Hi all experts. Previously I got the advise of everyone here to build a desktop and it has served me well until now. However, I think the desktop would like to get some rest and burnt off one of the component.

One of the cable going to my secondary storage HDD melted and it’s some part of the hdd had turn blacked. As such, I would like to seek the opinion of the expert again once again on the following:

  1. Which PSU should I go for again? 500W or lower?
  2. Would I be able to recover my data from my secondary HDD?

I think My desktop build was as follows:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460
MOBO: ASrock B85-HDS
RAM: Crucial DDR 3 8GB kit
GFX: Powercolor R7 240 1GB OC
ODD: Any cheap OEM
HDD: WD 1TB Blue/ Secondary burnt: WD 1TB Green
PSU: Seasonic S12II 520W
OS: Win 7 64Bit HP

Thank you in advance.

Pretty rare for a SATA power cable to burn. Anyway, you can try cleaning the gold connectors on the HDD and see if the data can be read. I'm not optimistic though. A power surge powerful enough to melt a cable should also have fried something in the HDD.

I suggest you try this using an external USB HDD enclosure. This is to minimize risk of damaging the rest of the rig.

Connectors melt due to bad contact. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I think it is not fair to condemn the brand based on one case of burnt connectors.

Moreover, we still is unsure whether the cause is from the PSU or short is from the HDD.

Avoid seasonic S/M psu, at least this is what I see in this forum.

this is totally untrue, S12ii and M12ii series has the lowest RMA rates based on percentage

we sold this series for a very long time and in very huge quantities from it started, thus you may see it surface here and there on the forum from time to time

Pay premium for evga psu or get super flower if you manage to find. Go for gold series. Personally I don't trust psu costing less than $150 but that's just me.

I do have to agree with this

Though i have seen more Seasonic PSU's fail with my own eyes, it may be attributed to the huge quantity sold.

Most of my friends/colleagues PC PSU that i provide still running well.

M12ii and S12ii most of it already 3-4 years old. Including my Father in law pc.

Other than that my parents PC and lower end build pc using Xigmatek Tauro 400w.

I believe the M12II is the cheapest bronze and modular. Quite nice for the pricing. :D

I would suggest you connect the HDD to a USB HDD enclosure or docking and see if you can recover my data from my secondary HDD. If the circuit board is not burn you have higher chance.

Sample: (You can get them anywhere, Enclose sure make sure is for 3.5" hdd"

- For the PSB if you have your worry you can switch to another brand like FSP // CORSAIR

Seasonic PSU is a very popular brand in SG, always hear in hwz need RMA or replacement.. Is normal....

Get Vios PSU, at least because I never see one chibaboom in this forum.

Very funny, yusoff mentioned avoid seasonic psu but I was kind enough to narrow it down advising to just avoid their lower tier psu. Shouldn't forget that there's a lot of corbell fanboys in this forum.

If you wanna interpret my post in that context then good for you. Enjoy yeah.

My friend's PC that I helped to build 7 months ago had a PSU failure recently...

It was the Seasonic G-550 550W Gold Semi-Modular one. First time, out of so many builds I did, had a PSU failure within a year and its Seasonic... The first seasonic i have built with... That doesn't bode well.

And then when my friend went down to RMA at Corbell, they have no stock. Told to wait for 4 to 6 weeks. That sucks but what to do?

He did email a day before going down and Corbell say come down. They should have replied that they have no stock and to wait for stocks to arrive before RMA-ing. That way, he don't have to go down twice...

We might have some supporters here but it's because of the good brands/products we carry and the services we provide to all the users. If there are no good products or service, there will be no fanboys in the first place lah.

Not sure if this is a seasonic apology tour or bashing season but here's my 2 cents (in dialect of course)

Heng sway.

But hey, if personal experience is used as a qualifying factor then I should be a CWT fanboy

So you yourself admitted posts are not objective right? Sure, condone your supporter to troll posts as long as it is siding with you.

I agree, heng sway. So if you got heng with a product, you tend to stick with it. If you got sway then you avoid it. Many threadstarters here has issues with seasonic psu and yes maybe due to old age of the psu or simply that model has too many sales (though we do not have any data confirming if other brands has lesser sales).

But let's keep it simple. Is ark law's post not a troll post? How is it contributing to TS problem? And corbell think this type of supporting post is glamorous? Lol, ok lor go ahead and take that stand.
