Hey guys, I'm new to biking, so would like to seek your expertise.

After lurking in this thread for a pretty long time, I would say I am very inspired to use biking as my main source of transport. (Serangoon to NTU does sound far though.)
So, I am interested in getting a bike for daily commuting, and if possible, XC in the future.

If I'm on a budget, (say, is 200-300 a safe range?), what should I get that is good for street (leisurely) biking? And also, is it advisable to get a 2nd-hand bike from some biking enthusiats?

$500-600 would be a better budget since you can get brand new 2006 or 2007 bikes that're sold at close-out prices. My friend just entered the hobby with this bike:

Not bad, light frame and highly upgradeable. Comes with disc brakes and 27 speed Deore shifters and rear derailleur.

As for 2nd hand bikes, get someone experienced to go with you so that he/she can check the bike for abuse. Or bring the 2nd hand bike to a bicycle shop and politely ask if they can help you check for cracks or a warped frame etc.

Shops ah.. Tay Cycle/Junction carries Giant and GT as they're the distributor. Hup Leong carries Jamis. Maybe others can also recommend other bikes and shops to get them from.

You can try looking at these:

Giant Yukon/Boulder
GT Avalanche
Jamis Dakota 1.0 or 2.0

Get the most bang for buck bike you can for your money, most important is a good frame that'll encourage upgrades. If the initial parts are lousy, not much of a prob as you'll probably change and upgrade them along the way.

Nothing that is out of this world or top of the line. Mid budget upgrades that would hopefully serve me well. Currently cycling to work (20km each way) 4-5 times a week.

You wont go wrong with ur choice.

Cycling is the way to go now. Keep fit, save the earth and start shedding those extra pounds!

I started cycling to work bout 2 months back and i have never look back since. I am so hooked to cycling now. I cycle everywhere until my friends think i am crazy.

Distance is all in the mind. Before you know it you will reach ur destination already.

I am staying at Serangoon North, Ave 4.

Well, I was checking out the market forums in togoparts.com. But I am not very certain on what to look out for in purchasing 2nd hand bikes. And you guys are all the people I know who are experts in this field.

So, yup, gonna play safe and go the "brand-new" route.

Wah! For that price I suggest you aim for a earlier year (2006 or 2007 or maybe even earlier) bike model by one of the brands suggested. Call up a few shops to ask if they've any on clearance then go down and take a look.

Also, what's your height? It'll play a part in bike sizing.

You're probably looking at a Medium (or 17") frame size bike then.. do test out the bike to confirm before buying.
