the explanation from older space enthusiast is that (insert big company name) 's customer isn't the average joe , they no need to care about internet campers feelings or brand image , as long they satisfy nasa or pentagon it's fine - no need waste effort doing extra

this news sound very "dumb"

nasa planned a robot car to explore the permanently shadowed crater on moon
pandemic delayed the internal science instruments ... only after receive then assemble the car chassis
now the car is fully assembled but cost estimate overshoot , testing schedule overshoot ...... when it miss the future rocket launch opportunity it will be delayed by another 1 year of empty waiting while they still must pay salary
they decided to just cancel the whole car project the 322million contract to transport the car onto lunar surface will proceed but they will launch a useless metal block instead
nasa is waiting for proposals due 1august on which commercial company will accept the free robot car and place it on the moon at $0 cost
