(USB) is an industry standard developed in the mid-1990s that defines the cables, connectors and communications protocols used in a bus for connection, communication, and power supply between computers and electronic devices.

Universal Serial Bus Version

USB 3.1 - Released July 2013
Mode: SuperSpeed +
Data rate: 10 Gbit/s
USB 3.0 - Released November 2008
Mode: SuperSpeed
Data rate: 5 Gbit/s
USB 2.0 - Released April 2000
Mode: Hi-Speed
Data rate: 480Mbit/s
USB 1.1 - Released August 1998
Mode: Full Speed
Data rate: 12Mbit/s
USB 1.0 - Released January 1996
Mode: Low Speed
Data rate: 1.5Mbit/s

USB was designed to standardize the connection of computer peripherals (including keyboards, pointing devices, digital cameras, printers, portable media players, disk drives and network adapters) to personal computers, both to communicate and to supply electric power.

The ASMedia ASM1142 connects to the chipset by using two PCIe Gen 2.0 lanes which gives it a bi-directional throughput of 2 GB/sec. It's less of what USB 3.1 is capable of, but plenty fast by today's standards. The USB 3.1 type-A motherboard connectors will be colored in a somewhat green lime color to indicate 3.1 whereas USB 3.0 uses the blue coloring and USB 2.0 black.

Guru3D review a USB 3.1 motherboard from ASUS alongside a Samsung 840 EVO RAID SSD based storage unit that is USB 3.1 compatible. Recently we have tested USB 3.0 SSDs from Samsung (the T1) and that performance was amazing at roughly 400 MB/s. With USB 3.1 now becoming available things change once again as we can reach speeds of an excess of 600 to 700 Mb/s over USB 3.1, and in this article we'll show you all the details involved, and some performance numbers of course.

We start off with CrystalDiskMark
