I believe that there is a microchip in the iphone cable which the newer iOS will check. I am not sure if the good compatible cables has that same chip or some other way to pass the test.

I bought quite a number of 3rd party cables as the quality differs a lot, as is the price:

1) Belkin (bought from Tmall for about SGD 15) - good quality with MFi (offical Apple certification - Made for iPhone). Charges quickly and no problem with 5s

2) Pisen (China brand, bought for about SGD 7) - good quality (not certified with MFi though). Charges quickly and no problem with 5s

3) Qoo 3rd-party cables - cheap, poor quality and charges slowly. Works for 1-4 weeks, then either fall apart, or the message about not certified to work with iPhone starts to appear. Don't waste your money on these.

Bought it from a shop in Nanjing (RMB 35) when I was on business trip.

I've seen it being sold in other China cities but usually more expensive at around RMB 55.

Suggest go for original cable, or authorized vendor. If not will end up wasting money buying so many cheap and useless cables.

I believe any reputable brands for apple accessories and cables should work well
