All these debate on primary school in this thread (and many other threads) as well as other forums like Kiasu Parents just validates my decision to buy a property within 1km of a top school. People can say whatever they want but like me many parents do not believe MOE's rhetoric of "every school is a good school" and very few parents will want to gamble on their children's future when it comes to primary school. Again as I mentioned in another post, whilst there is no guarantees that going to a top primary school will get you good PSLE scores, I'm willing to go the extra mile.

What if MOE decides 1 day to extend 1km to 2km to allow more families to have access to certain primary schools & make these school less ‘exclusive’ ?

Just looking at the risk factors, not that I think this will happen but I think Govt have something greater in mind (just testing sentiment) when they decide to change calculation to boundary instead of a fixed point….

Nobody except you would refer to that so called ranking. I saw it once and totally dismissed it as rubbish. It’s not even worthy for me to point out why it’s rubbish. If you have ever participated in the craze of P1 registration before, you would know Chongfu IS the top school in Yishun. And it has been the top school for many years, probably for at least 2 decades. Yes, you may collect all your materials from the internet but nothing beats listening to the voices on the ground and going through the experience yourself. Do you have any idea which forum all Sg parents rush to for their info during P1 registration? I suggest you go read up that forum’s threads for the different schools during P1 registration instead of giving all your high and mighty theories and opinion here.

I was asking if you meant that Rulang was popular because I wasn’t sure I read your post correctly. And Rulang is just one of the neighbourhood schools. Yes, it’s popular, but many other neighbourhood schools are also very popular. At least no parent had been photographed crying at Rulang when they were balloted out.

If you have ever participated in a P1 registration exercise before, you would know it’s a challenge to get into schools that are above average, not just popular or top, so much so that people would rather send their kids to their alma maters that are far away from their house than to risk getting balloted out at 2C even when the popular school in their own neighbourhood is within 1km.
But very few want to buy 11xx psf, 1.1x m 3b condo unit at North Gaia that would essentially give their kids a place in Chongfu 🙁

The most impt exam is GCE A levels as it determines which Uni & courses you can get into.
PSLE can get into IP school is already 90% gone case already don’t even need to think about A level. That’s why I say PSLE most important. And your PSLE score is more or less born with a 10 point range like 240-250 back in T score years

I know many with PSLE score below 250 still went on to do very well in A Levels/IB & get into prestigious unis & do very well in their professional careers

Maybe parents don't think Chongfu is a top school? Or they don't want to stay in Yishun?

I think there is more chance of MOE dropping the distance to 0.5km than extend to 1km to 2km. Because extending it just means more people balloting and more disappointed parents.

That’d be too much admin work to do to offend those 0.5-1km people. Gov would just leave it as it is

Extending will have disappointed parents but also many happy parents. Dropping will have many very angry parents, and some slightly happier parents.

Extending may help PAP win some more votes, dropping will cost PAP a lot of votes.

if it is extended, those within 1km will be disappointed but generally not enough to make them change their votes

Sorry ah I must add... Rulang is like the next popular school after Nanhua in the West side... There was a newspaper feature some years ago on the parent volunteers balloted out from Rulang. Not trying to defend the school but just to let you know, cos perhaps you are not familiar with that area...

I will admit I’ve never heard of Rulang. Only Primary school I’ve heard in the west are Fairfield, Henry Park, Pei Hwa & Nan Hua

For popular schools like these confirm need to ballot within 1km one, many parents won't risk to buy a property just for a lucky draw chance in 2C. If moving close for 2A or 2B, yes. For 2C? Many will have second thought.

Anyway for NG, main thing is inconvenience rite. Within 1km doesn't mean it's easy to get to the school. I know people who are technically within 1km to some popular school but need to change 2 buses to get there :o

It's ok... Most parents groups or forums only talk about schools in Northeast/East/Central, but you hardly see any discussion re the west. Well maybe like someone said West ah is the ulu ulu low SES area people don't bother :o

I think I said I also know Rulang is popular? In case you are not familiar with the lingo, ‘good’ schools usually mean ‘popular’ also. Parent volunteers getting balloted out of popular schools is not uncommon. Not sure what you were trying to say. I was just trying to say Rulang is not the only popular school around. I not familiar with the area but also familiar with popular schools. What I am trying to say is there are many popular schools around - even if they are not top schools.

Like I said, you only have one chance at P1 registration. There was an article on a parent who was sorely disappointed that the child didn’t get in Rosyth after they purchased a place within 1km of the school. While I may consider to purchase a place for distance priority at Phase 2A for a chance at balloting, I think it’s so not worth it to buy a new place to compete at Phase 2C since the pool of competitors is much larger.
