Plus online is usually alot cheaper than the local brick and mortar outlets. The fact that SG alr sells electronics imported from the US with a steep markup alr makes things worse for local retailers who sell online(Lazada etc.), let alone brick and mortar retailers. Just wait, soon Best Denki and Harvey Norman will follow suit and shut their laptop/electronics sections when more and more Singaporeans start to wake up and smell the crappy smelly truth that many SG local retailers have been ripping them off for decades LOL.

Simple example is SSDs. Minus the local warranty, I can easily get a 512GB WD Black NVME m.2 SSD for 190 SGD. The same one sold on Lazada or local? 300 SGD. Fat hope getting it that cheap locally. Local retailers better wake up and smell the incoming crap before Amazon/Newegg bankrupts them lol.

The sole reason Aftershock can survive so long in this competitive scene(fingers crossed they can still survive for years to come) is because their pricing is so competitive even against online international retailers like Amazon and major brands. Other local retailers can either learn from AS to stop being so greedy and price their stuff properly or well, go bankrupt.

I don't think that's the main reason aftershock can survive. There is only one real reason.. everybody knows it.. The fact that they got the funds to start the business is questionable already

:s13:

The main reason can't survive is because of high rental.

Rental fees 5-6 digits a month, nobody can play nice in such circumstances.

It is the result of
- Low Wages > Staff Resignation
- Product Mark Up > Consumers Boycott
- Losing Money > Doomsday

This is very common in Singapore.. we all know the reason why.

I suggest all retail store to faster close down, don't get conned by the rental and use e-commerce instead!!

I do appreciate one thing Newstead did in late July, not so sure it was related to this new development or not, nevertheless thanks to their decision to refund the membership fee.

Some people still wondering why shops in sim lim can survive. Simple, they don't just do one business.

This ^^^

Not just retail shops, look at food court prices which are ridiculous for the generic stuff being offered.

Lol. Challenger cannot lah. They catering to the elderly crowd. I saw a grandma who brought in her laptop with WIFI problem at the Tiong Bahru branch. The one Challenger staff attending to her was patient and was explaining to her what went wrong.

Now there are three left Havey Norman , Best Denki & Challenger. I think Challenger will be next . Their product range getting lesser and lesser.

With the introduction of their value "Valore" brand, it is getting less attractive to shop in Challenger already.

My thought is Best Denki will go first.

Newstead is usually well known for students going to Poly and Uni as during their registration, there will be brochures and posters on their laptop deals and all.

I wouldn't call them deals per se but respectable for some.

But now with the advent of the online shopping platforms, their deals look like markups.

Then if the sales are mostly happening during year 1 registration periods, the rest of the year? pay staff but no sales because the price goes up to ridiculous status.
Then again, the next time Newstead's pricing looks palatable is during yet another Uni registration promotion. So rare to get good pricing. Might as well just boycott.

As for Sim Lim, take note, most shops there are using online platforms like Laz, Q10, Shp and even Carouhell. So their business is still strong on those other fronts.
