woh, hardcore sia. Half the Aussie coastline in one trip, for what I do in 4 trips..

Anyway it's def. doable within 40 days. Many couples we met campervaning drove across/or around Aussie in single 2 months trip, ultra slow pace.

And it seems they tend to take the inside track from kalgoorlie to Ayers rock then down south to Adelaide, instead of the coastal.
Perhaps Ayers/Uluru/Cooperpedy is like a must do.

Look forward to hear your plan. Just keep out to average 200km/day for mental health. Otherwise at night sleep also dream the straight empty road tapering to the horizon where sky meets bushy land.

Wait, it should be more than 8000km/40 days, btw, no kids? kids no need study?
After your trans-aussie trip, you can champion this thread for the rare breed. haha

no need drive, walking takes 34 days only. haha
VxPHZval.png

sidenote, you might wanna checkout their relocation offers, from the major renters direct, almost free/ $1/day rent with few hundred$ petrol thrown in. But likely into 2 legs, coordinated, most probably, the perth-Adelaide/Alice or Alice-Melbourne legs.

still havent found a rental company to rent the campervan.

still got no kids yet .. jsut got married last dec ... haha

personally i think i got no problem with the driving part, since i enjoy driving.
talking about the relocation part, it a good idea to save up some money, but most of the rental company i read about only like offer a couple of day for you to reach from destination to destination.
i find it abit rush, so didnt consider the offer

on a side note, have you drove up to snowy mountain before ?
driving in the snow ?
i read somewhere that we need to rent the snow chain as well

wonder a 4 berth can go up the mountain anot ... lol

if it's 2 couples, 2x 2-berth rcmded for privacy, task sharing and ****, not healthy for newly weds to refrain for 40 days. Unless you planning road orgy, II've got nothing to say.

I rmbred those long transfers quite ok, 7 days or so, unless terms have changed.

I've been inland to the Snowy mountain and Kosciuszko NP within, June pre-winter 2 years ago. Roads are constantly cleared/shoveled for safe driving, if severe they would be closed, but seldom.

Most facilities/businesses are closed in that region before winter. Very little chance for you to go off-road anyway. Even if do, smaller vans will thus be more maneuverable in such tight road conditions.

40 days, you might wanna try out buy/sell option with a nationwide reseller chain, and with better equipped/luxury campervans .

No truck, other than an American RV Bus, will be big and comfortable as home. Soak in the breeze with canopy, camping chairs and table outdoor ba.

By the way, when's your planned trip?

I dunno what places you've been.
But assuming revisiting as new or covering the usual must-sees in the smoothest route, this is my 2 cts input.
EHiLXxAl.png

Perth-(Pinnacles/Waverock-detour)-Dunberry-Basselton-Margaret River-Denmark-Pembleton-Albany & The Rugged Coast (Gap/Blowhole)-Frizgerald NP-Esperance-CapeLeGrande NP-Kalgoolie-Outback Desert-Uluru NP (Redrock)-Alice Springs-Cooper Pedy-Adelaide-Grampians-Great Ocean Route-Melbourne-Yarra-Phillip island-Sydney-Newcastle-Waterfall Highway-DorigoNP-Gold coast-Brisbane-Sunshine Coast.

The big inland detour is only for the sake of the Red Rock, Cooper-pedy and taking the monotony away from the waves/beaches, for the real outback desert experience. Skipping and going coastal eastwards, shaves u 5-7 days more for East Coast cities

Where have you already been?
If you already done Perth/Albany, then maybe take the north route to Broome, Darwin then south to Alice.(but that's a greater hell of a drive)

Add another 10 days for Tasmania?..lol

hi,
have read your post about your trip and hope to have some advice from you for my first trip with my young children.
I read that for renting, we can underdeclared out number of pax? for my children under 50kg? as my children are 6, 5 and 3, how do we declare to them when we make booking?
total number of pax travelling will be 6, me, wife, kids and helper.
also base on our profile, do you think it will be feasible for us on this campervan holiday or we are better off just staying farm stay or hotel? we are looking to experience campervan experience of a lifetime just that I am wondering if it is safe for us taking into consideration of my young children, can you advice?
and which route will you recommend? base on 10-12 days? I am looking at after cny.
or will nz be more suitable?
thanks for reading and hope to receive your advice.
those who have experienced also please kindly chip in.
cheers

how did it go? care to share?
and shawn4881?

Quote from a returning friend from outback:
:After gazing the night skies, I felt very cheated by my whole childhood and fables of singular stars"

Only cold you can get in the South Hemisphere, other than S. America, S. Africa, guess Australia again.

Sydney-Goldcoast-Brisbane and back, here we come yet again..with a buddy camper family, end nay-mid June.

Camper rates seems to be up 20%

Just read through the entire thread, very informative and thanks for sharing! 2 friends and I (all guys) are planning a campervan trip for Melbourne- Sydney, currently have 8-9 days to drive excluding the time for the cities. It will be in mid-late May. I have a few questions hope the pros here can help to clarify:

1. I suppose a Hitop 2-3berth will be sufficient for our needs. Ensuite toilet should be not necessary since its winter and do not really need to bath as often. Can we pee in the wild lol. With regard to booking, I understand the major renters are Jucy, Britz etc. But to get the better deals, which are the recommended agents' websites to browse through to look for deals? Where can I find relocation deals also, since we're quite close to the actual date now.

