IMO RDR2, CP77, RE Village, HZD, God of War are some great games that take advantage of HDR.

Using AW3423DW
HDR1000 mode in game, SDR for normal browsing
Creator preset [DCI-P3, 2.2 gamma]
Windows HDR Calibration app 0.0min, 1010 max, 20% saturation.
Auto HDR turned ON.

Been an absolute blast with these settings, assuming you can get your room dim enough. The monitor is quite bad in daylight. Because of this monitor I actually invested in some day blinds to darken my room if gaming during the day.

This really wonderful combination you got (y)

After using the windows calibration app do you still encounter any issue like after HDR gaming the return to windows SDR mode become dull color?

So far I do not experience this SDR issue anymore after using the windows HDR app.

No issues whatsoever on my end, with or without HDR app. AW3423DW handles it pretty well.

What is the correct way to use HDR on dell s2721dgf?
I turned on the smart HDR: desktop with the monitor osd, and turned on auto HDR in win 11 setting.
Launch game, for example, spiderman, when I turn the ingame setting HDR on it became so washed, am I supposed to leave it as off?

FYI your monitor have a new driver but it is "optional" to install:

https://www.dell.com/support/home/e...scode=wt64a&productcode=dell-s2721dgf-monitor
updated user guide:

https://dl.dell.com/content/manual72679643-dell-s2721dgf-monitor-user-s-guide.pdf?language=en-us
you may need to double check you are using HDMI 2.0 cable and resolution set at 1440p 144Hz as stated in the manual, or if you are using DP1.4 cable try lower the refresh rate to 144Hz

1669658051023.png

(Normally there will be some limitation for HDR display especially for IPS panel, example my 4K IPS monitor is capable of 144Hz using dual DP1.4 cables, but the HDR is only work at 120Hz through single DP1.4 cable)

Looking at the manual you could try activate "Game HDR"

1669656582765.png

Next go to "Setting > Display > Advance display" (screenshot below) to check your peak brightness of the windows connected to your monitor and use this nits figures to calibrate using the windows HDR tool mentioned below.

1669657121694.png

Next download the windows HDR calibration tool (only available in Windows 11)

1669656942563.png

after save the HDR calibration profile please try to activate the in game HDR mode again and try.

I believe not many owners of s2721dgf are using HDR now, however I am very happy that you are willing to explore into this territory :)

Hope you will enjoy the HDR experience as I do and I have been gaming with HDR on Horizon Zero Dawn currently clocking 50 hours and it really great with all the special lighting effects all around.

Still having the same issue. Best setting visually would be just turn on window Auto HDR via shortcut and leave the ingame hdr off. Yea it's not real HDR but seem pretty enjoyable so far for the brief amount of time I've with it on.

I didn't have spiderman game, but based on my experience some game when not in real full screen mode (borderless full screen & windows mode best to use Auto HDR)

If the game can enabled real full screen it is best use in game HDR.

I do experience some game you will need full screen setting to enjoy the in game HDR.

Just need some experiment to adjust your own preference of in game HDR or the Auto HDR which both should work pretty well.

This is where windows 10 HDR cannot cope.

Too bad some games have bad HDR "auto" detection... E.g Anthem. I have to manually turn off windows auto-hdr (System->display->graphics , Anthem.exe options ) for the game, even so I still have to go in-game toggle between windows and fullscreen for it to work.

If I don't do this, my monitor color will become psychedelic when I launch the game.

Also , if I set HDR to off in-game and uses auto-hdr. It does not look as good as the real thing...

Today playing with these 2 color profiles from my monitor with HDR (Horizon Zero Dawn) :

1. RGB 8 bpc Full dynamic range
2. YCbCR422 10 bpc Limited range

option 1 still give me better and wow effect in HDR color and lighting rendering :) even though it is only 8 bpc

option 2 give me more natural HDR effect that seems less impact than the full dynamic range.

wondering if anyone have test your monitor with different color range profile on HDR game.

To be honest, with or without HDR enabled, the image quality in games or shows will be better on an OLED screen. That's because the black is black, not grey. So it will be very contrasty even if HDR is disabled. It may not go as bright without HDR enabled, but it is still better than a normal edge lit monitor especially when the ambient is dark or dimly lit.

PC cyberpunk comparison HDR vs SDR.

Recommended to watch with HDR enabled monitor or mobile phone to see the real difference

Unfortunately, I feel that proper HDR for PC gaming is still way too expensive for most people. A good mini LED or OLED monitor will set one back by over 1.5K now. You can get TV for around 2K, but its too big for me to use as a monitor.
