I wonder how much you guys change per trip. Usually I will change around S$500-1k for a trip to JB. I don't really care about the exchange cos the difference for changing S$1k, at most you save RM10-20. If you purposely drive to a place to change, considering the petrol/carpark and time, I don't think it's worth the effort. For larger amount usually for KL/genting trips, I rather use Wise instead. It also has a debit card which you can pay in Ringgit or top up eTNG

I prefer cashless nowadays, both SG and overseas. Maybe it is the new normal post-COVID.

I still carry a bit of cash but I don't feel comfortable carrying S$500-1k around the streets of MY if no huge purchase is expected. If you are travelling with family, ask each person to carry say S$100, rather than one person hold all. Applies to other countries too.

Have more than one credit/debit card with you and put them in different wallets. One of my CC got blocked cos they found the overseas transactions suspicious. The bank couldn't get through to me on my SG number cos I changed SIM card. I only knew when the next transaction got rejected and called them up.

Agreed if you are not changing S$10k, no point driving/MRT just to get the best exchange rate. Just change wherever is on the way and convenient.

What's your preferred cashless payment methods? I've the YouTrip card, and other than my SG credit cards, I'd really like to use those eWallets. Tried to use their BoostPay but realized reloads can only be done with MY cards...

I'm using ICBC Global Travel, have 3% cashback. I know Youtrip may be better, but my spending is not that high. Troublesome to maintain so many e-wallets and finding ways to empty it when it is no longer attractive to use. Credit card still better than debit if there is dispute of transactions imo.

I'm hesitating top up TnG e-wallet although convenient to use at the shops. I have VEP(RFID) tag on my car and read that double charge (1 on RFID and 1 on TnG card) is common. Will consider when the system is more stable.

I also now prefer cashless and esp. in MY.
dont like the coins they give. sometimes the notes also cui one.

My combi as i have CIMB account:
- CIMB debit card for small/predictable purchases.
- last min or emergency: InstaREM + Mastercard for large purchases (i think the exchange rate is reasonable)

Really nice to see that the thread that I created many years ago is still being used and helpful to everyone even before RM was 3.xx and its still being updated. :)

Now going cashless or using ATM to withdraw money out from banks like Maybank etc is the best choice, better than queuing at the money changer. Pre-covid, I have tried using cards like Youtrip and gotten very good exchange rates at the stores and also tried withdrawing money from Maybank MY ATM from my Maybank SG a/c All have better rates than any money changer in SG/JB. No commission or service fees.

But eTNG is still a nightmare to use though. Most of the discount and lobangs all reserved for Malaysian ID registered accounts only. Though there are ways around it but not sure if it still works now. lol. Refunds/withdrawals is also a big concern. So don't put too much money into the e-wallet or it may get stuck.

Yes. YouTrip supports e-wallet for fixed set of 10 currencies. Ringgit is not one of the 10. For ringgit spending, the exchange only happens when you use the S$ in the e-wallet as a credit card payment.
