This is my overdue review of JP.
I started out like most of you, searching online for recommendations and reading guides and education on diamonds. We probably all started with google and friends recommendations.
My process was friend recommendation of SK LH etc -> Online education and retailers -> JP & various private jewellers locally
I'm abit KS, and admit I went down quite a few times, but they were always friendly to accomodate me everytime, I was served by Casey-> Sam-> Joy-> Casey

My hats off to all of them for being so patient with all my fickleness and questions.
The difference between ideals from most places and JP is that in most places, anything that comes close in towkosky ideal proportions is classified as ideal already, whereas JP is super nitpicky and consider only the best light return, symmetry, minor facet problems, clarity etc etc(those who went down will know what im talking about). It's much more to their super ideal selection than one expects.

Which is a really a good thing from my personal perspective. It make sense, cut does play the most important role of a diamond appearance. Casey showed me how some slight painting in girdles can even affect a diamond visually, and why they will classify it as ideal. And yes I can tell the difference once he points it out. Would I have noticed before he pointed it out? No. But that's the whole thing I like about JP.

There was a local jeweller who told me to trust GIA certificate and everything else is nonsense. JP shows you every part of a diamond and what happens when it is not "highest performing". Honestly, no other company cares about what they sell you. As long as it's a diamond that has profit.
Of course, end of the day, everyone's sensitivity to appearance is different, and some may not see what JP is pointing out. Online sites that teach about diamonds always say cut is the top priority and I agree. I went down to JP so many times because the first 2 hours wasn't enough to cover all my questions, and I am actually curious about alot of things; small minor details that affects a diamond appearance.

TLDR: I did not end up with a super ideal, I got one of the other special cuts from JP but I cant write it here. My gf browses this as well, she knows what i'm doing but she just doesn't know what is the final decision.
She's very impressed with the first appointment with Casey as well, and left it in my hands. To everyone here, enjoy the journey, do the best you can for your SO, because we want the best for them :)
I work around orchard as well, and anyone who wants to talk about cut, I can share my hard worked findings over lunch break just pm me. My advice is to learn as much as you can while finding your diamonds whereever you are looking for, if you settle for JP, ask questions, they won't avoid questions and are always accomodating.

No need PM bro. I will share the price here itself cuz nothing to hide mar since it is an extremely good deal haha.

I was quoted $4,100 for the 0.74 E IF heart shaped diamond. It has a L/W ratio of 0.90 which makes it look slightly plump. Previously I rejected 3 other heart shapes before settling on this piece haha. Really had the guy at JannPaul a run for his money haha.

I'm surprised at the price based on the carat weight colour and clarity. Expected it to be more

Yes man, me too! Some more that piece is categorised as ideal proportions. Generally, heart shapes are priced lower than round brilliants. But don't expect them to have light performance like their round counterparts lar haha.

If you were to choose between these two settings for my 0.41 vs1 f super ideal cut diamond which would you choose. I just need to top up 150$ to upgrade to setting to the one with side diamond. Is it worth it? Im only talking about the setting not the rock heheheh! :) please advise. Thanks!!!!!

How about an actual one from JP's standard range of settings? This is by far my favourite of all the ones I looked at, I picked this but modified to a 6 prong instead. They should also be able to do this with side diamonds.

Why did u like it? Why 6 prong so it will look like the classic solitaire from tiffany & co? Also if 6 prong it will hide the diamond? Do u think its nice if there are side diamonds or this with 6 prong is just fine. :)

Simple, classy. 6 prongs for extra security for the diamond :s13:
I have no idea why a 6 prong design is equated to tiffany & co, since it's a pretty standard design.

If I were you, maybe I'd stick with a 4 prong since the security of the setting is less of a concern for a 0.4 carat diamond.

I can't answer the rest for you, it's up to your GF's preference. Maybe a picture will be of more use.

A classic cathedral setting with side diamonds should be nice.

6-prong really looks better.

This is good, it looks even better than the usual Blue Nile Sig / Brian Gavin Sig / Whiteflash ACA and i think the price of your piece probably wont be higher than these online ones after GST included. good deal.

Even the cheapest diamond at JP will not look bad. Their QC is quite strict.

I got this stone for 3.9k. 0.62 E VS1. Yea good deal I would say. Might want to squeeze them further when I go meet them for my setting design. :D

For the purposes of academic discussion in case people are wondering why this is considered by JP to an ideal and not a super-ideal (and not to nitpick on your diamond!), the reason why this is not a JP super-ideal is because of the slight cleft in the hearts. As you can see, this doesn't really seem to have materially affected the light performance in the ASET and Idealscope images, but you can see it in the hearts scope image.

Agree with KinoChoco though, this is actually better than a lot of the premium H&A diamonds from online retailers!

Thank for the feedback mero_cwj.

I am not wrong, I thought it is ideal to have small slits on the hearts, no? :s11:

Ehh bro? How come JannPaul is not a good place for good deals? I got a 0.74 E IF heart shaped diamond for my proposal ring at an extremely super ideal price haha. I am customising a Verragio setting.

:s22:
Seem like I keep getting frag...
As I said in my previous post, I think JP is a great place to get the diamonds from them.
Just that, there is a premium into their price for getting good diamonds for you.
And I would definitely recommend them to anyone I know.
However, I still believe, if you are somewhat an expert. And you have the time to source around, you probably can get equally good diamonds at a little cheaper price.

No. Splits in the hearts are considered a flaw. How serious the split must be before it is considered not "super-ideal" depends on the retailer's own internal qc.
See http://www.pricescope.com/journal/hearts_and_arrows_diamonds_and_basics_diamond_cutting for more info.

Wah your reference to getting frag is damn old school man. Actually the fact that I recognise it shows how old we are :s13:
I think if I had an ASET scope, lots of time and thick enough skin to ask private jewellers (with stock unsorted by ASET) to sift through their stock, probably could get something competitive, or near super-ideal, for a lower price. But I think it would take ages of looking before I can find a super-ideal quality, and if it's just a near super-ideal, I think JP's prices are not far off from the other retailers in the industry. I would probably spend more money buying the ASET scope and ideal light set than the savings on the diamond.

No la, I like JP.

They save me a lot of time, which I am too lazy to contribute.

Just saying, for someone who wants a good deal (in terms of pricing). Then finding yourself could get a better deal.. but if you compare amount saved and time spent.. then it gets subjective.

JP does way more filtering than just the cut, even in terms of color they only take higher end spectrum colors. Diamonds can have BGM (brown, green, milky) effect too which the certificate won't show. That's just one example, I remember vaguely. There are more things than just cut they QC on
