Hi guys,

I want to get a proposal ring, but my girlfriend wants morganite instead of diamonds, no side gems as well. She prefers the simple old fashion kind of engagement ring.

Does anyone know where I can find them off the shelf in Singapore? If not, any bespoke jewelers to recommend?

I've contacted Ling Jewellery to make an appointment, but would love to have other options as well. Thanks in advance!

Hi pros... went down to JP and decided to put a deposit down for a 0.63c Solasfera cos i think my gf will like the bling bling... got the scopes sent to me... however i studied them a bit more and have a few concerns... any pros can see if my concerns are legit? thanks in advance for the advice... :s12::s12::s12:

- the measurements is 0.08mm difference from the cert, is that ok?
- for hearts scope, the whole circle appears to be off-center. is that normal?
- for arrow scope, the arrows at 12 and 7 o'clock appears to be slightly broken between the body and head. is that ok?

P.S. was quoted slightly below 6.5k for this rock... and dont know how to embed pic... lol only know how to add link...

Best u check with them directly, most of the time, the pictures of the scope is due to photo taking angle.

Hi Experts here!

My wife to be and I don't really care about the beauty or quality of the proposal ring, except that it be 1 carat. We went around a few shops in Orchard, told the sales assistant about our sole condition, and found one which was quoted slightly less than $5,000 for such a ring.

Should I expect this to be the cheapest I can get, here in Singapore?

Eh. 1C for 5k Abit difficult leh. Can't imagine the quality.

It will seriously look horrible plus yellowish outside jewellery shop lighting. I’ll rather u get Orro or other kind of stone which are cheap

You probably shouldn’t buy that $5,000 ring based on the price because there’s a good chance the cut is lousy. Diamonds in Singapore shops are pretty expensive, so when something is distinctly “cheaper” there’s usually a very good and very unwelcome reason for it. Make sure you look at it in natural/outdoor lighting - the diamond could even be milky.

Suggest you do some research on Pricescope forum, learn information about buying diamonds and decide on your own personal criteria. Asking other Asians in Singapore, you will get answers like “low color is not desirable and is yellowish” because in Asia supposedly culturally only whiter diamonds are desirable. The U.S. is much more welcoming of the K L M colors. I have an L color SI2 diamond and it’s truly beautiful. This is because you can make sure the diamond you purchase is an ideal cut diamond and when the cut is good, face-up that helps the color a lot. I think it’s worth at least checking out the JKLM colors to see if you are happy and comfortable with it.

Most important is cut is king. It should have good Idealscope images and be ideal cut. Then you can, if you are comfortable, go down on clarity, find an nice eye-clean SI2 and go down on color maybe. Again, all depends on your own comfort - look at videos of K and L color diamonds and go to shops like Fonder Diamond to look at them too, ask to look at them in natural lighting. Fonder is another place with quite low prices.

I personally would suggest you make a post on Pricescope and get them to find an ideal-cut diamond on James Allen within your budget. That would be buying online. That will ensure you get the best cut and quality for your budget.

Buy what you like. Most of the people in this forum are especially particular about beauty and quality, so it will be hard to get a straight answer based on your requirements. Very few of us have experience with cheap diamonds.

But extrapolating based on knowledge of the price of beautiful and good quality diamonds, I think $5k for 1ct might be about as cheap as it's going to get. Just make sure you're getting a real diamond I guess.

Hello everyone, I'm thinking of proposing to my gf sometime late this year or next. But finances are tight, so I am only thinking of getting normal plain wedding bands (platinum) if possible, as both of us work blue collar jobs that don't typically allow us to wear diamonds / jewels or w/e.

I would like a plain design, but good quality platinum that can last us a lifetime.

Any budget for a pair between 3-4k? I was looking at the Cartier range but not sure if they are worth the $.

3-4k is not a bad budget...can still get a small proposal ring.

Did she told you she's definitely not keen in diamond ring?
Wedding bands no need go for Cartier if tight on budget la, waste of money on branding only.

She say she doesn't want because cannot wear on a daily basis also.

Any opinions on the Cartier Platinum (Plain) rings or any other alternatives? 3-4k is upper limit liao, of course cheaper the better haha

Some of my friends have the original Cartier bands, they’re nice! Of course, you’ll always be paying for the brand, nothing wrong with that. Some of my other friends got a pair of Cartier trinity rings made by Poh Kim as their wedding bands, not too expensive. Poh Kim can basically make any design you want. They have quite a lot of samples of designer styles according to my friend and can change the design slightly according to your preference. Maybe you can go down and check out their samples.

For me personally I picked out designs on Etsy, showed to my husband, and then got jewellers in Singapore to follow the design that we like. Can look around online to see if any designs appeal to you.

I was also worried my L diamond would be literally yellow 20% of the time. Yet I was surprised to find out that diamonds in real life are far more sparkly than in photos. Like they look more 3D and keep flashing white. I’ve examined my L in many different lighting and photographed it a lot to check for yellow. Really no yellow 80% of the time and ivory the rest of the time compared with my far whiter 5-stone diamond ring - I can’t see a distinct difference between both. So I think diamonds are far whiter than we think. Need to see in real life.

Would encourage OP to go to shops in Singapore to check out the JKLM colors in natural lighting and see if he and his wife are ok with those colors. The diamond you recommended looks like a good option for them if they are happy with J.

