Palit GPUs: What do you think?

I'm currently using a Gigabyte 560 Ti and its high time I upgrade my GPU to something better.

I'm thinking of getting a GTX 970 but stuck between either an MSI GTX970 Gaming or Palit GTX 970 Jetstream.
The difference in price is close to 100 SGD. I would've jump the gun on MSI if the difference was $40-50.

I've seen the Palit 970 Jetstream reviews from across the net, and they all average around 8.7/10 stars. However, I have no experience with Palit GPUs before. And would like to see your input. Would the "lesser build quality" of Palit's GPU come back to haunt me 3-4years down line? Or should I not worry about it since there's Warranty? Please advise!

I am also aware that MSI 970 has better build quality over the Palit 970, as seen in this video:

However, I am willing to save as much dosh as possible. Any thoughts/inputs would be much appreciated.

Everybody is just suspicious of the build quality cos it's cheaper than the competition . But you don't see anyone complaining or telling others to boycott the brand here or anywhere else .

I think for GTX 970 the build quality is not the issue, main issue is if u get a card that exhibits coil whine. Coil whine is brand independent and part of the graphics card lottery. If u get a 970 card (wadever brand) that exhibits no coil whine, that would be better than having the best build card coz if card spoil can RMA, but if got coil whine, very low chance of getting it replaced via RMA.

At this point of time, I won't even recommend the 970. It's the only card in hat mid tier segment that has vram issues. And probably won't last till the next Gen worth of cards. For that kind of money, Try finding sapphire r9 390 8gb nitro.

It is a better performer, more vram and highly clocked.

The only downside is the slightly higher heat output and more power consumption.

Let's move on to price premium paid between brands etc.

Every gpu model, Aib partners will provide their best cooling option for the card. Next is, if the card is deemed popular, they will tend to have differrent type of edition for that particular gpu model.

Example: gtx970 was popular back then. Msi came out the gaming edition, then came out the golden edition, then lastly the armor edition. All different price segment that ranges from $485-$649.

Different performance, and different cooler being strapped on.

Different aib partners have different offerings, not say palit is the worse brand, it is just lesser known, they are pure Nvidia aib partners, just like sapphire or powercolour is pure aib partners for amd. Pure aib do have good brands and offerings to.

Depending on the gpu they made. Usually they are cheaper than major brands. Reference cards offers no difference across all brands. But when it comes to non reference, each brands will show their cooler for example....

Sapphire - DualX, TriX and lastly their VaporX
Powercolor - PCS, PCS+
Msi - Twin Frozr V, Tri Frozr (lightning series)
Asus - DCUII, strix and whatever Rog brandings
Gigabyte - Windforce
Leadtek - hurricane

And the list goes on.

Usually the major brands will spend and offer a lot on their cooler implemented. The way they design it. Many things like fan technology, heat pipes implemented and placement etc. Pure aib partners will come out their top tier coolers like the sapphire VaporX to compete with major brands. Usually top tier coolers the aib partners have redesigned the entire PCB. It offers higher overclocking, more power delivery, better efficient cooler, basically much much better performance out of the box.

For the lower tier cooler, it is targetted for people whom are on budget. Offers lesser cooling abilities and to some, it skimp on components, or use their own components to be implemented on their cooler.

Palit gtx970 skimps by using a old PCB layout that was found in older gtx670 gtx760. Furthermore their cooler jetstream is a very old cooler. It doesn't cool that well as compared to the major brands out there.

Msi gtx970 armor spotted a better components and gaming edition PCB. But offers a cheaper range as they using an older twin Frozr 4 advanced technology. Not that cool than gaming edition, but it is definitely a better buy over the plait offering.

Nevertheless, I would not recommend 970 as a whole. R9 390 8gb will be a better performer out there.

And also gpu faulty is a Heng suay thing.

Very comprehensive post. imo i will rather spend the money on a better performer than on a better cooler but that's just me

I was in same situation as you couple weeks ago choosing 980ti. Ultimately wanted gigabyte one, but no stock so went with zotac as most competitively priced. I paid around 1k for the card which is 100 cheaper than most other non red brands. Card works perfect has 5 year warranty and ta really hard to say one brand is better than the next. I've had asus mb fail on me one year after purchase and MSI board lasting 8 years...

If I were you I would not get 970 tho for reason Roy mentioned. The 390 makes much more sense at that price point. Before I decided to splurge on 980ti I was preferring 390 over 970

If you ask how is a certain brands here, you will get two type of answers.

One is above me, his card go kaput.

Another one is a few post above me, his card is 3 yrs more and going strong.

So who you believe??
