Has anybody experience intermittent connections drop from 1G to 100Mbps?
I experienced this occasionally & tried resetting the modem & routera few times, reconnect the LAN cables, sometimes it work, but sometimes it does not.
It was having 1G connection speeds & it can abruptly drop back to 100Mbps speeds. I had 3 desktops & all having similar issues, so it is unlikely the desktop issue.
Google & most stated it could be cables, but mine are all CAT6 & pretty new cables.
The speed can abruptly change w/o moving any of these cables, so not so sure it is cabling here.
Any advice? Could it be a faulty modem instead? Router is new, not suspecting that.
Modem brand - Huawei HG8240
Router - Asus AC1200 Gigabit

Try updating the firmware if you haven't updated in a while

It may be the modem faulty, try to ask the ISP to change it.

new cables not necessarily imply good cables. :s22:

cat6 cable has 8 wires inside, if one of them is faulty, you will have only 2 pairs carrying the signal, and the speed is dropped to 100Mbps.

if one of the wires has intermittent connection problem due to wire itself or connector, then you will intermittent connections drop from 1G to 100Mbps

if the problem happens at the same time for the 3 desktop, the likely culprit is the cable between ONT and router, if you have a switch, then the cable between the router and switch is another possible cause.

These 2 cables are very easy to change, change to another good cable and monitor.

if the problem happens not all the same time for the 3 desktops, it could be due to other causes.

If you can proof that it is Modem faulty. I usually request for change of ONT when I recon. For M1 I ever report ONT faulty and support change it.

I tried that with M1 and upon recontract they mention not able to change if its not faulty.

An update, after rebooting my router the 3rd time, out of 3 PCs connected to it, 1 was able to connect at 1G speeds but other 2 were still 100Mbps. This was in the morning.
Later in the afternoon, the PC with 1G speed became 100Mbps.
This is really weird.
3 of the PCs are connected directly to the router in same room.
Have not reset my router due to WIFI required for others at home now.
sigh.....it seems unstable between 1G & 100Mbps connection for my network.

I wanted e 1G speed to do quicker downloads, usually I just live w 100Mbps speeds, so I use power line to connect modem athall to router inside e room.
I ran a 6m Lan cable directly from modem to router, hoping to get 1G speeds. Was able to do it a couple of times, but this round really unstable.
Was planning to get a pair of MOCA to connect via RJ45, they cost quite abit.
But with such intermittent 1G connections now, wits end why it is so unstable.

Speed test results. I already checked my PC settings, they are all on 1G.
It is really intermittent, there were times both PCs were able to connect in 1G speeds, but then sometimes, 1 is fine while other only 100Mbps. Now both 100Mbps.

Buy a network cable tester to check your cable. The device is pretty cheap.
I crimp belden cat 6 flat cable myself. Igb drop to 100mbs. Network cable tester show red on one point. Turn out I did not crimp properly. Crimping cat 6 not easy compare to cat 5 for me.

Looks like the issue is between your ONT to router WAN.

- I know your cable are quite new but have you try to swap the cable between the ONT and router WAN?

- Check the ONT make sure inside no pin break or missing pin
large

yes I know this is a network card. Just wanna show the pin

Have you tried connecting directly to the modem (ONT)? Yes you can do that.

If still 100mbps, try another cables.

If still 100mbps.

Can try to unplug the cable from the computer and wait say 10 seconds then plug in the cable to the computer again. Try a few time.

I have once this faulty cable or cant get a 1gbps speed between the equipment.

Connect from Switch to PC show 1GBPS but when i connect between the ONT to router i getting speedtest result 98+/- on lan and wifi. Until i manage to get a new cable and swap it out. This fixed the issue.

But this faulty cable has no issue getting me 1gbps on my Switch to PC (in my studyroom).

I got a cable tester & check the 6m cable connecting from hall ONT to my router inside my bedroom & it passes. So still unsure why it is unstable to maintain 1G connection, somehow all 3 of my PCs are detecting as 100Mbps.
Sometimes after either reboot e ONT or the router, 1 of my 3 PCs were able to detect 1Gb, but after awhile it drops back to 100Mbps.

My router is brand new so not suspecting it is router. I was also contemplating to get MOCA adaptors to replace e ugly 6m LAN cable from hall to room, but no confidence it is able to maintain 1 Gb network.

Little loss of wat to do next. Any suggestions?
Btw, my router connection to the ONT is ~6m away, this should not be the issue right? The cable tested was fine.
Should I also configure this router to access point instead?
If I get a pair of MOCA, the router in the room, should be access pt or remain as router?
