2 weeks better to move stay in the different Prefectures.

Fukuoka and nearby day trips might last you 5-7 days max before you need to travel further e.g Nagasaki which is worth a couple of days.

One of my day trip out of Fukuoka was to visit Akiyoshido Cave and Akiyoshidai Plateau in Yamaguchi prefecture :o

I did my Kyushu this trip in this manner.

If wasn't not due to wanting to visit Gunkanjima (in case of bad weather and cannot sail out on that day) and Mount Inasa (night view). I could just base myself the whole trip in Hakata (Fukuoka).

Day 01. Fukuoka
Day 02. Fukuoka > Miyazaki's Takachiho Gorge, Bus ride begin @ 08:03, reach @ 11:53, Bus return ride at 16:40, reach Hakata @ 20:29)
Day 03. Fukuoka > Saga > Fukuoka
Day 04. Fukuoka > Okayama > Fukuoka
Day 05. Fukuoka > Yamaguchi > Fukuoka
Day 06. Fukuoka > Hiroshima > Fukuoka
Day 07. Fukuoka > Oita's Yufuin > Fukuoka
Day 08. Fukuoka > Kagoshima's Sakurajima > Fukuoka
Day 09. Fukuoka > Nagasaki
Day 10. Nagasaki
Day 11. Nagasaki
Day 12. Nagasaki
Day 13. Nagasaki > Fukuoka
Day 14. Fukuoka

For travel between Hakata and Nagasaki by rail, I have to transfer at Takeo-Onsen?

Can I buy the tickets for the 2 legs together beforehand in Hakata?

Hi,

A change of train at Takeo-Onsen Eki is required as according to the map :

Do check out the transfer of train experience as shared by @zoossh :

Transfer at Takeo-Onsen station

You may purchase the entire trip journey (Hakata --> Nagasaki --> Hakata) with the intended date / time travel at Hakata station from the manned counters or ticketing machines if you're familiar with its usage.

Do refer to the instructions from the link :

https://www.jrkyushu.co.jp/english/train/relay_kamome.html

*If you are traveling to Nagasaki, please make a transit from Limited express to Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen at Takeo Onsen Station.

*If you transfer to the ""Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen KAMOME"" without exiting the ticket gate on the day of boarding, a single ticket will be issued. In this case, your reservations for the continual reserved seats (free) with the JR Kyushu Rail Pass will be counted together as one.

*""Relay KAMOME"" and ""Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen KAMOME"" are not covered by the JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking service. If you are a JR Kyushu Rail Pass holder and would like to reserve a seat, please contact us to inquire at the ticket counter in a JR station after your arrival in Japan. (If you would like a non-reserved seat, you can ride with the JR Kyushu Rail Pass alone.)

Anyway, usually the only really crowded places are Yufuin and Dazaifu, the top shopping spots and eateries in Fukuoka city, and the Yatai food stalls.

Hakata station staff are busy and if things havent change, they only allow you to redeem a day of transport on your JR pass. so u might not be able to get all your tickets on arrival to hakata unless nagasaki is your immediate next trip (mine is hakata to mojiko first).

i almost forget where i posted it. https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/threads/going-fukuoka-14days-in-march-any-advice.6987866/page-2
Yes

fukuoka to Nagasaki needs to change train at takeo onsen station. They will announce in english when near the takeo station

on google map it says 1 min walk and 5 mins gap to take the train. I was initially worried that 5 mins not enough to navigate the platform but in the end u just need to walk out of the train across the platform to the other train at the same level

if I rem correctly I boarded platform 3 at fukuoka and is due to board the other train at platform 11 at takeo onsen. Thankfully the first half of the train stop at platform 10 so I just need to cross in less than a minute.

also takeo is good for a stop over which you can do on the way there or back

and some snapshots of takeo city library if u decided to tour in between the two limbs.

not sure of the off season or of oct. but nagasaki doesnt feel as crowded as touristy places in fukuoka, and in my short trip, people in nagasaki are more friendly with some small chats done. i even took some photo of them and with them

I also heard recently some airports or stations the staff only allow same day reservation.

But from reviews it seems like if you get a nice staff they will book your full itinerary for you.

Previously I am manage to change rail passes and make complete reservations for all days[6/5] The last was JR east 2020, Kyushu 2016.

Can I check your experience in Hakata when they only allowed same day booking was in which year?

I need to change passes at Kansai airport in November this year and wanted to be prepared.

i heard recently can buy shinkansen tickets for JR pass users via the vending machines?

is that limited to shinkansen only or limited express also can?

heres the website for Shinkansen ones: https://japanrailpass.net/en/use/reserved-seat-reservation/
U mean u already exchanged for jr pass at jr stations and want to use the machines to book ticket yourself?

should be able to do so. Search youtube there should be guides but I didn’t tried myself. Wait for other more experienced forumers.

but I did buy Shinkansen directly from the machine in may. That is without jr pass. U may want to do your maths as jr pass now not very worthwhile

if u bought your JR pass from their official website, u could make online reservations & pickup ticket at green vending machine

if bought from others like klook, u could make reservations at green vending machine

for both u can also do via ticket office
