Indeed if one don't mind lock 10yr then SSB is an option. But SSB is a compounding interest

SSB is a 10-yr maturity bond. But you can withdraw anytime you wanted. non-compounding Interest are distributed and deposited back to your bank acct. twice per year (once every 6-mths) based on the interest rate of that year mentioned.

How about last year? Hmm.. might be a good spot to persuade them how much your return in TOTO/4D vs Bonds or ETF :s12:

good meh ?

if u hold for 5 years, the average return per year is 1.87%

the earlier UOB product you showed was 2.4% guaranteed per year if you hold up to 5 years + variable, guaranteed already 0.5 % more

UOB Structured deposit is principal guaranteed only if held until the maturity date. There is a "potential loss of the principal sum invested if the investment is not held to maturity."

For SSB, you can withdraw anytime and capital is guaranteed. The interest you will get is based on the number of years you hold the SSB.

I dont think my mum has won big since the start of the year

she has already spent $62 on TOTO without calculating 4D because I cant find the ticket :s13:

I should tell her to give that sum of money to me as allowance :s13:

Which is why I rather dump my Emergency fund there, instead of hard earn war-chest inside. There's no way you can risk your EF into equities or share. Bank FD and Savings interest is still lower than what SSB can offer in 10-yr period.

You are correct if you are talking in context to Singapore.

In context to arbitrage, foreign bank fixed deposits (non SGD) can beat SSB any time because the inflation and interest rate in certain countries are higher than Singapore. Hence those countries offer higher interest rates for fixed deposits as well.

One down side to this game play is currency exchange risk. Money flow is another topic if you know how to get pass it. :s13:

I understand what you meant. Previously I have plans to create AUD Acc. acct. Did some calculations and projections. End up the forex is really a huge portion of risk im taking. In conclusion, dropped this plan. lol.

AUD/SGD lowest to highest rate for the past 10 years is 0.9352 - 1.3827. The low of 0.9352 was during the 2008 great financial crisis. Unless Australia underwent a major terrorist attack or crisis I do not think it can go even lower than that. :D

When AUD/SGD hits parity or lower than 1.00 it is fire sale to stock up on AUD. Will not go wrong de. :s13:

This is an example of Australian bank fixed deposit rates.

If you dare to put money in China like me also good rates. The most dangerous place is the safest place. :D

Won't be able to convince them this way lah
They buy toto is for thrill of checking number Everyday, deciding what number to buy , and instant return , touching the betting slip, comparing with their friends, moaning about losses

Not to slowly increase their money
