Would like to seek some opinions..

Option 1
Get a 0.42 carat E VS1 with a halo design side diamonds for $3.4k

Option 2
Get a 0.64 carat G VS1 with plain setting for $4.9k

The 0.42 carat with the halo side diamonds would look close to the same size as the 0.64 carat. I can get a "same size" ring at a lower price if I go with Option 1.

Is the halo design popular? Or would girls prefer a diamond ring by itself?

I would prefer a bigger diamond by itself.. less complicated.. but then not all gers think the same..

The HCA is a good score.. The only problem I can see with the diamond is the star length.. 45% is wayyy to small. The very least you should go for is a star length of 55% minimum if your lower half is 75%. If the star length is too small, the sparkle size of the diamond would be much smaller that it could have been.

More importantly, what is the Cut of the 2 diamonds?? If the 0.42 carat diamond have a better cut quality than the 0.62, I would rather get the the better quality diamond. But thats IMO :)

Hi Bedposthalo, thanks for your comments. I chose this diamond based on the HCA score and the scope images. Was not aware of the star length and its impact on the sparkle size......so am I right to say that even though the cut is excellent, if the star length is too small, the sparkle would be diminished?

Ya, star length does affect the sparkles of the diamond and will diminish the sparkle if it is too small. The lowest acceptable is a 50% star length with a 80% lower girdle facet length. Or 55/75, 55/80. This is the optimal combination.

Try to go for a slightly lower or higher carat weight. Round carat sizes like 0.30, 0.40, 0.50, etc are usually avoided.

Looking at the AGS certificate, there is a feather on the girdle. This can result in micro chipping which drops the carat weight to 0.39 and will greatly affect the value of the diamond.

In search for my diamond, "the particular company" is not what I'm too keen on, based on an experience from my friend.

I was recommended by a few friends who previously bought from them. During the visit, I was offered about 7-8 diamonds and this piece look a bit sparkler, at least to me and my SO eyes, so we settled on it in the end. I'm a total noob to diamonds so we requested for a full diamond introduction. We were given a thorough lesson on diamond appreciation, importance of light performance using various scopes devices like Aset, idealscope, H&A, Lbox, etc. Overall quite happy with this piece and price is also better compared to many other jewellery shops we previously visited.

After going to numerous jewelers and going through trays of diamonds, I've managed to find my own "super ideal cut".

All thanks to all the contributors in this thread and especially with the help of dawnmin's guide:
The Diamond Dictionary: The Super Ideal Cut Diamond

That helped immensely in my search.

I must also commend the patient and professional service at Jannpaul, although ultimately I didn't get one from them as they didn't have much stocks in my budget range for me to choose from and ultimately I did manage to find one that equals what they had in cut quality.

0.58ct, D, VS1, GIA Ex/Ex/Ex, HCA 0.7, hearts & arrows.

I must say, getting a perfect or near perfect H&A pattern is the hardest part of the search, out of 20 shortlisted diamonds with good <1.5HCA scores....only 2 had somewhat perfect H&A. Getting solid hearts without clefts inside the pattern seems to be hardest of all.

Keeping the diamond free from dust for photography is also pretty darn difficult! Left a few specks here and there in the pics that I can't be bothered to clone away..:)

How much did you pay for your 0.58ct? If not from JP, where did you get it from?

1st option is a good buy. Considering the colour, the halo design starting price is $750++ so your diamond of .42ct is somewhere around 2.7K.
A .30ct G VS2 starting price is 1.5K, see how much is the price diff, it would be cheaper if it is .38ct.

2nd option is really a very good buy for a .64ct ;-), if you can bargain for .67ct then it is better, you'll have a .70ct feel ;-)

from which store is this? if you dont mind me asking.

Thanks for your opinion :) The diamonds are from JannPaul, their Super Ideal range.. I was thinking if I should go for a smaller diamond but higher color or bigger diamond with a lower color. I don't mind changing the color and clarity to adjust the price, but won't compromise on the cut.

I would prefer a bigger diamond by itself.. less complicated.. but then not all gers think the same..

Would you prefer a smaller diamond with halo or bigger diamond without side diamonds? And if the overall effect is the smaller diamond with halo looking bigger than the other one..

More importantly, what is the Cut of the 2 diamonds?? If the 0.42 carat diamond have a better cut quality than the 0.62, I would rather get the the better quality diamond. But thats IMO :)

As mentioned above, they are both Super Ideal. If Cut was the same, which one would you go for?

Hmm not a lot...just that it'll appear blue under infra or sth

It will make the diamond appear blue under ultra violet light.. this also means that under sunlight, it will make the diamond appear blue and milky.. Usually people go for fluorescence if they are getting a lower color like J and below so that the milky and blueness can help offset the yellowness.
