No offence taken, its all healthy discussion.

I am fully aware that I am not qualified enough to give advice. You might be confusing "advice" from "opinion". Even my opinion in the last post was to get the Solasfera over the one I linked from JA. I'm sure we're all here to get different opinions from varying experiences of individuals :)

When you abuse the HCA like that without understanding what it really means, you're forming a double edged sword. You end up cutting people. Not everyone here researches thoroughly, but seek advice. You suggested that JA diamond, but it clearly is a very poor performing one, you can tell the huge over contrasting in the hotspots just by looking at the front shot of the diamond. to top it off its obviously leaking light under the table. Then you mention it's a 1.8 HCA score. (Which in the first place is not applicable). But you're giving your opinion that it is your best suggested alternative. People who don't do enough research will blindly follow your opinion based on your "hca approval". which then, your "opinion" hurts them more than anything.

Second this.

Anyone can advise upon collection of ring at JP what are the things to lookout for and what complete set of documents am i entitled to?

Things like image of laser imprint no. To tally with the cert is upon request and not they auto give right?

Any others i can request? Thanks in advance. Super excited!

They will auto show you the diamond serial number to tally the cert. They'll then pass you the cert. Got a free hearts and arrows scope too.

Hi All.

I might be a new member here, but I have been silently reading this thread and its previous two versions with great interest. Kudos to the forummers for posting their reviews and experiences!

I went to JannPaul quite a few times liao (I think got 3-4 times in the last 2 weeks haha) to look for a diamond for my proposal ring. Initially I was looking at their Super Ideal and ideal cuts in the range of 0.7-0.75 E-G VS1-VS2. Was quoted $7,000+ for a 0.7 G VS1 Super Ideal and $5,000 for a 0.71 E VS1 ideal cut. Obtained the scope images, headed home and pondered over the two cuz that's a $2,000 difference in price man! Can make a very nice setting liao haha.

But later, I subtly found out from my girlfie that she prefers fancy cuts, especially heart shape. Fancy cut diamonds are rarely discussed here so I have decided to create an account to start the ball rolling.

JannPaul offered me a 0.73 F VS2 heart shape for $4,600 after discount. Is it a good buy? GIA 6212022536. Based on the proportions alone, is it a finely cut stone?

All inputs are welcome! Thanks guys!

Proportions are good. Table shld be 54-60%, Depth 59-62%, ratio 0.9-1. The closer to 1 the better. Visually, you'll need to check if the heart shape curves are symmetrical.

Thank you for your reply.

At a depth of 54.8%, don't you think it is a shallow cut?? I have asked the sales guy at JannPaul to verify this. Will keep you updated.

Can't decide for the following:

SUPER IDEAL:
0.45 F VVS2

OCTAGON
0.44 F VS2
0.425 F IF
0.423 F VVS2

All in all, price difference between them is around $100

Not much experience with heart shaped diamonds but did come across this article some time back. Might be useful for you - http://beyond4cs.com/shapes/heart/

One suggestion I have is to first consider whether the heart shape will be timeless enough, in the sense that when it's decades down the road, whether your (by the time) wife will find it too girly or young to wear on a daily basis anymore.

Same consideration goes for ring settings btw - personally I would avoid something that is too cutesy because the novelty might wear off after awhile. But of course this depends on individual preferences so it all depends on the individual's personality.

Nope they will just show you the laser inscription under the microscope.

For me, I also used a loupe to check the ring setting to make sure that there are no obvious flaws, as well as to check the prongs and girdle of the diamond to make sure that the prongs are holding on tightly and the the girdle was not chipped during the setting process.

Btw, if you want an photo of the inscription, just take a photo of the screen when they are showing it to you. Alternatively, when I was taking photos of my ring after collection, I discovered that if you use a set of cheap macro tubes with a DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, you can actually capture a photo of the inscription itself. I'll see if I can find an example of that and post it up later.

Not a good buy man. Basically, heart shape diamonds are more on the shape and less on light performance.

And 4.5k is expensive for a .73 F vs2 heart shape diamond.

L/W ratio is more on the type of heart you like.
example -
fat heart

narrow heart

phab_dia_lw_template

And i've read that color & inclusion will show more on these unique shapes diamonds so do not settle for anything less then a vvs2

Oops. I saw it wrongly. Thought the table was 54.8%. Not sure how to advise on hearts, but they aren't meant to perform like the rounds. Maybe it's more about the shape.

Yes, you are right. It is not so much of light performance for fancy shaped diamonds. They are cut for the shape, sacrificing brilliance. The guy from JannPaul said the same thing. It should be fine as long as the heart shape pleases the eye of the buyer (and hopefully the receiver).

To be honest, I also felt JannPaul overcharged significantly for fancy cuts. But since the girlfie "subtly" requested for a fancy cut, I have to pick up her signals la and get her a fancy cut. Like the famous saying goes: A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Haha.

Regardless of the shape, as long as the stone is eye clean then should be fine right?

By the way, thanks for the links! Will spend some time to go thru them.

I believe the heart shape survived the test of time as a symbol of love and romance. This simple shape was around since God knows when haha.

Sometimes I wonder why people rarely consider a heart shape engagement ring. Maybe because it is not as sparkly as a round brilliant...?

13th century actually. I think no one actually knows how the modern heart symbol evolved to become a representation of love since the actual human heart looks nothing like that :s13:

Anyway, nothing wrong with a heart shaped diamond if that's what your gf wants. If I'm not wrong, JP doesn't actually sell any heart shaped diamonds so the one they showed you is probably from House of Hung. They have a rather fluid business relationship so they do cross-recommend stocks from either shop.

Here are the images:

The light performance of their octagons never go wrong bro. The ASET image above belongs to a very fine diamond!

In my opinion, the IF and VVS2 clarities are a waste of your buck if the VS2 is eye-clean. Why pay extra for something which you cannot see? I would suggest the 0.44 option in this case.
