Well, 7 weeks have past since this post:

Last week I called 1609 again, this time to order just the World Cup and pay $112.35. Did not want to re-contract 24-months and be stuck with set top box rental. Currently my existing plan come with the HD DVR set top box free rental until Oct, so instead of being tied by the 24-months contract and set top box rental, I want the flexibility to decide in October. I figure if I can re-contract for the next two Oct (it is during the window of one of the show/expo) with free HD DVR, the total cost to me is still cheaper if I just pay for the World Cup now (HD DVR rental is $9.90/mth after a $3 discount for 24 months = $237.60. If no discount is $12.90/month for 24 months = $309.60). If I cannot get a re-contract in Oct with free HD DVR, then I just cancel my Gold Pack. Go back to free Internet streaming, even though very troublesome to find good quality stream consistently, irritating, and low quality stuttering video.
To my surprise this time around, the guy at 1609 after asking me why don't re-contract 24-months and after listening to my explanation said he will check what he can do. Subsequently retention spoke to me and after verifying and listening to me, offered a 24-months re-contract of my existing Gold Pack subscription complete with the free HD DVR rental for the new entire 24-months and free World Cup 2014. This time it is really "everything the same" and I do mean "everything".
SingTel, this is the way to generate customer goodwill. This is a totally different experience compared to 7 weeks ago. Come to think of it, if you offer free rental of HD DVR set-top box to Gold Pack customers and revert to free rental of normal set-top box to Family+ customers, this is one way you can increase your customer base and also not loose your existing customers.
My biggest peeve with Pay-TV is set-top box rental. I hate this piece meal pricing tactics that throw a smoke screen trying to make subscriptions look cheap. Everything should be priced as a total package. If package pricing is reasonable to I take, if not then I leave it.
If I have to pay rental for bus train or taxi in addition to the fare, I won't be their customers. Similarly rental of utensils in the food establishment, rental of seats in cinema, rental of equipment in the barber, etc, etc. Luckily this never catch on.
By the way, World Cup channels on mioTV are 141 and 142. Since yesterday, 141 has started broadcasting past world cup and preview. I think mio Sport 133 also have these contents on demand, if I am not wrong. Did not have the time to check and compare.
Now, to enjoy the World Cup and family bonding time.
