@phelyk - hi, will be doing MSc Strategic Studies too, so hope to see you when term starts (or during registration on 6 Jul). FYI, I got my letter a while back, but judging from what I have read here (20 back pages of this forum thread haha), the letter might be stuck in the system. But do go in to accept your placement (by today, actually!). The link is floating somewhere (innocast has been pretty helpful with the link)

@mzo.siberia - hi, hope to see you too. I am a little amused, since most ppl are flying IN to South Africa for the World Cup, and you are going in the OPPOSITE direction (lol).

@snoozex - thanks for sharing with us (was searching for someone who has done RSIS programmes actually). Do you mind sharing a little more about how life is like during your studies at RSIS? Hectic scheduling, term papers, group work etc? Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Overall, my stay there was a pleasant one (at IDSS then). As a full time student, you will typically do 2 modules per trimester. Even with two subjects, I was struggling to complete all the readings. Perhaps this was due to my prior background (my academic background was in accounting and engineering).

The system has changed a bit as there used to be two core modules for each program (now reduce to one). No restriction on elective i.e. you can choose anything to make up yr degree from the offered list (provided they are offering). Each subject will typically be 3 hrs/wk, usually seminar style.

Group work is rare and typically you will be submitting a 5k term paper which is worth 40-50% of the total mark. I have only 1 groupwork (in the form of analytical case study report) for an IPE elective. I think the MBA electives might require groupwork though.

One interesting part of the program was the the composition of the class. My IPE cohort was small, only 20 students. Foreign students made up more than 50%, many of them on governmental scholarship (usually from Singapore). So you will get to network with people from the ministries (both local and foreign) e.g. my cohort included a SAF colonel, a Nigerian diplomat, a China Foreign Affairs officer....

Haha - good to know there's one more fella in hwz taking up Strategic Studies =) What info does the acceptance letter package contain? I didnt know about the registration on 6 jul thing. I am still working and need to plan out my leave in july to cover my studies....

Hi,

RSIS operates on a trimester basis. During my time,

1st Sem - 2 subjects
2nd sem - 2 subjects
3rd sem - 2 subjects

there is one more subject known as professional skill enhancement, basically it is a series of workshops, seminars and professional talks.

So total 7 pluys dissertation.

You may think it is very little but I feel that RSIS is more hectic than WKWSCI.

I see. So now they also offer coursework route. Graduation criteria did not change as I did 6 subjects plus 1 professional skill enhancment and 1 dissertation. Previously, we all have to submit a dissertation. I think the issue then would be the supervisor as they assigned supervisor to student. I know some of my friends have appealed to have their supervisors changed. One case got pretty ugly.....

It is possible to do three subjects per trimester but I would think opting for the dissertation would be a better choice. 10k words is not alot, more like an extended term paper. Since they have a B+ requirement, you would have to be careful with the electives. So if you want to do dissertation, so maybe you go for core subject plus one elective (2 subjects) in the first trimester to achieve a high GPA.

Hey hey people... how is going... I am singapore... really cool place... went around to NTU yesterday and saw the lady at RSIS.... the place is really cool guys, the library in the vicinity is small but very cool and the books are so flippin new... good stuff.... Hey, can I ask you guys a question yeah... have you accepted the offer and paid the S$500.00... I already accepted the offer, and I have to pay soon, I will pay cash at the RSIS office... they said that I will not receive a receipt of payment until the time of graduation when I pay the miscellaneous fees and all that....

I cant wait to be part of the NTU-RSIS educational experience..... I really liked what I saw hey....

Hi,

For part time students, the school will do the registration for you. For full time student, you can register once the term starts (the first two weeks are for you to try out the electives or what is known as "add-drop" period). For the coming semester, the schedule is already out and you can check from NTU website.
