U are being selfish
Smoking is a way of life

U dont smoke yet u demand smokers to quit for u

Singapore government leaders rotten citizens like the above commenter also rotten

Singaporean core - rotten-

Everyone

Not-in-my-own-backyard

more like your logic is rotten to the core. You want to smoke, sure go ahead. but if your habits/behavior affects others, it is not long just your problem, its everybody's problem. Who is the selfish one here?:s11:

By your logic, I can blast music in the middle of the night because I like music, those that demand i off it is selfish because they dont like music? :s22:

actually im really curious, even if this law exist, how they going to enforce? mandatory install smoke detector in all home? camera looking at windows(which is a serious violation of privacy). or traditional way of employing "smoke enforcers" ?

... want to act smart and have a "comeback" at least come up with a smarter comeback la. you are like one of those comparing NS(compulsory ) to women giving birth(Their choice).

Similarly, smoking is a choice, dont smoke you wont die. But transport is essential. get the difference bo small boi?

If you want argue transport is optional, sure from now on you/your family can walk to work(and I dont smoke) fair or not? :s22:

like this..

NLvo7p.gif

i think this is pretty feasible.

retrofit all old buildings with a big aircon cubicle at void deck.

new buildings will be built with small aircon cubicle every 5 floors.

implement smoking license. you pay a monthly fee to be deducted by GIRO (like parking fees like that)

cubicle can only be accessed with singpass verification.

smoking outside of such cubicles can then be illegal.

can't care less if you smoke, but keep the smoke to yourself.

on the road you can barely/rarely detect the exhaust from cars, but the second hand smoke is obvious even if one is 10 meters aways.

love it whenever I see this while I travel, smokers intoxicating themselves.

The air pollution emitted by cigarettes is 10 times greater than diesel car exhaust, a small Italian study finds. Researchers compared the particulate matter in the exhaust fumes from a modern car engine, fuelled with low-sulphur diesel, and in cigarette smoke.

inhaling exhaust fume is ok???? u walk along the road, not afraid of cancer? :s22:

this excuse again...

u make importing cigarettes illegal... treat it like importing drugs... death penalty for importing XX kg of cigarettes... see how big ur black market can be.... :s13:

and even if u got black market... den only the rich ppl can afford lor cos it'll going to be very $$$...

Enforcing drugs actually takes up a lot of resources ie. Machine, equipment, dogs and man hour. What makes it worthwhile is that the negative externalities of not banning it weigh more than that of the resources put in.

Ciggs is not in the same category when it comes to negative externalities. Ie not worth the extra tax money put in to enforce and storm it out. It is more like a non aedes mosquito that sucks your blood slowly but surely. Yes it is irritating but not worth burning down your house to kill it.

Well, i would argue that smoking IS essential, from an anthropological pov.
But i digress, i forsee that there will eventually be drastically less smokers overall in the world.
It's also why I'm very disappointed that they (big tobacco lobbyist) have politicised the CDC and most country's health management by demonising vaping.

that is a valid point...

but what i was saying is on the point of "black market" ... using "black market" as a reason to not support banning cigarettes is a more like a red herring...

Instead of using a broad brush to solve this problem, perhaps it may be more effective to have solutions which target the sectors with the most smokers.

For example;
- majority of smokers are male
- the largest group comes from people with secondary education
- the race with the highest percentage of smoker, by far, is the Malays (despite smoking is haram and virtually all Malays are Muslims, which is an interesting but separate topic).

Sources:
1) 8 of 10 smokers are male
https://www.asiaone.com/health/45-population-addicted-smoking

2) the biggest group - 34.8 per cent - are those who have completed secondary school.
https://www.asiaone.com/health/45-population-addicted-smoking

3)According to the National Health Survey (NHS) 2010, the smoking prevalence for the Malay community increased from about 18 per cent in 2004 to nearly 27 per cent in 2010, which was significantly higher than the national prevalence of about 14 per cent.
