Remember one very simple fact: 4K resolution is 4x that of 1080 (2x the pixels in width, 2x in height). The GPU speed, CPU speed, RAM speed have not improved 4x (console or PC). And the improvement in speed is also used in new features like light tracing. So there is really no way of reaching real 4K significantly (unless the graphics is more simplistic).

Also consider that for 4K, you really need higher resolution texture, more detailed 3D modelling... it all means more time, more manpower, more resources needed, but game prices have not increased (directly anyway, of cos developers/publishers are using other tricks to increase the price, like DLCs etc.). For 4K, prices will have to go up a lot (it's rumored that next gen will go from US$60 to US$70) to have actual highly visible graphics improvements.

Also note that higher resolution texture, more detailed 3D modelling etc. will mean that more processing power (GPU, CPU) and RAM (size and speed) are needed. Again, there isn't 4x improvement in all that. So tricks will always be necessary, like checkerboarding, dynamic resolution, etc. And alternatives like going for art styles that are easier to render, that will still look very good without needing to aim for photorealism.

And that's not even considering that people expect higher fps (at least 60, stable). So 'fake' 4K will be here for a long time. No point thinking too much about that, just enjoy better and better graphics (hopefully game prices don't go up too much).

It's not all about resolution. You can run Tetris or Minecraft at 4K too, no tricks needed. But if you want the same details of a 1080p high-budget game with tons of graphics goodness, and try and do 4x of that, that's not truly achievable.

Sure, pick one of those high-budget 1080p games and just render it as-is at 4K, you can do that too, no tricks needed. But it's still the same 1080p models, it's not 4x the details when rendering in 4K. It can look better, cos the resolution is higher, like if you have a simple 3D model of a sphere, rendering the same 3D model at 4K resolution it will look better (less jaggies). This is basically like all those PS2 games looking better on PS4, even without remastering. Or all those PS2/PS3 remastered games on PS4, they are not really adding 1080p or 4K details, so sure you can still run them at 4K resolution.

What I am saying is, at 1080p you can get super beautiful graphics on the current gen, but at 4K you can't get graphics that is 4x as beautiful.

i do have a sneaky feeling Microsoft is going to brute force their games to 4K (using horsepower/tflop) while Sony will include a newer version of their checkerboard rendering hardware found in PS4 Pro. (so-called faked 4K)

4k is extremely overrated, I'll take 1440p/144hz or even 1080p/144hz over 4k/60 any day, high frame rates don't only reduce input lag and make gameplay more enjoyable, they can also greatly impact visuals by reducing ghosting.

4k is just a stupid marketing gimmick, I think the industry was trying to sell more 4k TVs and monitors, so they had to keep pushing this higher resolution nonsense.

30fps is just a joke, this is the primary reason why I gave up on consoles many years ago.

Dynamic 4k is fake 4k ?

weak siah can't run Avengers native 4k 60 fps on PS5.

where are all the dragon and phoenix ?

"fake 4k" AKA reconstructed image is the future sir. look towards DLSS

altho i doubt next gen consoles have such technology :s13: but i do heard MS and Sony have their own implementation of it so we shall see

i also agree with some other users here saying native 4k is overrated. if u play on a 55inch - 65inch tv u won't notice a difference between 1440p and 4k most of the time unless you sit damn close to the TV.

i hope devs priortize 1440p and 60fps on ps5/xbx or at the very least, offer it as on option.

4k is just an easy buzzword used as marketing to sell to the casuals

my friend said he will go back to pc master race.. he said sony false advertising.. cannot fulfill native 4k 60 fps for all games..

more options will be always be good.

I think the best PC in the world also cannot guarantee that. :s13::s13::s13::s13:

i'm just greedy.. want 4k want 60 fps want all the bells and whistles, extremely good render/details.

end of the day, if have to choose, i choose 60-120 fps (doubt 120 fps is possible in console) and "respectable" resolution which is 1440p.

already been doing that on PC liao.

the next evolution is 4k which still hasn't become mainstream. another 5 years to 10 years ?

if the current king of graphics card rtx 2080 TI can't even guarantee that then i don't think it's fair to expect consoles to achieve that with a much, much cheaper price point.

maybe the next king of graphics card rtx 3080 TI can guarantee that but i'm not sure either.

btw, games like dirt 5 is already confirmed to have 120FPS mode on consoles
