NTU PartTime (Need Advice)

Does anyone has knowledge of NTU parttime degree for Engineering?.


I am intending to study parttime degree at NTU. How do you cope with the time management and balance of study and works. Do you need to sacrifice your result for works..?


If in case I have decided to take parttime and foreseen that I cant cope is it possible to convert to Fulltime, or take more subjects to completes the whole course while still staying in Parttime. It means i quit my Fulltime job.

Do you have the determination to complete study in the first place? 5 years of half-work half-study is tough. As you can see, not many, or even rarely people produce advise here related to part-time studies. For me, I've thought it over for a long time before accepting this part time studies in NTU.

If you're not mentally prepared, then I'd suggest you seek elsewhere such as PSB. PSB provide a shorter engineering degree though many said that it is hard to pass. Engineering is hard to pass in the first place.

Lastly, there's TOO MANY COMPANIES who discriminate part-timers, claiming them unable to work overtime, not efficient mixing studies and work together, ending up either trying to sack you, or do not want to hire you. If you wanna quit, think twice.

Try NUS part-time. Its about 3.5year to 4. Or SIM lah!!!! More faster. Anyway...a degree is just a degree.

yup....thats the reasons I ve asked the advice of people who are part time. I realized the toughness of balancing and it is 5 years...what I mean if halfway I decided to focus on my parttime and quit my job do u think the NTU allowed to let me take more subject in order to complete the course

y u wan to quit your job and study part time? that makes no sense. y dont u study full time instead? NTU only allows u to overload with 1 module every sem for part time. usually 1 sem u get 3 modules and 1 lab, so after overload u, u have 4 modules and 1 lab.

I am current taking part time EEE and overloading with 4 modules and 1 lab, basicially i go to school everyday. Its tuff but I'm use to it. basically i Have no life as I work and go to sch in weekdays and study in wkends. I seldom hang out during school term.

yups thx for ur sharing....I noe its tough....i think i made myself not clear slasher83. I mean if let say i am taking parttime and in the half way...I am thinking I cant cope...I am thinking to sacrifice my FT job and focus on the studies..and thinking if it takes 5 years to study parttime isnt that too long..My quiries is if Possible to slot in m ore modules so I can graduate faster...What is the duration if In that case?. Hope it clearer

1. nothing is easy. Else everyone will have it. Full time students do not have it easy too b/c there's lots of extra stuff to study + intensive competition

2. Part time is hard, but you only study the impt/relevant stuff. Might actually be more enjoyable/easier in term of pure workload. Everyone else work too, so the competition is somewhat lesser

3. And have you believe it or not, where i work, a technician actually manage to complete her degree full time while still working. Ha, somehow she manage to change all her shifts around to suit her time table.
Just for that alone, i take my hat's off her.

4. I'm thinking of dabbling in some part time research though. Not wanting to plug head first into a 4 year phd so want to try try first. Is it easy to write in to some profs to ask for a part-time internship? Anyone tried before?

1. The part-time NTU degree is different from NUS BTech. The PT students are taking the same exams as the full time students. I dont think they have a seprate grading system for FT and PT students for the same exam. u are correct, part time in NTU take the same exam as full time, and are graded together with full time students, so the degree is the same

my method of studying is overkill actually, to ensure that I get the best result. it is really not that hard, that is if u dont aim as high as me. But for most ppl its a "culture shock" when they first enter NTU, for part time EEE 50%-60% of the 1st year part time students drop out.

If u do well in your result u can convert to full time, then U have much more time to study. From what I heard, there are quite a number of ppl who quit their job in the final year of the part time study. If u overload 6 sems u can complete in 4years which i think is the minimum period u can complete the part time degree, if your diploma result is good and u have good working experience u can apply for exemption for some modules. but i suggest u not to apply for exemption as it is way harder than what u have learnt in poly, and it is important to learn those fundamental modules to score well later on.

for exam i just take a day leave before the exam and half a day to a day on the exam itself to rest. since I already studied during wkends., during exams its more important to rest well imo. so far it works very well for me

Interesting, which year are you now?

I'm in the 2nd year, doesn't seems to be able to overload school work now (timing problem wise... strangely).

its very possible...but if u work pt and study at the sametime...going to be challanging.....
