No worries ;) just need a little help from Mr. Google sometimes. Get a list of the locations that you'll be visiting. Do you require the metro or more commonly use the JR Yamanote line and decide from there.

I use Google map to guide me from current location to end destination. Depending several options will be displayed. Choose the appropriate one. Maps will guide you on getting to the bus, station or whatever. Very useful. Need data though as free wifi can be spotty.

It's true....and the platform got normal and express train that skip certain station.
Got once 1 of my family board the train and the rest was us was on the platform, lucky the door opened and she ran out as I always thought she can alight at next station to wait for us until I realise the next train we taking skipping station....

Normally if I'm unsure, I use hyperdia and show the japanese the station name and confirm with them am I boarding the right train.

Don't have to ask Japanese. One way to tackle this is to use google map, use point A and point B on google map, choose the route which hyperdia suggest the same, expand the number of stations it is going. With this method, you will know whether it is the right train.

I used Google map last trip.

Select from current location and destination (not station). Depending on the trip maps may display a few options with walking distance, bus, train no or line, platform no, cost etc.

Maps will show you directions to walk to the bus stop or train station. At the final destination it will show how to walk there.

Found it very useful.

hehe, went to kagurazaka and Koenji in the end, as we are oldies. I can imagine it should be a nice town to stroll around in autumn or spring, but not in summer. In fact everything became unbearable during summer. If not because of Mt Fuji...

I can vouch for Freetel. Can tether too, but try not to as the 7days sim is 1GB only. If you are a heavy user of WA and FB, you will like it a lot, as these SNS are free and not counted under the 1GB.
