If the phone hardware, OS, apps and software are good, why wouldn't they charge $1288 for it?
Android phone vendors have more to worry about the rise of Xiaomi who sell their hardware at cost price and then earn through apps and services. It remains to be seen whether high end android smartphones are able to command such a premium when it's proven that hardware cost is low (xiaomi has showed it) while loading free third party OS and apps?
Having their own OS and ecosystem will determine their own destiny and technology route map and vision. Apple knows this since 1980s, microsoft knows this and now samsung is starting to know this by going into Tizen.
Apple is slowly shifting production back to homeland. You can't beat piracy with fake ones coming out before the real McCoy. All you need to someone from the inside be it the engineer or the designer as IT professionals turn over will definitely hurt Apple closely guarded secret. Just like almost half of Xiaomi VPs are ex-google. With that out of the equation hopefully Apple will have a more "exclusive" and premium model to command top dollar. Then again the real test will come during ip7 when Steve future vision and ideas run out and the product comes solely from the present Apple team.
