New rig for frequent video editing!

Hey guys! Would like to seek your advice on behalf of a friend, who is looking to overhaul his rig. I am quite out of the scene, last build was about 5 years ago.. hence my request!

His requirements are frequent video editing, using premiere pro, lightroom and photoshop mainly. Basically as long as it's able to support without any lag, together with a sufficient storage space.

Currently from his previous specs, he is only able to reuse his Samsung 120gb SSD I guess? So I guess he can get another internal 1-2TB hardrive for storage purposes.

Budget wise is about $1.5k - $2k, but if exceed a little it's fine too. Require a good airflow case as well, preferably no overclocking required!

AMD Ryzen 8-core/16-thread CPU like the 1700 for $499 or less.

At least 16GB of DDR4 RAM.

Amd is pretty good, but just like all the new platform when it's just out, tends to get some bug and lack optimization. But what amd ryzen 7 offer is really good and promising while priced very competitively.

Once these bugs are iron out and optimized, you can expect it run better than what it currently look like.

This is a lot more promising than the previous bulldozer series from amd lol

for Adobe related, at this point, the 7700K is better. However, for encoding, like with Handbrake after video editing, Ryzen really takes the cake

So this is a clear usage case for Ryzen. Take a 10% hit on Adobe related performance compared to a 7700K but get 5% better performance than a 6900K for half of the price.

Oh, and he might as well get the 1800X or 1700X in this case as every extra clock speed helps.

Oh, and don't forget, while lightroom etc are running, taking up 4 cores or something, he doesn't have to wait around and can continue working on something else like editing his video.

You don't want to sit around waiting for a task to complete. Ryzen's extra cores will allow him to do that as compared to the 7700K.

That may be true but ignoring hypothetical performance gains which may or may not occur in the future, Ryzen as it performs with these programs at this point is still the ideal processor for this usage scenario.

Would you be looking at the Socket 1155 (i7 7700K) or 2011 (6900K)? vs AM4 (Ryzen)?

Or all 3 solutions?
