prefer Toshiba MG series. The people here prefers the Ironwolf series.

Isn't the Nucleus Connect box an ONT ?
You're supposed to connect your router btw, usually ASUS/TP-Link etc etc

First and foremost, backup a copy of your data first if it is important.

Following, I will power down the NAS, remove the "missing disk" and slot it back in again, then power it up.

If it comes online after powering up, will reformat, re-silver (rebuild) the volume and monitor a few days/weeks. Since Synology is running on Linux, you can just go into the Terminal/Console and check on the disk health using command. You can easily find online instructions on how to do so if you are not Linux-savvy.
