Equities performed within expectations in 2016. Will it be the same in 2017?

SINGAPORE (Feb 1): Bank of Singapore had been successful in predicting the trends in the equity markets in 2016, but concedes that the uncertainties from Donald Trump’s administration has made the job of making accurate market predictions far more difficult in 2017 than in past years.

According to BoS’ investment strategist James Cheo, a good scenario would be where Trump’s fiscal thrust and deregulation added to the US’ current financial situation. On the other hand, a negative scenario would occur if Trump’s fiscal policies led to inflation outpacing growth.

Cheo admits that either of these scenarios would have a lower probability of occurring. What’s most likely to happen is the position between both scenarios, with moderate fiscal policy and some deregulation, which still leaves plenty of uncertainty in equity returns.

As such, Cheo remains “underweight” on equities, given that equity markets are currently trading at their historical highs.

“In order for markets to go higher, earnings have to improve significantly. A closer look at earnings shows that analysts’ estimates of earnings are very optimistic at 10 to15% for 2017. However, actual earnings for 2016 were muted at 2 to 3% for most markets and negative for Europe and Japan,” says Cheo, forecasting single digit earnings growth for 2017.

While equity returns are likely to be similar to 10 year bond yields, US equities could perform much better at 7% to 8% given Trump’s pro US slant. Europe’s equity returns would be much lower at 3% to 4% from increased political risk and Japan’s would be around 5% to 6%.

Asia’s equity returns could be about 7% and potentially enter into a bull market, says Cheo, though he cautions that the downside for the region could be large if a trade war emerged between US and China.

Viz Branz to seek S$700mil value in Singapore listing

SINGAPORE: Viz Branz Pte, a coffee and cereal beverage maker, is seeking to relist on the Singapore stock exchange with a valuation of at least S$700mil (US$494mil), according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The Singapore-based company, which sells products under “Gold Roast” and “Cafe 21” brands, is aiming to price the stock offering this year, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the process is private. Proceeds would be used to fund expansion, according to one of the people.

Viz Branz is seeking a valuation that is more than double the S$289mil value when the company was delisted from the Singapore bourse in 2013, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

The planned listing would come after Jacobs Douwe Egberts BV agreed in November to buy Singaporean coffee maker Super Group Ltd in a deal valuing the target at 32.6 times trailing 12-month earnings, the data show.

Viz Branz has expanded in China and Myanmar and boosted its profit margins since it was taken private, one of the people said. Its net income decreased 13% to S$25.9mil for the year ended June 30, according to a Singapore corporate filing.

Viz Branz has distribution networks in the US, Lebanon, Russia, South Korea and Bangladesh, according to a subsidiary’s website.

Soh Puay Khong, chief operating officer at Viz Branz, didn’t immediately respond to e-mails seeking comment.

First-time share sales in Singapore climbed more than four-fold last year to US$1.7bil, Bloomberg-compiled data show.

Malaysian restaurant chain PappaRich Malaysia Sdn Bhd is also preparing an IPO in the city-state as soon as this year to fund expansion, people with knowledge of the matter said earlier this month. – Bloomberg

Johnny Depp almost ruined by lavish spending: Lawsuit. Spends USD$2mil a month for the last 20 yrs.
LOS ANGELES: Johnny Depp's lavish spending - including US$3 million to blast author Hunter S. Thompson's ashes from a cannon - led him to the brink of financial ruin, according to an explosive lawsuit filed Tuesday.

Over the best part of two decades, the 53-year-old actor has been spending US$2 million a month, according to The Management Group (TMG), which is suing the star in Los Angeles for an unpaid loan.

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor is alleged to have forked out US$75 million on 14 homes, including a 45-acre (18-hectare) French castle, a chain of Bahaman islands, several Hollywood homes, penthouse lofts in downtown LA and a horse farm in Kentucky.

Since 2000, the Oscar-nominated actor has spent US$18 million on a yacht, bought 45 luxury cars and shelled out almost US$700,000 a month on wine, private planes and a staff of 40 people, according to the lawsuit.

Beverly Hills-based TMG says Depp has accrued more than 200 artworks by Warhol, Klimt and other masters, 70 collectible guitars and a Hollywood memorabilia collection so extensive it is stored in 12 locations.

Depp filed his own US$25 million suit on January 13 accusing TMG of mismanaging his finances, taking out loans without his approval, and concealing his ruinous finances.

"Over 17 years, The Management Group did everything possible to protect the actor from himself," TMG attorney Michael Kump said in a statement.

"In fact, when Depp's bank demanded repayment of a multimillion-dollar loan and Depp didn't have the money, the company loaned it to him so that he would avoid a humiliating financial crisis."

TMG says it repeatedly warned Depp over his "wanton" overspending, but he responded by rebuking his business managers, increasing his spending and demanding they find some way to pay for it.

The firm, fired by Depp last year, says it is owed US$4.2 million and was forced to launch foreclosure proceedings on Depp's property.

"The only reason Depp filed this lawsuit was to interfere with TMG's ongoing efforts to be repaid on the loan they had made to bail him out," TMG said.

Depp and actress Amber Heard, 30, reached an out-of-court settlement in August to end their 18-month marriage, agreeing that he would pay her US$7 million.
