Key word is "as long as people are buying the games", if they see a sharp decline in PS4 game sales in moving forward, of course they will stop the development.

On the PS2 to PS3 transition and game support, below is quote from wikipedia which paints a vastly different picture than what you described.

"Even with the release of its successor, the PlayStation 3, the PS2 remained popular well into the seventh generation, and continued to be produced until 2013, when Sony finally announced it had been discontinued after over twelve years of production—one of the longest lifespans of a video game console. Despite the announcement, new games for the console continued to be produced until the end of 2013, including Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin for Japan, FIFA 13 for North America, and Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 for Europe. Repair services for the system in Japan ended on September 7, 2018."
I'm referring to first-party games developed by Sony Studios, not third-party studios. Final Fantasy, Fifa & PES are not developed by Sony. Those are third-party games by Square Enix, EA & Konami.

History shows when transitioning to a new generation, Sony doesn't do cross-gen titles. There's no slow gradual process. All new first-party games are immediately exclusive on the new console. Not cross-gen.

PS2 to PS3. Sony released PS3 exclusive games which weren't on PS2. No PS2 version. No Cross-Gen titles by Sony (Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune).

PS3 to PS4. Sony released PS4 exclusive games which weren't on PS3. No PS3 version. No Cross-Gen titles by Sony (Killzone SF, Infamous SS, Driveclub)

PS4 to PS5. This is the first generation transition that Sony is releasing Cross-Gen titles on 2 consoles (Spider-Man: MM, Horizon FW, Sackboy). In every previous generation transition, Sony doesn't do cross-gen titles.

I'm only referring to games developed & released by Sony. Not third-party studios.

Xbox series x look more and more tempting with game pass.

Really hope Sony exclusives make up for it ... the game prices quite off putting tbh plus all the region dlc nonsenses

Make snag a Series X as well ..

i nv really read up on what the xbox series X is coming up with. From what i gather, game pass is monthly sub with alot of games to download and play from day 1?

I am actually not a console gamer but more a pc fps gamer. i am just buying for family and guests to play the occasional fifa, racing games and yea spiderman seems fun.

1) will xbox better suit since theres a whole array of games for cheap? i saw its $1 for the first month and $19 subsequent

2) if i do purchase this xbox game pass ultimate, i can use that same sub for both PC and xbox?

Fair enough, but the way you wrote seems to downplay Sony's effort in the PS2 which means not painting the whole picture and not giving Sony credit where credit is due.

The PS2 is the BEST selling console ever, and that is not by chance. It had the most number of games released, longest hardware production timeline and game support in console history. Thanks to Sony's effort.

Sony produced the hardware and continued to produce and service it well pass 12 years, so you can't say they didn't support the system, regardless whether Sony produced the games or 3rd party produced the games.

Even if they didn't produce the games themselves, they still continue to allow 3rd party games and produce the hardware and servicing the hardware and support the system because it still matters. Because gamers still buying the hardware and games.

That is what it was and that is what it will be in PS4 to PS5 transition. I see continued support from Sony for PS4 well into 2024 and beyond. Which makes it an ideal system to buy for casual gaming families. :)

I think the availability of friendly games for PS2 n mods that allow NTSC U/C, NTSC J, PAL aka region free helps them to certain extend.

Actually if there is rampant piracy on any console it will die a instant death as dev will have no incentive to continue producing new games for it and will just abandon the system.

The fact that people keep buying PS2 games result in it having thousands and thousands of games throughout its lifetime.

For handheld consoles, I remember PlayStation Portable (PSP) had rampant piracy, but even piracy can't stop it from being successful. It went on to sell 80+ million units. Lower sales compared to Nintendo DS, yes. But outselling Nintendo 3DS (75+ million) in the all-time list is quite a major feat as Nintendo usually dominate the portable console market.

While PlayStation Vita doesn't even come close to the success of it's predecessor. It's a disappointment in comparison.

PS2 will forever hold top spot as the best selling console of all time. Huge library of quality games throughout its lifespan, full of variety as well.

155+ million sold is insane numbers for a home console, unlikely to be replicated again in the future. PS4 & PS5 sales numbers won't surpass it.

Excluding portable/handheld gaming system, PlayStation has 4 out of the top 5 best selling home consoles of all time.

Its safe to say PlayStation is king of home consoles, while Nintendo is untouchable & reign supreme for portable handheld gaming (Nintendo DS & Game Boy is massively successful. While Nintendo Wii remain the one & only Nintendo's home console to cross the 100 million mark).

1) There is a game pass $1 trick where you can convert XBL gold 36 month to game pass ultimate time.

2) yes applies to Xbox and PC

My gut feel is everything will go Netflix style ala game pass. The numbers that will matter will also be subscriber numbers, not just hardware sales.

Once gaming service becomes like Netflix style with cloud streaming gaming going mainstream ... I won’t be surprised if we see 100-150 million ww user count again.

Can start to see the change in direction ... Microsoft going back to more of a software house while Sony still need to figure out their value proposition beyond 1st parties imo. Nintendo will just Nintendo.

There are a number of parallels between TV/movie and game "subscription pass" plans.

I recall that before Netflix made it big, the consensus was that big-budget productions required viewers to pay-to-view. The concern was that if you put all the media up for cheap on a single subscription fee, then there is no incentive for the studios to develop quality media.

I don't know if there's a clear answer to that yet. Netflix is still in the initial phase of increasing market-share, so it's not clear how sustainable their model is in the long run. More importantly, Netflix has not killed the traditional pay-to-view model - there is still demand for movies, premium cable services etc.

The takeaway is that Game Pass will likely experience the same explosive growth that Netflix had. Soon you won't even need to explain to your relatives what Game Pass is, they will know it as well as they do Netflix. But at the same time, there will still be space for traditional games purchasing too.

Got one difference. Netflix can share cost and share account, gamepass cant. Haha.

Just saw a video saying people dig out news that Gamestop Employees in US pre-order all the PS5 stock and then sell it in Ebay. Apparently customers qued in line overnight but when the store open immediately no stock then say sold out yesterday when pre-order not even supposed to open yet.

Wonder if same thing happen here in some stores. Employee pre-order and sell on Carousell

Even if so, it's at least 1 or 2 pax. Seeing that most people managed to pre-order from the retailers. But I feel like the shops/stores will impose a limit on their own employees and such.

What is more likely is probably employees helping their friends to reserve a set:o

But I didn't see such complaints much. only complaint was on the Sony store and its limited stock - other retailers seemed to handle it or at least seemed to have stock quite fast. Gain City was limited to those who registered interest; Challenger/Hachi.tech sent early access email out but one of the bros here shared which helped a few people get their stock.

interesting that Challenger stopped taking orders after its batch ran out. But it is still taking orders for the series X for the later waves
