i know that but when i go to map, select 'make available offine' and search tokyo (Shinjuku) area, the message state 'offline map is not available in selected area'
the caching works for singapore though.

Try changing the browser settings to Japan locality then try again.

I used the labs function and manually cache by loading all the map tiles while on wifi.

I'm still curious this labs function that lapucelle was talking about...
esp. since the offline map caching feature is not supported in Japan on Google Map at the moment?

I think it only works on older version of Google Maps.

sorry for digging old thread. is there a recommendation for offline maps + offline directions? i.e. something like google maps public transit directions or walking directions, without touching data connection?

if not, is citymaps2go the only option now? :s11::s11::s11:

also, how do you guys plan out the trip and directions? i used to use google maps (my Places) to pin all the locations, but it's not available for Japan (unless i downgrade). any alternatives i can try to map my trip?

Google map once you use for that area, it will save a cache copy. It will work with GPS and tell your location. The only thing not working is the routing and attractions detail which require real time data. So you need google routing, you need data plan. If not, go hotel, use the wireless. Search the location, you will get the cache.

how exactly does the caching work? e.g. if i zoom at 50% level and browse around tokyo map (when in SG), it will only cache the 50% zoom details? Do i need to zoom all the way in for it to cache the details?

how much is the cheapest data sim card that i can get over in tokyo? is it the Bmobile prepaid card? (and can it work in hakone/kyoto as well)?

you will not get up to street view and building outline detail, the min is major and small roads with names. :o good enough for basic lvl navigation, eg. you will not get lost since you also have compass. the bad is for example you need to go to a station, it will not show, u need to noe where is the station at which street.

Citymaps2Go is the better option.
I'm use them on my trip to tokyo last year.
And I'll be using again this weekend again (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto).
If there is any promo or offer for this app, just buy them.

hmm what do u mean by the 'route'? i downloaded the entire tokyo prefecture and i'm trying it as i type right now - it is able to search for the stations, but that's all it does. no routing info, timetable (i understand there's hyperdia for that), or what bus to take to go to particular attractions.

also, it doesn't have some of the attractions - e.g. sensoji temple is not inside.. :o

lastly, the app is quite laggy as compared to Gmaps (tiles really load one by one on my Note 1). is it the same for u guys?

it's free for 5 maps actually.. lol.

for other countries (e.g. europe/us), i'll definitely stick to tomtom/sygic.
