I came across this while reading the papers last month.
when i went to check the link (Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival), i saw the dates for 2015, 2015/02/22 - 2015/03/05.

thinking of planning way ahead, planning for my trip in 2016 and to add this event in.

some questions i need to ask Taiwan travel experts and those who went for this event before. :D

  • it seems that the dates are not fixed. when are the dates for 2016 going to be confirmed?
  • the location of the festival not necessarily at Ping Xi? i read that it could be at Ping Xi or Shifen?
  • how early should i try to be at the actual location?
  • i read that there are multiple release? is that the case?
  • i'm thinking of where to stay if i were to go for this event. wondering if i should stay nearby?

apologies for the many questions at once. thanks in advance.

for those who are interested in this as well, another reference I looked at, the 2014 edition, http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/taiwan-291/pingxi-lantern-2014-14-feb-4564075-4.html

If you visit Taiwan between CNY and Sky Lantern Festival, 15 days after CNY, you can also join sky Lantern celebration which is held by the New Taipei City Government. The government usually will hold 3 times of group lunching sky lantern activities. The last one, the biggest, is held on Sky Lantern Festival at Shifen. The dates of first and second activity are different year by year, according to the day of weekend of holiday in Taiwan.

There will about free 10 rounds of group(ranging between 50~100 people) lunching sky lantern at each activities. If you are not able to register for the group lunching, you also have the high opportunity to join the group lunching since lots people may leave if their lunching orders are late. The will be direct bus between MRT Taipei Zoo Station & the activity location. There will be 2 waiting lines for the return bus, one for seat and another line for standing. You can wait in the line for standing if you don't mind standing 30 minute in the bus.

There will be over 10 runs of massive lunching for each even places and there are about 50~100 sky lanterns flying to the sky together.you need to apply for the free sky lantern at the first hour when it is open to register. Although you can register at the event day at 11am, however, you need to wait there until 7pm. In fact, lots people will leave before their lunching time if their lunching run is after 8:30pm. The staff will ask loudly whether any people will join the massive lunching sky lantern.

About the transportation, there will be special direct bus between Taipei Zoo Station and the event place. It takes about 40~60m and cost NTD 50 for round ticket. You don't need to wait too long for the bus to the event places. But the queues for the return bus will be long.. There are 2 queues waiting for the return bus, seats & non-seats. The queue for non-seat will be shorter. It took me about 10~15m for the non-seat queue at Pinxi last year. The queue for seats may takes more than one hour.
