Hey guys,

I'm an international student working in SG. I have a quick question for you.

I've been planning to buy a tablet for a while now. I definitely dont want a 10" tablet as they are not so mobile and not light.

After a long research, I'm stuck between two models: New Nexus 7 and Samsung note 8.0.

On the paper, specifications are pretty much the same. Price is not a big issue for me, as I'll be using it all the time and I'd like to invest for once. I'd definitely go for the Note 8.0 but the resolution is lower than Nexus 7's full hd, so it makes me think twice.

I am a master student and I'll mainly use the tablet for web browsing, reading academic articles (maybe taking notes as well) and consuming media (tv shows and movies while commuting)

Which one would you recommend, and why? Also I'll leave the country at the end of this month, so where and for how much can i get the tablet? Can I get tax reduction at the airport? I'll be in Bangkok 20-24 sept, would it be cheaper there?

Regards,
Mete

Hi,

I suggest you drop by our store and do a physical comparison of the 2 units as we have both the units out for demo.

We are running promotion for both the shortlisted units and I'm sure it's better than getting the minimal rebate.

Cheers!

See ya around

If taking notes is important to you then there is no need for comparison, Nexus 7 cannot compare in this aspect with regards to Note 8.0 with it's S-Pen stylus.

Otherwise, you can get the Nexus 7 shipped directly from Amazon USA to Singapore. If you order now, should reach before you leave Singapore.

16GB: Amazon.com: Google Nexus 7 FHD Tablet (7-Inch, 16GB, Black) by ASUS (2013): Computers & Accessories
32GB: Amazon.com: Google Nexus 7 FHD Tablet (7-Inch, 32GB, Black) by ASUS (2013): Computers & Accessories ( currently out of stock )

Some sellers are clearing their stock it seems. I've seen BNIB Nexus 7 FHD tabs being sold for S$320. That's almost same same as the cost of ordering it from Amazon.

xonix, I'd like to test the nexus 7 before I set an order. I dont feel comfortable buying things online before I get my hands on them. So far I havent found a place in SG having nexus 7 on display. I'll check opensurface's place to evaluate them.

Actually I dont know if I'd make use of the S-pen much. I tried it and yes it works amazingly but it feels like an eye-candy to an extend.

If note 8 was full hd, I'd definitely go for it without thinking. Does the resolution really make a difference? Can it play full hd movies? I also consider the note 8.0 for the extra inch, I think its the ideal size.

I've seen some places selling in Chinatown note 8.0 as low as 399 with international warranty and I dont know how reliable they'd be. And for nexus 7, I dont have any options but buying it online right now. I'd like to buy from a brick-and-mortar store.

Last year's Nexus 7 demo unit, yes but I'm not so sure Nexus 7 FHD.

You mentioned note taking hence I highlighted this to help you make a decision.

Up to personal preference, some people are comfortable with 720p resolution whereas some have already moved on to 1080p. You can check out Note 8.0 in local stores to see if your comfort level.

AFAIK, Samsung do not provide intl warranty. 399 (wifi set) seems to be fairly low for Note 8.0, price quoted could be without 7% GST.

That's because Amazon now offers free shipping to SG. No need to go through forwarder, which makes the actual cost of the tablet to me USD 229 ~ $290 SGD.

BEWARE! $399 for Note 8 with warranty is WITHOUT A DOUBT (i.e. 100% just for emphasis!) a SCAM! Once u hand over the money, the shop will insist u have to sign some dodgy contract and pay more installments and they will refuse to return yr money. It was in the papers recently and I personally know someone who was cheated this way.

Funny thing is, i thought this only happens in Malaysia but apparently i was wrong and these scammers are getting braver each day.

Moral of the story is, if it's too good to be true then it isn't!

P.S.

As for yr other questions, IMO, a 7" tablet would be too small for yr purposes. The minimum shd be 8". Eventhough the resolution is lower, it will be easier to read and browse the web because the font will be sufficiently large. With the Nexus 7, eventhough the resolution is high, u will not be able to read comfortably if u try and fit everything into the screen. The high resol mainly helps for videos and photos/graphics. I speak from experience - i have several 7" tablets but i would never use them for serious reading or web browsing, just use them mainly for videos and some games.

And unless u r anti-Apple, u shd also try out the iPad Mini. I actually prefer the 4:3 format for reading books and for web browsing

Yup. I'm aware of that. US$229 is close to S$310. Paying $10 more for a stock that's available NOW rather than 2 weeks later might be acceptable to some. :)

Where did u see this $320? That is really a great price (unless its Chinatown!). From the marketplace is possible for any number of reasons but hard to understand why any retail shop would want to do it. After all, this is a new model so theres no reason to clear stocks. $10 profit per unit would hardly cover rent and labour

Oh, ok. Then its just some individual sellers who could have changed their minds or those who bought extra units. From retail shops, unlikely to get this kind of price

Thank you all for all the answers. I'm leaning towards note 8.0 finally.

Is it possible to play full hd movies with an app and without converting them to 720p? (MX player maybe?)

Nexus 7 has a button on display that shows the running apps. Is there such a shortcut for note 8? I find it quite useful for switching between apps.

Thanks,
Mete
