Of course! Must ask!! When you spend so much money, how can they not show the GIA cert...

Looking at the GIA cert will only tell you like 40% of the diamond's quality.. the rest you need to use the different scopes to see the diamond to tell how good it is.

Just to add on, from the certificate, you can at least try to calculate the HCA score of the diamond.

It can make a big difference in the diamond. But then again, you still need to use the other scopes to analyze the diamond becos the HCA score is still limited.

from a branded chain store, 0.5ct D VVS2 $3532, it is normal solitarie range so not ideal/excellent cut. GIA certified.

worth it or kena chop? this price they say is severly discounted. original price $8k plus. i dunno whether can believe not. need ur help man.

Do you have the certificate of the diamond? It's easier to see from the certificate. There's alot of other factors to consider too.. (what's the polish and symmetry, does it have fluorescence? etc).

I don't believe in any shops "original prices". It's always marked up for the sake of giving a big discount.. Like suppose I want to sell Item A for $10, I'll just put the original price as $20, and market it at a 50% discount and sell if for $10. No one buys their diamonds at their original prices anyway..

Congrats! Where did you get it from? The price seems fine for a Super Ideal. Did you see the diamond through the scopes?

I might like to add that I am not well-versed in matters of diamonds and my inspections of the scopes are based on layman eyes.

After going to numerous jewelers and going through trays of diamonds, I've managed to find my own "super ideal cut".

All thanks to all the contributors in this thread and especially with the help of dawnmin's guide:
The Diamond Dictionary: The Super Ideal Cut Diamond

That helped immensely in my search.

I must also commend the patient and professional service at Jannpaul, although ultimately I didn't get one from them as they didn't have much stocks in my budget range for me to choose from and ultimately I did manage to find one that equals what they had in cut quality.

0.58ct, D, VS1, GIA Ex/Ex/Ex, HCA 0.7, hearts & arrows.

I must say, getting a perfect or near perfect H&A pattern is the hardest part of the search, out of 20 shortlisted diamonds with good <1.5HCA scores....only 2 had somewhat perfect H&A. Getting solid hearts without clefts inside the pattern seems to be hardest of all.

Keeping the diamond free from dust for photography is also pretty darn difficult! Left a few specks here and there in the pics that I can't be bothered to clone away..

I bought my ring from Bluenile before and regretted my decision. The diamond hardly sparkle. I would suggest reading up more about diamonds before making any decision. Alot of websites like bluenile operate in drop ship mode. This means they have very limited quality control as they don't physically inspect the diamond.

Between the 2, I would recommend Goodoldgold. At least they focus more on the diamond cut quality.

Beware of all the extra costs when buying online, shipping, taxes, casing and after services (wrong ring size)!

Hi I had done some read-ups and found that we can not only go to the malls to look at the chain of stores such as lee hwa, goldheart etc etc...i also notice about some sites that bros here go to, what are the recommendable sites and are they just for reference or can i buy from them? or should i just head to the malls to settle my proposal ring? i am looking at buying a proposal ring in the next few months! any recommendations?

The 0.42 carat with the halo side diamonds would look close to the same size as the 0.64 carat. I can get a "same size" ring at a lower price if I go with Option 1.

Is the halo design popular? Or would girls prefer a diamond ring by itself?

Woah, really that bad? i was reading thru the GIA certs and some of the diamonds looked pretty good.

I suggest visiting JannPaul for their diamond education session. Its free anyway.. There are plenty that they explain, but all I can say is that you shouldn't buy a diamond just by looking at the certificate. The certificate can show that the diamond is "Excellent" but the actual diamond can still look dull, with heavy light leakages

1st option is a good buy. Considering the colour, the halo design starting price is $750++ so your diamond of .42ct is somewhere around 2.7K.
A .30ct G VS2 starting price is 1.5K, see how much is the price diff, it would be cheaper if it is .38ct.

2nd option is really a very good buy for a .64ct ;-), if you can bargain for .67ct then it is better, you'll have a .70ct feel ;-)
