Just sharing about a great game:
I'd just beaten
Mortal Shell Enhanced (for the PS5) Edition last night.
It's a Soulsborne-esque game but with most of the RPG elements stripped off - no character customisation, no armour or specific upgradable stats (e.g. +1 to strength etc.) Instead you get to inhibit a few (Mortal) Shells of the dead who each has their own strengths/weaknesses (high stamina but low health/balanced/parry-focused/etc) and you take after them.
There are a few weapons for you to discover and you'll need to fight actual bosses in order to earn them. There are skill trees for each Mortal Shell (add kick ability and send foes to fall off the cliff, running without using any stamina, parry to regain resolve etc) and the discoverable weapons can also be upgraded with some materials you'll need to find during exploration. There are also items you can purchase or find to receive buffs temporarily. The quirky thing about it is that you won't know how the item works until you use it and the more you use it (with more familiarity), the game then reveals more information on it. Not sure if it's a bad/good thing, Sense of discovery when using for the first time VS Annoyance of wasting it?
There are no shields in the game and you either dodge or HARDEN which is a unique mechanic to the game. It allows you to "harden" (like turn to a rock statue) to block all incoming attacks but you will revert back once enough damage has been received and of course, there will be a cooldown time before you can use it again to prevent abuse. This adds another layer of defense when you aren't confident of dodging. Sometimes at the eleventh hour you know you can't dodge with no stamina left (like oh fffffff!!!!!), at least you can still harden to block that attack. This mechanic is pretty useful in some boss fights personally for me. Also, when your HP gets to 0, you will be ejected out of your Shell (leaving it behind) and you'll have a 2nd chance (a bit like resurrection) to dash to your shell very quickly (+ full health regained, so can be a strategy at times) before you take another hit OR you truly die afterwards. Oh man, that sense of panic at that moment. There's even a mode/trophy where you play with NO SHELLS and it's almost like ONE HIT KILL mode (super low health but very agile) which switches the Difficulty up quite a number of notches. Anyone looking for a "PUNISHING" time can try that - I have yet to try it for myself.
And yes, don't expect a full length game like Soulsborne series. I beat it in probably less than 20 hours or maybe just 15 hours. Going to do more of the extra/side stuffs and add another 3 or 4 hours perhaps post-game. And the price is also reasonable as well - SGD $27 incl. discount (original $42). It's an indie game which was made by just a few people (iirc) only and it's running at 4K 60fps (though twice or thrice I did observe some dips in frame rate, mostly pretty smooth). Rarely do we see Indie games at this level because if you see it for the first time, you probably won't think it's an Indie game.
I feel this game is great for people who want to start getting into Soulsborne games but particularly don't want a lengthy journey and without much of the equipment/stats management. Like a little sample to try try try.
Last words: Finally, I feel this PS5 thread needs to be filled with more of PS5/games discussion other than just
drops drops drops (I don't even know who is
scalper or true gamer anymore). I also notice some members often contributing to the thread, no need to mention, but you all know it yourselves lah

. I'm just contributing my little part with passion for games and hopefully it gets more gamers to start discussing more on games -
which is exactly the main purpose, yeeeaaahhhhhh?
