PM Wong says the collective will of Singapore’s people matters even more than the country’s progress, good plans and strategies.

Pioneers embodied this spirit, he says, highlighting Project Citizens – an effort to capture stories of the first Singaporeans who received their pink
laminated NRICs in 1966.

Among them is Madam Florence Yuen Siew Mei, who lived through the racial riots. She and her neighbours supported one another by sharing food during curfews.

The eldest of 13 children, she had to support her family from a young age while attending night school. Now at 85, she continues to volunteer in her community.

PM Wong says he salutes Madam Yuen and all pioneers, adding that these stories show their grit and quiet strength.

He notes that even though the pioneers went through immense hardship, they looked out not just for themselves, but also for one another.
