need some advise which of the following is a better pick

Toshiba MG Series Enterprise 12TB @ S$365 (S$30.41/TB)
Seagate IronWolf Pro 12TB @ S$370.56 (S$30.88/TB)

personal preference and opinion. Just choosing between the Toshiba MG vs Seagate IronWolf Pro, I'd take the Toshiba over the Seagate
(if it is comparing with other brands/series, my answer may change, but for now, it's just comparing the above 2)

Edit: saw that there's Toshiba N300 NAS series, are these this a better option over MG?
Toshiba N300 12TB @S$314.90 (S$26.24/TB)
Toshiba N300 14TB @S$416.50 (S$29.75/TB)
Toshiba N300 16TB @S$466.87 (S$29.18/TB)
Toshiba N300 18TB @S$498.86 (S$27.71/TB)

again personal preference and opinion. I went from using N300 to the MG series.
didn't have a problem with the N300s, but at that time, I got a better price on the MG drives. LIked them, stayed with them.

Hello, I am planning to upgrade to DS1522+ but I can wait to DS1524+ DS1525+ in the next 6 months. What is the current trend of reliable NAS hard drives? Online reviews are mixed but generally, the trend is Seagate Ironwolf Pro and Toshiba N300?

Are those Seagate China drives in Lazada reliable even though the warranty is shorter?

Did you manage to try them? They're very tempting as price point wise, they seem much lower.
But somehow, I feel like there's a scam whenever something is too cheap.
It is much cheaper than getting from reputable places like Amazon US.

I'm running around 10 x 18 TB Seagate Exos drives which were bought from a carousell seller, these are parallel import drives where the seller gives 3 months warranty for 1 for 1, then it be a top up to send back for warranty claims (or swap). These drives originally were delivered as part of a larger server / nas array that were not required and end up being sold on the grey market, so the original warranty is attached to the oem of the equipment and not seagate.

Been running all 10 drives for around 130 days with no issues, I like to deal with this seller as the drives arrive to his place very well cushioned (not all sellers get such good delivery packaging). I've also tested and verified the drives and its all good after running a series of test.

To be honest with regards to drive failure it's abit of heng xuay, this is my own experience with such drives but I cannot say if the online seller is legit

What are the chances that more than 2 or 3 drives in an NAS died?

Happened to me. New drives, less than 1 year old. 3 drives dead in a space of 2 months.

No more cheap drives for me. I only use HGST. These 7200rpm enterprise drives are fast and very durable.

No matter how insignificant your data is, when hard drive/s failed in an NAS, the trouble of recovery is/can be very painful and frustrating.

I reckon its heng xuay maybe you got a batch that someone dropped in the loading bay? at times I'll be running like 40 plus drives at once all high capacity (ironwolf pro/exos drives) and the at most it be a bad sector on an occasional drive.

I must have changed a 100ish drives from constantly upgraded the capacity and its happened around 4 - 5 times. Only WD drives I got IO errors which happened twice of a batch of 4 drives

agree on HGST. my WD branded ex-HGST "WUH" series (former "HUH") still holding up well for the past 2 years. too early to make judgement on longevity for now (eg impact of production processes, cost-down parts/vendor replacement programs etc)

Hello! I am came across this NAS thingy and have some questions on if I need a NAS. Hoping you experts can give some advice.

I don't even know if I need one? I have a 100gb google drive and its running out of space soon(am at 95gb usage already). Had to delete some videos in order to delay upgrading to 200gb google drive.

I'm not a photographer but as I am reaching my 40s very soon, I would like to start to take more videos and photos for memories sake. Is it possible to have my videos and photos stored on my NAS without it being on my phone? So whenever I want to access it, it will display on my phone or devices without the files stored on my phone permanently? So viewing my media is like viewing it on IG or Youtube but on higher definition without compromising the quality.

I must admit also when I first wanted to explore the option of having NAS is because I want to run docker on it to host teslamate so I can also track my car's statistics.

I also do watch downloaded movies(that cant be found on netflix or disneyplus) on my android phone, ipad or android TV. Will I be able to stream the videos onto my devices from my NAS?

Oh also, sometimes i use google drive to move files from my ipad to android and vice versa since android cant use airdrop. using NAS should be as easy as using google drive right

Lastly, if the recommendation is yes, NAS is helpful for my situation, which NAS should i go for? And where can i get good deals on it?

Thanks in advance!

Use Google Drive's 2 TB plan if you want no-frills, good speed, and ease of access. With NAS, you need to maintain the hardware and operation yourself.

Maybe better to continue using Google Drive for your photos and records of memories. Coz it is not easy to properly and competently maintain your storage system (aka NAS). If your NAS storage KKK (kong ka kiao), you will lose all your memories with it. I have known a few who cried over it, after losing all their memories with their NAS. There might be too many aspects (Eg. security and redundancy) to look out for if you are not a storage/network-savvy individual.

For movies and any other data/content which you "may lose" or "afford to lose", can store it in a NAS with some form of RAID or similar. Since you are in a "Synology NAS owner thread", I assumed you are looking for one from Synology. Suggest looking at models with x86 Intel HW which support HW transcoding. Preferably to start with a NAS unit with 4 disk slots or more. As for the choice of media server hosting, can look at PLEX, Jellyfin and Emby. Suggest to lock down external access to your media server and access it through a VPN for security reasons.
