Dear all gurus out there,

I just bought a ASUS notebook (K401UQ-FA074T) and I have been getting weird problems such as long startup time (25seconds or so), and random lag spikes (high disk ultilization @ 99%) lasting 2.5minutes long.

Was told by asus service center staff that this is normal. I have my doubts. Could gurus help check the validity of his claim? Or could anyone with the same laptop confirm please?

Specs
I7-7500U
2.7GH, 8gb ram ddr4
SSD 24GB
HD 1TB

TIA, sincerely!!

Hello!

What operating system are you on? :zotto:
Here are couple of steps that you can do

1. Disable start up programmes
2. Disable certain settings on Windows 10

Hi Intrinion, thanks for the quick reply, WIN 10 home.

It is actually a brand new laptop, nothing much installed. Should it still take this long?

Also I should mention that I have sent this laptop to ASUS service center for thrice back and forth, as soon as I noticed this problem. After being sick of doing the same thing over and over again, I have decided to seek gurus opinion here

Your new laptop is full of bloatware, so slow down to a point you can feel it.

All Asus softwares except Smart Gestures.

Things which I feel are unnecessary:?
- Splendid (an eye care protection software - the latest Windows 10 creator's update includes night mode which is basically the same)

- Asus gifts - basically a link to free softwares are unnecessary

Dont have access to a terminal now. Will advice you on what Win10 settings to disable :)

Also able to confirm the following claim by the staff i have been thinking about and doubtful with?

1) staff told me up to 50s startup time is normal
2) staff told me random lag spikes (high disk utilization of 99%) not more than 5mins is normal

First, reinstall a clean version of Windows10. Don't bother to install any of those asus softwares.
Then install windows creator update.
Boot up should be about 10-15 seconds with SSD.

To address this matter carefully,

Things such as random lag spikes and start up times are matters of perspective based - so it's hard to quantify a number to say yes this is an abnormal condition without being physically on your new laptop to verify it.

As for the service centre staff, I believe that they deal with such occurrences on a daily basis to know some numbers off hand based on their guidelines /SOP/ training. As forumers, we are not representatives of any company, so unfortunately, I will not be able to comment on whether if it's a number being plucked out from thin air or not. That's my 2 cents on this.

What we can do for you, is to help you reduce your boot time.

The random lag spikes can be due to Windows 10 telemetry which collects data, we can prove this or reduce this occurrence by disabling some settings and reducing background apps which are installed.

Being a new laptop, I am sure that there's probably quite a couple of things running being the scenes that are updating. Hence, this could possibly be reasons for the lag spikes that you are encountering as well.

No worries, will guide you step by step. :)

Disabling Telemetry (we can do this with a freeware, but let's do it manually)
Let's start by disabling stuffs on:
Settings --> Privacy

Read through and uncheck various options in this section, this will improve your privacy and imo reduce the amount of data being transmitted and collected*

For instance, under the general tab

Background Apps

Disable apps you do not need to run in your back ground as well..

Apps such as Xbox, Messaging, Maps, Cam, Paid wifi & Mobile, Tips, View 3D, 3D builder and more can be disabled

actually the main problem is that ur os is installed on ur 1TB HDD which is mostly 5400rpm. The SSD is just a cache to speed up ur boot speed but 5400rpm for OS is really slow.

there is nth wrong with ur laptop, if you want to increase ur boot up speed, can choose to change to a higher capacity ssd and clone over ur existing os from hdd.

Clt + Alt + Del
Head to start up and look for any which has a start up impact from medium to high.

Take a screen shot, upload it to imgur.com and post the link here

all along they have been using low capacity ssd as a cache. regardless is msata or m2 ssd.
as long as the ssd is below 64GB high chance its a cache.

even for asus business model, its common for them to use 500GB 5400rpm whereas for other brands, they use 500GB 7200rpm.

Dear Intrinion & Lethal,

Intrinion:

Thank u so much for the time!! Will do the disabling after work. Sorry, oh ya forgot to mention that it was bought last month but since then it is with asus center most of the time. On and off the background updates i think should have been done, i suspect something else weird on the background causing it

Lethal:
Thank u for helping out!
So the lag spikes could also be solved if i upgrade the ssd and install the os onto it?

No, it will not resolve the spike if you upgrade the SSD and ask them to load their bloatware OS.
Best is to install a clean Windows 10 OS which you can download from MS website.

Than install proper drivers for the notebook than the software.
In doubt can approach stores or forum member like myself that I can help.
Setting up Windows 10 is breeze I don't mind helping you to do
unlike other Windows this one is much faster.

Within few hours if you know how to do it right, the laptop should
be functionality as normal.
The 32GB SSD is not a HDD but rather cache, I suppose it is
running on Intel rapid start.

This needs some configuration before it can be useful.
If it does support Intel rapid start, by right it should be able to start
or resume within few seconds if configured properly.

Hope this helps, if you need help feel free to approach me .
Cheers.

Try disabling the antivirus software. Could be due to it running in the background

Best later you can try:

1) Download latest version of MS Windows 10 which includes creator update
(Thus you don't need to spend lots of time updating it)

https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10

2) After installed OS, next install notebook drivers (Note: Disconnect
the laptop from network thus you will have a much easier time to install
the driver.)

https://www.asus.com/Laptops/K401UQ/HelpDesk_Download/

3) Once driver is loaded, configure the rapid start inside the Intel IRT software.
This will configure the internal SSD to act as cache.

Once everything is done, your laptop should be silky smooth.
Try not to waste time disabling or removing an apps.
A clean format will settle everything, hope this helps.
Cheers. :)