Thanks for the info! I saw quite alot of variants on Cartier's website, but am confused about the material. Is there a diff between pink gold, white gold, yellow gold, platinum, etc?

Which is better for daily wear and tear and "lasts longer"?

No difference. Scratches on all of them are bound to happen eventually. All solid gold rings are made to last a lifetime and beyond (you’ll see many antique rings on Etsy and eBay that are still wearable). Polishing every few years will get them to look brand new again.

Platinum vs. white gold: http://www.jogiadiamonds.com.au/blog/white-gold-vs-platinum-what-jewellers-wont-tell-you/

TLDR platinum is heavier, more expensive and not necessary if you are shopping for wedding bands. 18k white gold is harder than platinum alloys. Some people like platinum prongs for holding diamonds.

This is the summary of my overall experience with JannPaul. Sorry in advance, this is going to be a long post!

I've been extremely grateful for what they've done for me. They've done many extra things to help me with my proposal ring and photo collage. I know they already have many rave reviews about them here. I'm chiming in to share my experience and what to expect for newer folks.

Setting up an Appointment
It is recommended to book an appointment with them. They give a diamond education to share with you everything about a diamond. When I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING. Not just the usual basic 4Cs knowledge but way beyond that. Although they mention that the session will take about 1.5hrs. Mine took almost 3 hours. Maybe because I had alot of questions to ask. But be prepared to spend a longer time there.
Before the appointment, they will ask you a list of qns about your diamond preference, etc. If you're going on a weekend, be prepared to book 3-4 days in advance. They're usually fully booked. If you want a more private and intimate session, I suggest to go on a weekday instead. Their weekends are always very crowded.

During the Appointment
William first showed me the Signature cuts like the Super Ideal, Octagon, Solasfera, etc. Then went on about the diamond basics then to the advance stuff like the light performance, why avoid flat carat sizes, diamond brownish tone, etc etc. This is where you decide on your diamond or the type you want. You don't have to decide on the spot. They are not pushy.

The 2nd half of the session is discussing your ring design. They have trays of designs and will tell you advantages/disadvantages of each of the design and so on. If you want to customise your ring, like I did, they will do the 3D renders and stuff before you decided.

After the session, they will send you the scope images of the diamonds you shortlisted.

Choosing the Diamond
This was the scope images of the Octagon diamond I ended up choosing.

a_scopes_comp.jpg

They even brought the diamond outside the shop to show me how it will look in outdoor without those jewellery shop lighting tricks.

Here's a video of my diamond when its sunny and cloudy (later half of the video).

Very very sparkly! There are many things to say about the Octagon and you can research more about it on their youtube.

Choosing the Ring Design
There are 3 ways to choose your ring design with them.
1. From their stock design (this is the most straight forward method)
2. Editing from their stock design (combining different parts of a ring into one or editing parts of their existing design)
3. Full customisation (designing a whole new ring from scratch - which is what I did).

For full customisation, the communication is the key here. I told them what I liked and don't like, and gave them ring designs I found online that I like. They will talk about the features and will make recommendations. After that, they will create a 3D render for you which will be the first draft. After that, you can keep adjusting it until its perfect.

Doing the ring 3D and wax

I had the opportunity to see them doing the 3D as I asked if I could take some photos and videos for my collage. They were very friendly and even helped me further by editing them for me (I'll share more about this later).

Here's a snippet video of them doing my ring's 3D.

After they do the 3D wiring stuff, it will render out your ring design like this,
a_3d_compa.jpg

I requested for them if they could give me a higher resolution in my final 3D design as I wanted to use it in my proposal and wedding video. They were very willing to help and surprised me with this. These designs are done to scale to your diamond size, ring size, etc. They will also model the 3D design on a finger of the same finger size so you can see how it will look on her hand.

a_renner_comp.jpg

After I finalized the 3D render, I had an option to request a wax of it! They made a wax of my ring (reminded me of 3D printing). The wax is mainly to see the physical dimensions of the ring. It doesn't show the full design of it well but you can use it to see if the ring is too thick/thin, etc. And I got to keep my wax for momento!

a_wax_comp.jpg

SuperImposing
They have a cool feature that you can superimpose your ring's 3D on an actual photo of your gf's hand. I had a photographer friend to help me take some hand photos of my gf, then passed them to JP to help superimpose my ring. They worked together with my friend to come up with this.. Very very impressed!

superimpose_1.jpg

si2.jpg

Summary
My overall experience with them was 10/10. If I can rate them higher than a 10, I would. I know I'm not an easy customer to begin with and have many requests. But they've never turned me down and were very willing to help me. It didn't feel like just a jewelry shopping experience but an exciting journey doing up my ring. I definitely recommend anyone looking for a diamond ring to pay them a visit. There are many positive reviews about them for a reason and now I know why.

My only advise is if you want to customize your ring design, start early. They take about 2 weeks to do up the first 3D design draft. Then further changes will take a few days. After you choose the 3D design, it can take afew more days to superimpose your ring on her hand, and 1 week for them to do your ring wax. After everything is confirmed, they will need 4-8 weeks to craft the ring. So depending on how complicated your ring design is, from start to finish, it can take 2-3 months.
For now, I have to patiently wait for my ring to be crafted.

This is a photo with me and Casey in their office upstairs. That is their wax milling machine that does the wax. William wasn't in that day so Casey brought me up to show me how it look like and to add it into my photo collage. Double thumbs up to their service!!
