PSU issues

Hey guys,

I recently having a sudden shut down on my pc but i have tried to troubleshoot some how and find that its most probably my psu issues (given that it does not run on paper clip test)

Anyway just a short story. while playing my games and out of nowhere the pc shut down and unable to boot. so i end up opening up my case and test each components that i have available. but if this is so why does my asus mb still have green LED on???

spec:
i7 4770
asus mb (dun the model)
2 x 8gb + 2 x 4gb
1tb hdd
SF ledex PSU sliver 550W

hope that there is any other ways around it? like getting another psu cable to test?

before kaboom, any symptoms or bsod?

3 possibilities
-mobo -visual inspection on the capacitor etc for burnt mark.
-psu -either completely death or on/off.....got smoke burnt smell etc....
-gpu -test with onboard graphic.

high chance mobo if above 2 years old....

possibilities:

1) gfx card overheat causes power supply to auto shutdown, check that your gfx fans are spinning or test by not running graphics intensive programs for a prolong time.

2) power supply overheat causes auto shutdown but pretty unlikely since you said mb led light still on but test that the power supply fan is spinning.

3) motherboard look for "exploded" capacitors.

Download HWinfo64, prime and heaven benchmark.

Power up your PC cool.
Then run prime95 to stress out CPUs, and use HWinfo to monitor the temps and power consumed. If it shuts down, it is related to M/B or PSU.
If it runs fine.
Stop prime95 and now run heaven benchmark to stress out GPU. Monitor GPU temps and power.
If it shuts down, then it could be GPU or PSU.
Lastly, if both of the tests above are running fine, run both prime95 and heaven demo.
This will stress the PSU the most. If this is where it shuts down, then your PSU is the culprit.

No symptoms. Just shut off. Have not thoroughly checked the mobo but there isn't any burn smell. Same goes for PSU. Test with onboard graphic but still didn't boot up.

And yup the mobo is definitely more than 2 years.

hard to say......

when mobo die, it also can't boot up too. just that replacing mobo is troublesome, so we always hope for faulty psu. best is u test with another psu, if still cannot, more or less is mobo

Can you do the smell test on the PSU? Got any burnt smell.

It's very hard to debug the M/B and GPU. You might have to take it to Sim Lim to test.

My humble opinion:
Even if this is a bug, it is not feasible to debug further for u, unsafe and probably dont have all the necessary tools for PSU.
And can't fix it to understand the implications
If i were u, i sent the PSU for RMA...

I suggest only manufacturer is able to debug and fixed what is needed.

One of the possibilities may be psu is in a fault state cause by other components but this is not up to u to clear the fault.

its either your PSU or motherboard after reading your posts so now you need to eliminate whether its the PSU cos its easier to test and replace it.

If you do not have a spare PSU to test then probably you'll have to bring down your CPU tower to SLS 2nd level and look for Nigel but before you make your trip down, better to schedule an appointment with him and tell him your issue and see if he can help you troubleshoot. my Dell XPS 8300 i7-2600k released in 2012 last week power sudden shutdown... replaced it with a new 650W Corsair TX650 and now its still rocking.

its either your PSU or motherboard after reading your posts so now you need to eliminate whether its the PSU cos its easier to test and replace it.

If you do not have a spare PSU to test then probably you'll have to bring down your CPU tower to SLS 2nd level and look for Nigel but before you make your trip down, better to schedule an appointment with him and tell him your issue and see if he can help you troubleshoot. Had another spare board for testing and same thing a Asus board as well(dual core e series I think) and the Led green light is on and nothing boot up when jump starting the pins. As for RMA, I might need to search for it.... hopefully still got warranty though

I know what u r talking about only because I have been doing hands on failure analysis work for a while before. Quite a few here misunderstood you.

sorry for the late update guys, but i have confirm that my psu is dead.

had gone to my cousin house to borrow his spare PC for testing. all components green light except for rams and mobo since his is a 6 or 7 gen pc, but mobo is definitely working.

hiaz...no the problem is rma....have anyone done rma in tech dynamic from june onwards? like how is the appointment?

as for the very weird qns that has been asked is why my asus board still have green light despite it cant even boot up?

Good to hear that you managed to identify the issue. When the PSU is not able to push enough power to start the PC the LED's can still light up. Hopefully after RMA of the PSU everything is good for you
