Didn't know we had this section of the forums, haha....
My time has come, doing research in retail shops and online.
Have a budget of 4-5k, any recommendations?
Its either size or clarity, hahaha....

Nope, visited the usual retailers, saw some online ones including this, whats so special?

Hunting for a 0.5 ct, D-E-F, IF-VVS1-VVS2... hmmm

Jann Paul is known for their Super Ideal Cut diamonds which are more brilliant and sparkly. You're paying for better cut quality, better bang for the buck.

Usual retailers just sell you based on the 4Cs triple EX which are very basic diamond characteristics. A bigger carat doesn't mean much if the Cut is bad.

You work for them ah?
No advertising in here ley....

Anyway boils down to bigger carat over colour/clarity etc

:s13: If I work for them, this thread has many Jann Paul salespersons already :s8: :s22:
I basically took what I've been reading from this thread and reply you.
I didn't get my engagement ring from JP and I don't work for JP too.

Oh, no wonder so many people talking about Jann Paul in here.
I expect this discussion thread to be fair, no bashing of any retailers.

Copy paste one of my earlier posts.

There are 2 broad categories selling products now as compared to the pre-digital era.

1. The Brands
Just trust us. We big brand. Big advertisements. Our stuff good. So many people buy can't be wrong. Big money = big status = big quality (just trust us).

2. The Educators
This is what is considered good. This is why. This is how we do it. Come look behind the scenes. We show you everything. We'll teach you everything. Value for money (we show you why).

For fast consumers who want fast products with minimal brainpower needed, and want to show off to friends, The Brands are still king. Educating yourself takes a lot of time and effort and brainpower, and in the end a lot of your friends still like "huh I don't understand" when you try to show them.

But learning about a product is damn satisfying for ownself buy ownself song. Buy for yourself, enjoy it yourself.

I think The Educators are gaining a lot of traction in the digital age, but probably 90% of people still buy The Brands.

Not that many people bashing brands here. But tendency is people come to forums cos they want to learn. Jann Paul gives you a 1-2 hour lesson on how to judge diamonds. After that you can walk out and don’t buy anything, they don’t hard sell you. That’s the reason why this thread loves them.

Every retailer from brick and mortar store and online will spend time with a potential buyer, not only Jann Paul bah...
You sound like one of their staff....

Anyway, would like some feedback from others.
Between a 0.5ct IF F and 0.57 VVS1 G at similar price, which is better?

0.57 VVS1 G is Naked eye clean. If your gf is looking for size then sure get the bigger carat. But if possible, compare both side by side and see if the 0.07c makes such a big face up difference. I suspect not.

Do you have details about their Cuts? Their light performance?

Hi there. I beg to differ, though I didn't pop by many stores. Bf and I walked around stores looking at both their diamond rings and wedding rings. We started off with Tiff&Co and Cartier. Tiff&Co made me feel like I was at a factory store. Sorry, lacking of words on how to explain better. Cartier only cared about how much budget you could set aside. If I asked to see something of a bigger carat or obviously more expensive, they were reluctant to take it out. Pity though as I thought there was a pair of wedding bands which we liked but due to service not being there, we won't be ever heading back.
Goldheart.. Just couldn't care less..? "I'll take out whatever you want to see." At least can answer when I had question..
Love&Co was really friendly and I felt good atmosphere throughout :) They allowed to view the diamond's arrows but couldn't see the hearts as the diamonds were already set. The arrows weren't that fantastic but I thought as long as the diamond sparkles, that's all that matters. Sadly, I couldn't compare the diamond rings even outside the store.. They have nice wedding pillow then! Haha
There was a wedding band I saw online from SK jewelry which I thought was really lovely so we visited the shop. Indeed, I really loved the whole outlook of it. However, the guy who attended to us was jst very unwelcoming especially after we told him we weren't engaged yet but soon.. And then, the whole time was black face. I stayed long because I really wanted to keep looking at the ring as if to drop hint hahahahha but I really couldn't lol.. And bf said we're not gonna consider to buy from them because the customer service really wasn't there..
Meyson was friendly up till the point when they ask what other shops we've visited. Then they like to bash these shops and sing praises for the ones sold in meyson lol. Pity though as their rings are nice but I don't like bashings.
Common thing among all these shops are that they don't allow pics to be taken (except for cartier) but at least they'll write the model number and price for us.. But I can't picture it when I bring it home that day lol and they also don't allow to bring the diamond/ring outside the shop to view under natural lighting, which I felt was really a pity. And really, their focus is just in the 4Cs. And they'll add on that their diamonds have perfect cut/hearts & arrows but they don't let you verify.?
Then we went to JP and the customer service was just amazing that even bf could not refuse. We only got ideal range though as we felt no need to be "so perfect" and in any case, need to keep within budget :p bf wanted to settle wedding ring then also but our salesperson said to do it after our engagement ring was done, in case I wanted to find a matching ring with it or one which can flush tgt..
Oh we also went to venus tears.. Service was excellent, I believe I could even view 80% of the rings on display HAHAHAHA but none of the diamond rings spoke to me. Their wedding rings were lovely though :) bf eyed one but I liked another one so hoping he would change his mind over the next few months xD

Anyway, don't keep thinking the people here are staffs from JP. You should try go JP, at least get the free diamond education. Really, they won't force you to buy anything. You can even leave after having the education and buy from one of the b&m stores.. But make it your last diamond shop bah

You can check YouTube and maybe even articles. Try to avoid flat carat weights like 0.5 CT. Paying premium for a D colour and IF clarity is not worth especially if the difference between D vs F or even G colour and IF vs VS2 clarity are unnoticeable to the naked eye. For VS1 and 2, probably need to check if eye clean and if there are durability issues eg feather across the girdle. Best bang for buck would be a F VS2 or G VS2 if you aren't colour sensitive. Then just up the carat to one you're comfortable with within your budget :)

Not all GIA EX/EX/EX are the equal. These specs shld get u an ideal cut range:

54-57 table
60-62.4 depth
34-35 crown
40.6-40.9 pavilion
75-80 LGF

I would go for D/E/F VS1/2. Given those two options, I would take the 0.57

Of cos every retailer will spend time with their potential buyer. But why is it so many forumers highly recommend Jann Paul here? Surely they are doing something right that other retailers are not.

And just because someone say something good about a company doesn’t mean that they work for that company. Just like NAS Daily. He say good things about Singapore and everyone accused him of taking money from the Govt. Come on lah. Time to get your head out of the mud. Not everyone have a hidden agenda here. Some people say good things about other company because they really experienced good service and want to share with others. I would expect someone like you to understand this.

Hi guys,

any suggestions for customization of proposal rings?

I am buying a loose diamond and would require a jeweller to place into a basic setting first for my proposal, and thereafter change to a customised setting by da S/O.

so far places i've been to such as JP quoted $500 for basic setting and $1.2k onwards for customisation thereafter.

Decided not to go JP as I was quoted $4,200 for .51, E, VVS2, whereas i found another place that's selling me $2,800 for .51, D, VVS2.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Cant compare the specs like that. I got a 0.83 carat diamond and visually it looks comparable to a friend’s 1.2 carat.
