I'm having similar issue with my network. I'm on 500mbps plan.

I have 2 laptops at home. One is connected to ethernet via cat6 cable and the max speed shown on network properties is 100 mbps. I have set to auto negotiation.

The other laptop is my office laptop max speed is 300 mbps

Any advice on troubleshooting?

Check if you are getting the correct speed from the modem first.

Possible methods to test:
- directly connect each device to the modem (ONT/ONR) and test. This is to eliminate cabling or router/other network device issues
- Manually set the network settings of all devices and network cards to 1000 full duplex instead of auto.

Now this is odd cos when I directly connect to the ONT using my lap top, it cannot detect any internet signal, on my lap, it was always stating as identifying...I reset the ONT still e same.
On the ONT which is a Huawei, PON was lit as well as LAN1 was flashing. Somehow the lap is unable to detect any internet connection I think.
I connect the ONT back to e room router via e 6m cable, everything is back to norm, of course still 100Mbps not 1G.
Why am not able to detect internet when direct connect to ONT? Some config needs to be setup?

How about ONT to router to laptop via a different cable ?
And what is the router model ?

ONT to router to lap is the normal connection & it is working, but at 100Mbps.
Router is Asus AC1200 dual band.
Still does not explain why am not able to get the lap to detect internet when direct connect to ONT. Do I need a router in between?

With a different cable other than the6m cable, it's still 100mbps ?
Put the ethernet settings from auto to 1gbps.

Are you on M1 ? For their ONT, you cannot do on the fly swap, it won't release an IP to the new device unless there's at least a 15-30 mins in between.

Try to update the firmware on your router if it is not updated.

I do not have another 6m cable to test but have made an order for it, so will see if it is a cable issue. Later I will bring my router to the hall & connect with a shorter cable to verify again if it is due to e 6m cable.
All my room PCs, 3 of them already configured to 1gbps from auto.
Yes am on M1, what do u mean at least 15-30mins? U mean after doing changes to the network connections, u need to wait this long to get the changes effect? Like direct connect to the ONT?

Off ONT, wait for 15-30 mins, On ONT and then only the new device will receive internet.

Wow, really. Ok maybe I try it at night then when nobody is using e internet.
Later I try connecting my router closer to the ONT.

Btw my usual connection is via powerline & to my router inside my room, not by the 6m LAN cable. Of course powerline sucks, 70Mbps at most. So sometimes I connect e 6m LAN to hit 1G when am downloading loads of movies, but e 1G is a hit or miss, sometimes can get, most times only 100Mbps.
Hopefully u will not tell me when I switch from power line to 6m cable connection, also need to wait 15-30mins w the ONT turned off to refresh it. Sounds pretty absurd IMO.
But if this is confirm to be the perm solution, I got no choice....

Why would you switch to power line when your LAN cable still provides better speed ( 70 vs 100 ) in the worst case scenario ?

Please stop testing with so many variable in between if not how to find the problem. Keep it simple first.

ONT - router ( update the firmware) - laptop with a different cable

The 6m LAN cable is temporarily ran across floor in the hall ways, so it is not a perm solution to take. This is why usually its power line connection. i may switch to MOCA if am able to fix the intermittent 1G connectivity here.

Will chk the router firmware to see if it needs an update.

Update. I managed to resolve the issue. The first fix which I believed it is, was shutting down e router for a longer period of time, abt 5 mins before turning back on, I managed to get 2 of my 3 PCs with stable 1G connection.
For my PC with issue, confirm not cable as did a swap. My last resort was to wriggle the connection of the cable with the PC Lan port, somehow this resolve it.
never I would have suspect subtle connections could be the cause. Cable is new & MB only 1 year old...maybe just size variations on the RJ45 connector I guess.
Thx all for your suggestions.
