Sony switches X button to confirm for PlayStation 5 worldwide, gamers in Japan freak out

https://soranews24.com/2020/10/05/s...tation-5-worldwide-gamers-in-japan-freak-out/

"..this switch isn’t just for the PS5’s system menus, as Sony is asking Japanese game developers to make X the in-game confirm button as well.

So why the change? One reason is to cut down on confusion, Sony says. The “Circle is confirm in Japan but X is confirm in the West” pattern isn’t just for in-game choices, but for PlayStation home screen and system setting menus as well. Sony says this can cause problems if a Japanese user is playing a foreign-made game where X is confirm, then goes back to the system home screen where that button’s function suddenly switches to cancel. The company also feels that a worldwide standard will make things easier for game developers who’re releasing their games in multiple markets."

Was browsing Carousell and decided to take a look at PS5 prices.

Recent listings show a standard edition PS5 + controller going for $1,300. That's approx. 57% above RRP, which is about the value of 4.8 new first-party-studio games.

For digital edition PS5, there's a listing going for $1,100. That's approx. 84% above RRP, and about the value of 5.1 new first-party-studio games.

Some more thoughts: I understand that broadly speaking, in the business world, 10% profit margins are considered 'good'. Given that overheads for re-selling consoles are on the low end (perhaps transport fees, time costs, but also minimal storage fees), and the relatively low risk of being unable to offload the product, I can see why re-selling is seen as such an attractive 'business'.

The thirst is real...

Wow, if can sell for that amount i wouldn't mind selling mine too haha

Its not illegal to resell, if it is u wont see CNA glorifying scalping.

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/new...hypemaster-remus-singapore-13190860?cid=FBcna

So the one who reports are just general people who are sore.

In the world of ecommerce, companies buy the rights to be the sole distributor or sell a certain product in a country...they can also mark up prices. Same logic.

Its a willing buyer willing seller market. Same goes to buying a BTO and reselling it higher.

Its never wrong to resell.

i think u have the definition of a reseller confused with that of a scalper

reseller provides a service, anything wrong with the hardware can bring back to RMA, what after-sales service can a scalper provide?

it's not illegal, but it's definitely not a good culture to promote, so why not put a stop to it?

what scalpers did were to put a higher price based on the time and scarcity of the product (limited units at this point in time, but won't be in the near future), at unreasonable prices at that.

thereby robbing avid gamers of a chance to get the console purely for enjoyment (for functional aspect, not a collectible to be put on display, maybe some would i don't know), and not for resale

the examples you stated doesn't really apply to the situation here, much like comparing apples to oranges.

the shoes that the teen flips are meant to be collectibles, not meant to be worn (functional aspect is negligible/non-existent) and limited edition at that (collectibles-value high).

so they are meant to be traded around in the first place.

would anyone wear a $8k sneaker out to splash around in a puddle? i wouldn't

there will always be people reselling their flats for profit, hence the cooling measures have been put in place to discourage such behaviour.

so the question is, are you doing your part to discourage it, even though it's not illegal?

that being said, everyone has different moral compasses, otherwise there wouldn't be any need for laws, because like what you've said, it's not illegal anyway :s12:

what about scalping being used in the wrong situations?

remember the groceries/sanitiser hype-up we had back then during **?
not illegal according to your standards
imagine the government allowed that to happen? because scalping is not illegal?
willing buyers/sellers what, nothing wrong

so what about the poor who can't afford the high price?
and the elderly who couldn't get groceries because they are slower at snatching in ntuc?
leave them to their own demise according to your standards?
nth illegal here

what is happening is scalping is slowly becoming the norm and being applied to aspects that shouldn't even happen in the first place, because people like u think it's nth wrong, lack of consideration to others

As long as there's money to be made, reselling will always exist. Especially when the demand is feeding the market, when people are willing to pay higher to get it on day one.

So I agree with your stand on it, that it shouldn't be encouraged, though impossible to stop.

Though, I personally believe there should be a moral line to it. Necessities should never be purchased with the intent to resell, such as masks in that sense, medical needs or even basic foods during the supermarket rush.

But PS5, XBOX, 3080 GPUs, those are free for all.

When it comes to properties, I think that is a bit grey, because property has always been used as an investment tool, even though it is also tied to a real "need". But HDB makes it slightly harder to do so, due to the limitation on purchase and buying, yet it will never deter owners to still do it.

unfortunately this moral line doesn't exist with certain people

and yes, u are right, demand feeds supply

anyway this is a ps5 thread, we should get back to ps5 discussions

actually that sneaker kid, not all sneakers are sold at 8k of course. I am sure majority of his purchases can only fetch profits of $100 to $200.. like the air jordans, yeezys etc. That already is scalping because it prevents others who are genuinely wanting to buy the shoes to not have a chance because he is using bots to grab them and then reselling it.

hes still a scalper definitely.

But anyway my point is definitely its not illegal so no point wasting time reporting. Carousel wont do anything about it, because there are hundreds of scalpers selling hype sneakers every week. Once a Nike hype launch is drop, u will see 2 days before and after the launch, lotsa postings of the shoes much higher than retail.

But i do agree. Essential items like masks, sanitizers shouldnt be up for reselling. But its still not illegal, just a moral issue.

I am just gonna wait till the year end, let people review it, test first before getting it when the stocks are available.

The lack of clear info is kinda scary, with just 1 month + left to go.

wait till next year is gonna be okay, by then more games will be out, and assuming that the prices will drop along with the bundle

Yeah, more games at that time, and current games mostly still available on PS4.

And in case, any unexpected hardware issues, will arise too.

Look nice but till now still donno where can pre-order this headset, hope can grab one off shelves during PS5 launch date.

Hopeful that that will be the case... if really can’t get, will have to make do with the PS4 platinum wireless headset in the meantime, which I suppose should have support for the tempest 3d audio too..

All over the ear headphones will be supported. It isn't tied to the PS5 or PS4 headset.