2. We are experienced drivers, driving in SG and for myself several overseas, is zero excess is necessary as we are also afraid of any adverse events happening

3. Parking fines, so can I check what are the areas that are not illegal to park with the campervan, other than camp sites, holiday parks. Also, I read that Wikicamps is a good app for all these camp sites info?

4. Is the coastal route a better route or should we go through Victoria/ACT? We intend to go the GOR which is out of the way. Do we have time for Grampians?

5. Will it be excrutiatingly cold at the night sleeping in camper vans? Is sleeping with many layers of clothing required?

Will try to update in this thread also when our route firms up

Likely you din read thoroghly enough..haha, most points covered..

Pee in wild corners. Dig hole and cover poo for consideration. Nonetheless do you business or park near public toilets. Most sites have.

Many agents (ever-growing/new ones) charges less than direct. USe competing non-affiliated agents quotes to price match with direct Sydney/melbourne are popular sites, won;t have relocation offers, unlike Darwin, Cairns, Hobart.

2. We are experienced drivers, driving in SG and for myself several overseas, is zero excess is necessary as we are also afraid of any adverse events happening
Your call, but for almost double price for 5% touchwood chance of zero liability claim, I feel not worth. Your travel insurance covers $300-500. For bodyworks/screens, car workshops can handle the standard campers.

3. Parking fines, so can I check what are the areas that are not illegal to park with the campervan, other than camp sites, holiday parks. Also, I read that Wikicamps is a good app for all these camp sites info?

Everywhere free, except posted parking signs/gantries typically in cities.
Some campsites have donation boxes, own time, own money carry on.
Wikicamps AU is free and accurate. But usually direct you to official ulu/darkspots, there are still beach parks, town play parks (with toilets: poo/pee/washing/rinsing) to park overnight at. May/Jun lull period, rangers/patrols wont bother.

4. Is the coastal route a better route or should we go through Victoria/ACT? We intend to go the GOR which is out of the way. Do we have time for Grampians?
Coastal route if going one-way.
8-9 days exc. cities is fine for GOC and Grampians. If 2-way, Syd-Mel (2 days), Mel-GOC-Grampians-Mel (4 days), Mel-Syd (2 days), quote relaxed pace

5. Will it be excrutiatingly cold at the night sleeping in camper vans? Is sleeping with many layers of clothing required?

Coastal not cold, + mid-May is not peak cold, min. 10C.
Supplied sheets/comforter are sufficient, use car heater.
Line sleeping panel sides with pkg cardboard to insulate.
Me and kid sleep with undies/thin tee only, blanketed.

* Remember, extra sheets/linens/camp chairs/tables cheaply available at K-mart, $5-10 each. Cheaper than renting from depot ($25 each hire).
Giveaway to fellow campers on your last night, Not worth the $40 20kg luggage to carry back either if on budget flight. OR like a camper suggested, give for free on gumtree, in exchange for a free ride from return depot to airport. (cabfare ranges from $20-100)

Thanks for the quick and useful reply! Regarding the car heater, does this mean we need to stay in a powered caravan park for it to operate? Or can we just have a day's drive of charging and leave the heater to run overnight, charging again the next day drive?

I suppose also the camping equipment you mentioned we have to buy from some discount store if we manage to find some.

allow me to contribute.

Use front heater with engine turned on, else will deplete the front battery and can't start van in the morning. It also consume about 1/4 tank petrol running 6 hours non-stop.
Thus it's also best to get newer vans, so that less/no vibration for sleep when engine's on.

Crockery already supplied, no other camping gear except extra beddings/outdoor chairs/table. Eat in only if raining/drizzle, so can leave lower bed down all the time, no need lechay convert every night.

Well said, buz.
A thing to note, most cig sockets work only with car key inserted/turned on. Lock from inside for security.

For charging devices when away, either dup a key or wire a 12v splitter to the back battery (hidden under driver side dining chair), so that it's always on. Latter preferred,, so that you can sleep with your devices beside. Long usb cables doesn't charge or slowly

For my coming trip,,I realised I can stick a $3 5m led strip along the canopy edge, and light up externally for dining out (outside the vans, I mean). The single bulb external lamp not comfortably bright enough.

And with accompanying family, will be bringing a led projector and white cloth(screen) for night movies for the 5pm darkout. Again you can't do this at paid shared sites, especially more with noisy kids in company.

oh so if we leave the front engine on, the battery will not die off in the morning? (i suppose it consumes petrol instead?) Within the van there is there any normal powerplug sockets?

yeah the long night hours is gonna need some activities. We intend to cook nice dinners and bring some board games over as well. Projector sounds like a good idea just that its kind of bulky, and perhaps need bring speakers and labtop too.

Anyway which telco will be most reliable when travelling melb-sydney route?
