No difference. Scratches on all of them are bound to happen eventually. All solid gold rings are made to last a lifetime and beyond (you’ll see many antique rings on Etsy and eBay that are still wearable). Polishing every few years will get them to look brand new again.

Platinum vs. white gold: http://www.jogiadiamonds.com.au/blog/white-gold-vs-platinum-what-jewellers-wont-tell-you/

TLDR platinum is heavier, more expensive and not necessary if you are shopping for wedding bands. 18k white gold is harder than platinum alloys. Some people like platinum prongs for holding diamonds.

Very informative. Thanks!

For the Cartier designs made by Poh Kim, do you mean that they took the design and asked Poh Kim to replicate it for a lower price?

Have been seeing rave reviews about JannPaul here. Do they sell good quality wedding bands as well?

Is it free to book an appointment with them for the "diamond education"?

Its free. Try to do some diamond and ring design research before heading down to know the basics first. If you learn everything one shot there, itll be very draining. They go quite advance

New Here

Hi everyone

This is my first post in hardware forum. My bf has recently purchased a 0.74ct diamond from JP at 6.6k and would like to check with the experts here if it's the specs are ok and are we overcharged?

Have yet to receive the scope yet, still waiting for the 3D render.

Appreciate if someone can advise. Thanks.

From the cert alone, we cannot tell tell much besides the basic grades. Will need to see the scopes. That being said, your diamond is from JP, so its already the best of the best. They are the most stringent out of all the jewellers I know. Their prices is competitive for their quality too. So you don't need to worry about their diamonds or price.

If you want to feel more assured, you can share your scopes :) Though I'm pretty sure that it'll be perfect too

Thanks CutiePie :)

I'm worried that the specs is not good from the AGS cert, the arrows do not seem to be aligned. Tried to put the AGS cert link here but can't due to insufficient post.

Will try to get it soonest :s13:

I mean everything in the world is pretty decent quality for wedding bands. No wedding band is going to break or anything, it’s solid gold. It really depends on the exact design if you want to compare quality. A standard, common wedding band is going to look very similar from most shops and you wouldn’t be able to tell if there’s a difference in “quality”. Both are made of 18k gold.

On the Cartier designs, I think so. I doubt it’s identical, but more inspired. The rings look decent from when my friend showed me. I liked them and was going to make a trip down myself. Best for you to go down and look at their samples for yourself.

And yes, JP sells wedding bands at House of Hung, I personally find it more expensive than other places (which is natural since they’re located in Orchard Road), but the designs are nice and modern. Do bear in mind that many jewellers like Poh Kim can make you any design of wedding band from photos, which I didn’t know when I bought my bands, so it may not be worth it to buy from a certain shop just because of their design.

Actually, wedding bands can break one. I know there is those solid and hollow gold types. Alot of chain stores do those hollow gold type that are cheap and can break over time. I've seen solid gold ones that break before too. My friend's one is solid gold and he found a split crack at the bottom.

Solid gold can have porosity problems that are small tiny tiny bubbles inside the gold. Its not visible and you can't see it. You won't know if the ring have porosity problems until you wear them over time and it will slowly appear. I guess its how the ring is made and the workmanship on how the the gold is melted and stuff.

For the plain gold bands, the main points to look out for is
- material type (gold % or platinum). Some 18k gold might contain nickel. So avoid those if you have sensitive skin.
- hollow or solid type.
- porosity problems

If your band got the small diamonds, that one have different qualities too.

Hi Bros, I'm planning to drop by JP at 6pm on a weekday. I checked online that they close at 730pm. Im not sure if 1.5hr is enough for my 1st session with them.

Hi all, I would like some feedback from all you experienced ones out that! Recently I have been doing some research for engagement rings. Dropped by love and co recently and this is the spec of the diamond I’m interested in

Carat: 0.33
Colour: D
Clarity: VS1
Cut: triple excellence (according to them)

Their diamond are not certified by GIA but by de beers.

For the setting my gf likes is on 50% off which brings it to $499. The total cost quoted is around 3.2k +/-

All feedback about the diamonds and certifying company are all welcome and much appreciated! Many thanks in advance!

3.2k for 0.3ct is on the high side. *For that same price, you can get a Super ideal cut quality and a bigger size at JP.

If your SO likes emerald cut then just go for it. Be safe! Haha
Bluenile don’t hold stock. You can narrow down the diamond you want from Bluenile and share the GIA number to local Jewellers like JP. There is a chance that that can get that same diamond for you cheaper than Bluenile.

I thought bluenile cheapest already...local jewelers will be cheaper?

Not really.. emerald cut will be different than the rounds, relying more on the proportions. You find the emerald you like then use that GIA number to compare and get the best price. JP quoted a price for my friend’s heart shape diamond that was cheaper than Bluenile for the same thing.

