why 508XG when you can get full 1080p HD at much lower price?

I think the buyer needs to examine the screen to see which is of better quality than to be fooled by specs

A full HD panel is not always better. And for smaller screens <50" if you sit more than 2.5m away the full HD effect is moot.

I have both HD and full HD panels, guess which one I use more?

As for prices, try Merdeka, in SLS, get their number from google or Yellow pages and ask, then post it here, but after the recent promos, the price might go up a bit then down somemore.

$4999 for 507XG at harvey norman, think this is just for show kind of price, but display set nia....

427XG is $2799 already, dunno what kind of price HongLiang will offer lol! Guess it's not tough to get 427XG for $2500 before December

Size matter, but....

There has been a lot of talk of TV size and full HD etc
If the TV is under 40" or so, and you are not using it as a PC monitor for a HTPC based setup, that full HD or not is quite moot...

The charts and suggested distances are based on experience, by THX and other people who have worked it out, not merely nonsense, so if someone claims the distances are mere nonsense or conjecture, take it with a pinch of salt....

But what is your budget only allows a small screen?
Say 32" or even smaller?

Fret not, no doubt bigger can bring you closer to the cinematic experience, all is not lost.

Sit a little closer, and put on a nice movie and NO WORRIES. Its all about fun and I have lived with a 9" b/w TV when I was studying and it was still fun. Reception was lousy but the storyline and the company whilst watching made it all the more fun.

So whatever you buy, if you have bought it or settled on something, then just sit back and enjoy!

Any pio owners can advise me how to get my 427 to display 1080p at 24fps when connected to PS3? Currently my games are displayed at default 720p - example Resistance Fall of Man, Oblivion. Looks great already but wonder what 1080p would look like? Is it a software or something I can adjust?

nope.. highest u can go is 1080i on the ps3 for 427

The Pioneer will then downscale it to its native 720p resolution.

The screen size depends on your viewing distance, see the calculator in earlier posts.
Bear in mind a 32" is much smaller than a 29" 4:3 CRT for SD TV. After you buy one, then you will see how puny the screen size is.

Sorry, I felt this statement was rather misleading.

I have a 29" 4:3 CRT TV (which is only 27" viewable). My friend has a 32" LCD TV and I feel that it is much bigger in size than my tv so I checked the difference at tvcalculator.com.

4:3 source image -> CRT image is bigger that LCD by only 7.3%

So a 32" LCD might be a little smaller when displaying 4:3 video but not by much (i wouldn't call it puny) and the 32" LCD is MUCH bigger when viewing widescreen video.

For perspective:
16:9 source image -> LCD image is bigger than CRT by a whopping 66%
1.85:1 source image -> LCD image is bigger than CRT by 67%
2.35:1 source image -> LCD image is bigger than CRT by 67%

So I think the two are quite comparable and owners of 29" CRT TVs can upgrade to 32" LCDs without worrying about physical image size being too small.

Granted the TV itself will look smaller given that LCD TVs have thin bezels and are so slim(duh!) compared to the CRT that you're so used to, but rest assured your widescreen movies/gaming will play much bigger.

I had just purchase this TV, just want to check what are the best settings for this plasma TV ?
Currently for mine using with SCV HD set Top Box and upscale to 1080i,

Contrast: 45
Brightness and the rest : 0 (Neutral)

All NR : ON

Power save: Mode 1

Light sensor: On

Sound: Tru-surround


My viewing distance is about 1m and when I watch it for 2 hours, my head gets slightly giddy. I may have the wrong setting or my viewing distance may be too close. Any advise for me pls ?

no, you should do a proper calibration. most people will turn-off those 'automatic' modes in order to obtain consistent result.

does your panel comes with free isf calibration service?

Whats isf calibration ? I have not done that.
May I know how to go about doing it?

isf calibration is done by pro with tools. if your panel doesnt include free isf calibration, you could do a cheaper way - go grab a dvd with thx optimizer and run the content. those movies from pixar should have thx optimizer.

Pioneer Plasma PDP-428XG

Just bought the 428XG HD Ready Plasma TV at Harvey Norman today. Was comtemplating between this and Panasonic 42" Full HD TV. In the end I still got the Pioneer although it costed a bit more. $3398 + 300 (additional 4 year extended warranty) comes with free CX-500 theatre system against Panasonic which is $3200 with $500 Shell voucher.

Hope I made the right choice..... comments please?

Just to borrow your thread...........
I was torn between the Samsung PS42C91HX and the Panasonic 42PV70H
I did research and also observed both at those big retailer stores.
42PV70H selling at $2199 + $20 Delivery Charges with $700 vouchers
and PS42C91HX selling at $1299 + $20 Delivery Charges with no gift.
Both have 5 years warranty.
In the end, I bought the C91HX because I like the colours and aesthetic
from my sight. My mind said it the right budget. My heart falls in love with the
Samsung C91HX.
