I used to work in HR & base on my experience, some organization will pay lower for ACCA compare to a degree holder for the same position.

Ultimately, it all depends on your work experience, negotiation skill, connections and luck. If you are a local degree holder, chances of securing a first job is much higher compare to ACCA/ degree holder (especially in the government sector). Otherwise a degree holder and ACCA has an equal chance.

I worked in the accounting sector and I have seen people with ACCA commanding a much higher salary than a degree holder.

ACCA is quite limited to accounting related jobs compare to a degree.

I believe you seen people with ACCA commanding a much higher salary than a degree holder is during pre-CA era.

I though ACCA exam should be more easier since you have those type of '10 years series questions' to drill the answers into your head compare to degree questions where nope of them will come out the next term.

By the way, do you mean degree from University College Dublin (UCD) offer by Kaplan? Mostly there are no same courses offer by Distance learning mode in on campus.

Why can't you pass your NRIC & ask someone to do ACCA exam for you since nobody know who you are compare to degree exam when your classmates are sitting next to you?

I do not agree with you. If you do a job search, you will see that that prospective employers also look for candidates with a degree or ACCA equivalent. Ultimately, the type of job you can find depends on the experience you accumulated. If I have prior work experience in advisory which involved bank audits, my chances of getting a job in the banking industry is definitely much higher as compared to someone who only does general audit.

It might be true that current ACCA holders who have yet to obtain the CA membership might find it harder to get jobs. However, the situation might change after March 2016.

I think this is misleading.

CPA & CA are practicing certificates while ACCA is a qualification like a degree to help you get practicing certificate in Singapore.

If you ever needs to do audit work overseas, then you can consider looking at CIMA, ICAEW (from ACA path), ACCA & CPA Australia. CIMA cannot do audit work. Getting qualification from places like ACCA does not auto mean you get the Practising certificate to do audit work in UK.

So if you are not doing audit work in overseas, why will anyone even talk about other qualification that lead to Practising certificate in the first place when one should focus on CA Sg?

Popular accounting qualifications in Singapore (by percentage)

36.0% ACCA
32.3% CPA (other countries)
11.8% CPA Australia
11.0% CA Singapore
4.8% ACA
4.2% CIMA

If ACCA is like 10 year series question, the pass rate would not be so low. Check out the link here http://www.accaglobal.com/sg/en/stu...-resources/pass-rates-professional-exams.html.

FYI, I took the ACCA exam myself and most of the question in the professional papers never repeat itself. In order to pass the exams, you must demonstrate a strong understanding of the subject matter.

I do not agree with you. If I will to hire a graduate for position like HR, do you think I will hire accounting degree holder or ACCA holder?

Most of the recruiters from recruitment firm are fresh graduates without any knowledge & they just copy & paste 'degree or ACCA equivalent'. All are waiting for answer on March 2016 & a lot of organizations are accepting less ACCA graduate or no longer accept them for graduate position since CA era (I think those from Big4 can confirm about this). Please see below link for an organzation downgrade ACCA equivalent to Diploma level.

Let stop debating over this ACCA or Degree is harder. The thing is I agree both ACCA & Degree is never easy to pass.

However when your comments make a degree so worthless make me feel injustice to degree holders especially there are undergraduate who fail to get his degree.

Technically speaking, I wont hire both graduates. The reason is because they do not have the necessary skill and expertise to work in the HR. I would find somebody with the relevant degree.

How about this position above? The candidate just need to pass ACCA level 2 or level 3

FYI, Big 4 also accept less candidates from other degree with the exception that your degree come from the 3 local university or your qualification is obtained from overseas.

However Big 4 does accept ACCA graduate or other degree holders with the relevant audit experience.

Personally I never think that a degree or ACCA is worthless. Whether you can get a job just depend on how your prospective employers value your qualification which again is rather subjective.

Nowadays, one person needs to do a lot of jobs such as Office Manager (or Admin cum Account cum HR) position. So a full accounting degree course will touch on business related modules that suitable for degree graduate to fill that position compare ACCA holder that only focus on accounting modules.

That job advertisement is from recruitment firm & it give me the feeling that he just blindly cut & paste from his client job description without finding out or advice his client. Both you & I know what caliber should the candidate be to be worth call Accountant & the different between ACCA Lv 2 & 3.

Want to debate also can. Any qualification that does not lead to practicing certificate such as Diploma in Accounting are not professional qualification & consider easier compare to professional qualification like Accounting Degree. A professional qualification is a must to have in order to help you get practicing certificate. Sorry to be rude but here it go...

Last time, an accounting degree & ACCA are both professional qualification to get CPA Sg but ACCA is never a degree. So which one is more professional?

Now an accounting degree can consider professional qualification but not ACCA because it now cannot help to get CA Sg. So which one sound more like professional qualification?

Now any degree can get CA Sg but not ACCA, does this mean degree is more qualified to consider professional qualification compare to ACCA? To add on, can I safe to say that Accounting related jobs like Accountant is a professional occupation but there is no professional qualification for accounting in Sg?

What's the debate about? Degree Cfm easier to pass than professional qualification... No fight, end of story.

Okay mate... I think you need to chill over the difficulty level of your degree..

I took a degree and am now taking ACA. I can tell you the degree was a breeze and most of my colleagues think so too...

So you took your degree, but didn't even take ACCA, I don't see how you can keep on quoting some description from websites and say that ACCA is easier. Plus, ACCA is a progressional qualification so it's more likely to be more rigorous as compared to a academic degree...

Also, I thought ACCA currently in consulting with SQP in sg? Very likely they will be chartered through it the pathway too.

The Plural of Anecdote Is Not Evidence. I hope you can re-read your own post, and realize you've made a poor argument. I'm not disagreeing with you - just pointing this sort of reasoning is pretty much worthless in a debate.

Many of my friends felt that ACCA was a breeze compared to a degree programme. This sort of personal experience is of poor relevance to an argument.

I am not discounting or implying ACCA is lousy. It's a fact that it's an internationally recognized, rigorous, and rather prestigious professional qualification that many are working towards.

But if you put it next to an academic qualification, there is little basis for a fair comparison. You can't just justify your position with something like "I took both and I felt X was easier". I can easily counter this position by saying only my poly friends who's GPA were too low to enter into a local uni had no choice but to take ACCA, and they passed it with ease when they would have struggled in a local uni programme.

This is also why in an earlier post I quoted, SAC is considering the Hong Kong approach. That is, to treat ACCA as a professional qualification, while requiring an academic qualification for admission to the SQP programme. Academic Qualifications have their own set of accreditation and own standards for evaluation.

Err...How to compare ACCA with degree ?

One is professional qualification (certification), one is academic qualification (certification)...

No ?