This is the summary of my overall experience with JannPaul. Sorry in advance, this is going to be a long post!

I've been extremely grateful for what they've done for me. They've done many extra things to help me with my proposal ring and photo collage. I know they already have many rave reviews about them here. I'm chiming in to share my experience and what to expect for newer folks.

Setting up an Appointment
It is recommended to book an appointment with them. They give a diamond education to share with you everything about a diamond. When I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING. Not just the usual basic 4Cs knowledge but way beyond that. Although they mention that the session will take about 1.5hrs. Mine took almost 3 hours. Maybe because I had alot of questions to ask. But be prepared to spend a longer time there.
Before the appointment, they will ask you a list of qns about your diamond preference, etc. If you're going on a weekend, be prepared to book 3-4 days in advance. They're usually fully booked. If you want a more private and intimate session, I suggest to go on a weekday instead. Their weekends are always very crowded.

During the Appointment
William first showed me the Signature cuts like the Super Ideal, Octagon, Solasfera, etc. Then went on about the diamond basics then to the advance stuff like the light performance, why avoid flat carat sizes, diamond brownish tone, etc etc. This is where you decide on your diamond or the type you want. You don't have to decide on the spot. They are not pushy.

The 2nd half of the session is discussing your ring design. They have trays of designs and will tell you advantages/disadvantages of each of the design and so on. If you want to customise your ring, like I did, they will do the 3D renders and stuff before you decided.

After the session, they will send you the scope images of the diamonds you shortlisted.

Choosing the Diamond
This was the scope images of the Octagon diamond I ended up choosing.

a_scopes_comp.jpg

They even brought the diamond outside the shop to show me how it will look in outdoor without those jewellery shop lighting tricks.

Here's a video of my diamond when its sunny and cloudy (later half of the video).

Very very sparkly! There are many things to say about the Octagon and you can research more about it on their youtube.

Choosing the Ring Design
There are 3 ways to choose your ring design with them.
1. From their stock design (this is the most straight forward method)
2. Editing from their stock design (combining different parts of a ring into one or editing parts of their existing design)
3. Full customisation (designing a whole new ring from scratch - which is what I did).

For full customisation, the communication is the key here. I told them what I liked and don't like, and gave them ring designs I found online that I like. They will talk about the features and will make recommendations. After that, they will create a 3D render for you which will be the first draft. After that, you can keep adjusting it until its perfect.

Doing the ring 3D and wax

I had the opportunity to see them doing the 3D as I asked if I could take some photos and videos for my collage. They were very friendly and even helped me further by editing them for me (I'll share more about this later).

Here's a snippet video of them doing my ring's 3D.

After they do the 3D wiring stuff, it will render out your ring design like this,
a_3d_compa.jpg

I requested for them if they could give me a higher resolution in my final 3D design as I wanted to use it in my proposal and wedding video. They were very willing to help and surprised me with this. These designs are done to scale to your diamond size, ring size, etc. They will also model the 3D design on a finger of the same finger size so you can see how it will look on her hand.

a_renner_comp.jpg

After I finalized the 3D render, I had an option to request a wax of it! They made a wax of my ring (reminded me of 3D printing). The wax is mainly to see the physical dimensions of the ring. It doesn't show the full design of it well but you can use it to see if the ring is too thick/thin, etc. And I got to keep my wax for momento!

a_wax_comp.jpg

SuperImposing
They have a cool feature that you can superimpose your ring's 3D on an actual photo of your gf's hand. I had a photographer friend to help me take some hand photos of my gf, then passed them to JP to help superimpose my ring. They worked together with my friend to come up with this.. Very very impressed!

superimpose_1.jpg

si2.jpg

Summary
My overall experience with them was 10/10. If I can rate them higher than a 10, I would. I know I'm not an easy customer to begin with and have many requests. But they've never turned me down and were very willing to help me. It didn't feel like just a jewelry shopping experience but an exciting journey doing up my ring. I definitely recommend anyone looking for a diamond ring to pay them a visit. There are many positive reviews about them for a reason and now I know why.

My only advise is if you want to customize your ring design, start early. They take about 2 weeks to do up the first 3D design draft. Then further changes will take a few days. After you choose the 3D design, it can take afew more days to superimpose your ring on her hand, and 1 week for them to do your ring wax. After everything is confirmed, they will need 4-8 weeks to craft the ring. So depending on how complicated your ring design is, from start to finish, it can take 2-3 months.
For now, I have to patiently wait for my ring to be crafted.

This is a photo with me and Casey in their office upstairs. That is their wax milling machine that does the wax. William wasn't in that day so Casey brought me up to show me how it look like and to add it into my photo collage. Double thumbs up to their service!!

I tried walking in last saturday but they were full. I booked appt this friday instead. How is the price of the octagon diamond like? Is it the same as the round shape ones?
