Just look at PC gaming... it's been digital since 2010s....

Except PC has an open market and more competition, you can choose which storefront to buy your games from and the discounts are generally quite good. For console, you can only buy from PS Store regardless of how expensive or how terrible the store is. PC also got options to back up your games through DRM-free installers from digital stores like GOG.

Ps5pro is my last console for sure, Sony getting rid of physical media is not a big factor for me, main thing is the lack of good ps exclusives. This console generation has been very disappointing for me.

Just checked my GOG account, 225 games on it.

Bought mainly old RPG games like Might & Magic series, point & click Adventure games like King's Quest series, and also classic FPS games like Heretic, Hexen etc. I've played most of them back then when they first released on PC, now rebuying on GOG just to play them again.

I have both Steam and PSN libraries but prefer to play games on sofa, big screen TV and game controller, hence why my PSN games are like 7 times more than Steam.

May look into installing SteamOS on one of my MiniPCs with Ryzen 7735HS and use as a low end steam machine. Currently already have another MiniPC running Batocera for retro gaming.

My main gaming PC is a Windows laptop with Ryzen 6800 & RTX3070Ti, also have another newer one with Ryzen 260 & RTX5060.

Looking forward to the upcoming PS6 handheld, as it compliments my current high end retro handheld using G3 Gen 3 chipset.

To be fair, the PSN store does have regular discounts on lots of games on a weekly basis, patience is the key. Also, you have to remember that the discounts are set by developers, not Sony. In terms of store discounts, Nintendo is the worse, I understand they never had discounts for their first party games, ever.

You pay full price on launch day for a game if cannot wait, but 3 or 6 months down the road there will be discounts on PSN and it can be substantial.

For me I've over 600 digital PS5/PS4 games and NONE of them bought at full price, in fact most are between 30% to 85% off. The highest priced digital game I've bought is the FFVII dual game pack at 10% or 20% off in 2024. Even physical game titles I only get them when heavily discounted.

If every game you wanted and you get them on launch day, it will be very expensive, regardless of digital or physical, and regardless of "open market" or not.

On a related note, the most expensive non limited/non collector edition game I've ever bought was Super Street Fighter II on SFC in 1994. I remembered the anticipation was so high back then that it was sold out everywhere and so the game stores marked up the game price, ended up paying around $250 just to secure the game cartridge as I wanted it so badly. In today's money that is around $560?

PlayStation's customer is the stock market, not gamers like us. Makes me hate AI even more...

I'll stick to physical games until 2028 then quit consoles all together. Stick to my backlogs and wait for steam or GoG sales from now onwards.

It's the end of an era. No choice but to accept it and move on.

PS5 ending physical disc is kinda Sony being low IQ+EQ in business sense tbh. Not everything should follow numbers directly. Most consumers buy digital over physical doesn't mean anything. Physical existence helps to drive up digital sales through it's existence alone.

In Singapore, see Qishan and other game stores actively promote their physical edition of the games on social platforms. That alone is like free advertisement for the PS5 brand and the games. Many gamers saw the physical edition of the games, then it helps to validate their interests and buy the digital. Physical editions drives up digital sales and make gamers remember playstation exists. It's so important for physical editions to remain in existence for the brand visibility. Physical copies doesn't have to sell well. It just have to remain visible in the physical world.

Consoles with physical edition games (PS/Nintendo/xbox) are generally more popular than (PC & other digital-only consoles) because their good brand visibility in physical world through this kind of passive marketting from physical games on the market. Sony truly failed to understand how this works. They just went, "Oh~ our numbers shows more people buy digital over physical, so let's end physical games." Sony seriously that narrow-minded.

Plus the fact that they are dominating in the console space, they can do whatever they want, we have no other choice lol.

Doing this useless PS5 Blackout for a week, end up I purchase more physical game than ever cause I got time to browse the web , am such a failure.

But now I got so much backlog that I might need a PS5 Pro with Disc Drive as backup incase my PS5 dies.
