S20 FE vs OP 8T
Had the chance to test out both, sharing some thoughts here:
Touch issues
Probably the topic that has generated the most discussions for the S20 FE. The original firmware has serious touch issues when charging, and also multi touch issues. These have largely been resolved and will not be noticeable in normal social media browsing. Gaming involving multi touch and swipes may still pose a problem.
Display
Both have really nice displays, but the OnePlus has more modes for selection. I wish the S20 FE has a mode in between the normal and the boosted/ vivid options. Auto brightness is better on the OP 8T, but the brightness is very slow to respond when manually adjusting the slider - maybe showing off the 8192 levels?
I prefer the hole punch at the corner as it is less noticeable for media consumption. I did not find the "metal ring" on the S20 FE front cam that annoying.
Haptics
OnePlus the clear winner in terms of feel when typing. I was a bit surprised at the sound coming from the haptic system though, for notifications where the vibration duration is longer.
Software
Aesthetics wise I prefer the cleaner looking Oxygen OS over OneUI - those big rounded rectangles in the notification area do not appeal to me. There are some nice cosmetic tweaks from OnePlus, such as the rotation animation. There were some minor complaints I have on OneUI (e.g. having the whole screen at full brightness for a split second after reading fingerprint).
Good Lock is an excellent piece of software though on the S20 FE, but the OP 8T potentially takes things to the next level with root, magisk support and custom rom options.
The fingerprint reader felt faster and more consistent on the OP 8T, and it allows you to add more than three! However, it requires a double tap to first wake the screen. S20 FE can sense that your finger is on the reader area, and immediately unlocks with one touch. For those who use face unlock, OP 8T's implementation is better. Google Pay seems just that small bit quicker on the OP 8T.
Camera
Initial reviews on the OP 8T camera performance suggested horrible white balance issues in some scenes. I've yet to test out the OP 8T camera in detail, but working GCam apks are available, and they offer a different take on how the white balance should be. The 3x zoom on the S20 FE is worth a mention, and I've not been disappointed in the photos taken by the S20 FE.
Phone calls
Inability to have VoLTE on the latest OP 8T update is not a show stopper for me. The OP 8T sounds louder in calls based on a small sample size.
Others
S20 FE's speakers sound better, and also are more balanced (left vs right). The OP 8T's ringer mode toggle is rather unique but I hardly take my phone out of vibration mode, so that's not that useful for me.
The glass back on the OP 8T feels and looks great. However, I will not use it without a case.
OP 8T's 65W charging is amazing if you don't like charging overnight. However, only the S20 FE has wireless charging capabilities. Based on usage over a few days, the S20 FE seems to have slightly better battery life, in the range of 5-10% more. This will require a longer test period for the OP 8T though.
Package wise, OnePlus includes a 65W charger, very decent case, and a pre-applied screen protector. It is nice having these out of the box, instead of having to wait for a case or protector to arrive.
MicroSD expansion on S20 FE is good to have, and I am still used to the volume key placement on the right. Kept taking screenshots on the OP 8T for this reason.
