PE Board (professional engineer)

Hi,
Just returned from the PE BOARD @ jem office tower. Went to inquire and clarify some stuffs and just sharing it in forum.

I only enquired about electrical. I believr mechanical will be the same.
Only NTU/NUS is recognised by the board here.

Those in
PSB (Newcastle, coventry)
MDIS
SIT (TUM, Newcastle) ,
Are NOT recognised by the board. One may think the board will recognise if you complete half or more of your total modules in the home campus, this is not true. Will still not be recognised.

EVEN if you topup your current degree with NTU/NUS Naster, chances are still veryveryvery low and the staff suggested not to. As in her history of working there, only seen 1-2person managed to take the pe exam. So no point.

So i asked, what are the options for students who couldn't get into ntu/nus.
The staff suggested,

1. After poly, go to Malaysia university and complete the degree there. As long the degree is accredited by "engineers board of Malaysia", the local PE board here will recognise. This is the cheapest option. Or you can go to Australia/UK/germany to study their degree there. But of course, if you go aussie for example, the degree must be accredited by "engineers australia".

Those studying in PSB uni of Newcastle for example, even though it is accredited by engineers Australia, the board here will still not recognise. However, Aussie PE Board will recognise and u can be PE there.

I asked, what if i be PE in Australia and come back to SG, is it possible to convert? Answer is : NO.



Just sharing.

Summary,
basically if you cant get into ntu/nus, just go overseas uni and make sure its accredited. Cheapest option is Malaysia. Nearer and cheaper.


Do not believe if any of the private U's told u it is recognised by the board here. Because it isn't.

Those who has high gpa and are able to get into ntu/nus, my advise is dont be stupid to go SIT. Just go ntu/nus.

Was seriously considering to take a master program but if i low chance of getting into PEB, i might as well go civil servant liao

I would like to know if you do plan to go overseas to try your luck? (chinese experience discrimination in Malaysia I guess?)

nah. i don't plan to go oversea/get masters.
Totally gave up on this PE thing liao.
Just feel being "short-changed" in a way for those of us not able to get into ntu/nus

Any idea how recognised is a SIT degree in Mechanical Design Engineering as compared to SUTD's Degree in the Engineering Product Development pillar specialising in Mechanical Engineering?

I did some research but ended up with mixed results; SUTD's degree is recognised by the Institute of Engineers Singapore while the SIT's degree isn't.
Not too sure if accreditation by the Institute of Engineers Singapore is even that big of a deal, since both unis are recognised by the government.

1) What can we do when we are shortage of Singaporeans who have the necessary qualification to do the jobs and have to relies on Foreigners who have it. Those work in industries like Construction, you will be laughing at 'quality and high rankings' that a lot of Singaporeans do not benefits from Singapore education system to get the necessary qualification to advance or even 'start' their career. However foreigners have the necessary qualification from their home countries but do not have a clue of what they learn from their engineering collage when we give them technical questions. Sad true facts.

2) Want to study in Malaysia also hard but will it be easier to buy a degree mill? Last time when I was working in HR Industry, the most powerful background verification & source is to buy a degree mill from an 'agent' & your record will really shown in university data. The bad part is that the university is from Malaysia & it is odd to have Singaporean graduate from there that the 'agent' will reject your offer to prevent problem in future.

3) So really have to give up PE Status.

Only small % Engineers are qualified to be registered with PEB but they can still be highly employable.

Not all ABET accredited programs were be recognized by PEB Sg.

Only those accreditation commission from Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) will be recognized by PEB Sg.

Other PEB Sg information remain the same such as on campus study mode & not by distance learning mode.

All engineering programs accredited by Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) under ABET is accredited. So long u are doing electrical or Chen or mech all these program acccreditation all go thru EAC in ABET. So all electrical engineering accredited program will be accredited. Computer sci no need PE

SIT website did not quote it is recognize by PEB Sg to become PE. Video at 2:55 minutes did quote 'MEngTech graduates will be eligible for PE in Singapore or CE in the UK' but it has never been quoted by PEB Sg.

The Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (Building Services) programme is not major in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical. This programme trained you to become a Facilitates Engineer & not PE.

I feels SIT is not ethical to use this video for puffing the word 'eligible' & at the same time it can be sued for false/misleading advertising. Before anyone can sued SIT, one must graduate from the 4 years course & follow by more then 2 years of working before their application can be rejected by PEB Sg.

However, I think SIT approach may already know that their graduate may not be able to get the necessary job title & experience because of their qualification cannot get them into relevant jobs. So end up is their graduate problem of not meeting the requirement & not SIT qualification have problem.

So any volunteer to prove my hypothesis?

Not true. Elect, Mech, Civil, Chem courses may fall under Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) which is not recognized by PEB Sg.
