Hello!

Hi guys!

I've recently graduated from CQU and am now taking my postgraduate diploma from Monash. Patryn was right about locals not caring much about CQU's cert but why I chose it was 'cos it gave me THE most exemptions (which equals a huge monetary discount almost equivalent to 10K!). However, the accreditation led me to being eligible to applying for Monash's PGD.

I'm just gonna share what I know about Australian psychology degrees k?

The thing is, if you're thinking about furthering your studies, the potential postgraduate school you're thinking of joining won't REALLY bother where ur undergraduate degree came from but they'd more likely look at your grades. To be eligible for a GO8 university's honours or PGD (4th year program) to date, you'll need at least a HD avg. (85%)for honours and a Distinction (75%) for the PGD (Pls do check their websites to varify this information). For the masters and PHD program, it is the same, they'll be looking at at least a Distinction average in the 4th year results. For non - GO8 schools it's on a case to case basis. In my opinion, whether it's GO8 or not, usually accredited programs have a rigorous training program since they have to adhere to the accrediting body's requirements.

The main problem is if your undergraduate degree is not accredited by APAC(see http://www.apac.psychology.org.au/). If it's not accredited, you might have to do more foundation modules when u try to take postgraduate studies, which will waste precious time and money. Thus, I advise AGAINST unisim due to this fact. BUT if you're thinking of stopping at a bachelor degree and wish to work in S'pore alone; not interested in working overseas AT ALL, then take unisim's psychology degree by all means. But do take into consideration that unisim's psychology degree is self developed by the school and is a relatively new course. Insofar, even NUS or NTU 4 year bachelor degree program graduates, have to take the APAC accredited 4th year (honours or PGD) before they can further their studies in Australia.

Also, I have to highlight that it's not correct that Unisim graduates can get their degrees accredited in Australia. Only if their degree is accredited when they are taking it, is it considered accredited. Otherwise, it's not. It's not like you can go there to get it stamped or smthin.

eh GO8 = group of 8 ..referring to the universities in Australia, like University of Sydney, uni of western australia

PGD = post graduate diploma, usually taken when the degree holder wants to do his masters but does not hold an honors degree

huh? 4yr degree from Local Uni is an honors already.... Still suck thumb? need to go and take a APAC acccredited honors/PGD before then can do a Masters/Phd? its like redoing a honours yr if one wanna go OZ to do Msc/Phd!!! U sure or not...
if thats the case, 1 can go UK/US/Canada.. they welcome these Local Honors students with open arms so long they have good grades! no need to redo an ACCREDITED 4th yr.

Not true for NUS/NTU and top and mid-tier us/uk/canadian/european uni.
they will probably think "CQU huh??"

as it is, psychology postgrad programmes are more competitive than other fields in the social sciences, don't disadvantage yourself with a degree which doesn't have brand recognition.

Insofar, even NUS or NTU 4 year bachelor degree program graduates, have to take the APAC accredited 4th year (honours or PGD) before they can further their studies in Australia.

as highlighted by patryn, this is utter nonsense lar.

NUS psych honours grads (I mention NUS specifically since NTU and SMU hasn't produced a significant number of psych grads) are welcomed into masters programmes with open arms by australian unis, especially if you can afford the tuition fees!! this is in part because NUS has a very, very good brand name - in terms of research in the psych field and also general international university rankings.

Hello Again

Yes, I do know what I am saying as I did do some research which I'm sharing in hope to benefit you guys. I do know that CQU is not a brand name, but it did give me entry to Monash's PGD, which I feel is good enough. The truth is, I saved quite a lot of money by making these choices and now I can consider going overseas for my masters. However, the information I provided is only relevant if you're interested in going to an Australian university. Otherwise, pls check universities and psychological societies (e.g. APA & BPS) from other countries.

I understand that if you're a local graduate, you might feel a little skeptical about the things that I'm saying. But if in doubt, you may check with the relevant accrediting body itself (APAC). BUT if you're talking about taking a masters that is not accredited by APAC such as a master by research (MPhil), then yes, it is possible to enter with a good NUS/NTU honours. The only thing is that after ur MPhil, you can't really practise either. Erm, as for Unisim, I don't wanna sound unkind, but Unisim is only a few years old, thus its degrees are not international at all. It's not even recognised for immigration.

U missed out this pt lah..
http://www.apac.psychology.org.au/Content.aspx?ID=1193#OSAssess
Q: How do I get my overseas qualifications accredited by APAC?
A: Assessments for equivalency to Australian qualifications are conducted by the Australian Psychological Society (APS). For information on the assessment process, and to download an application form, please visit the APS's website at www.psychology.org.au/membership/qualifications/.

thank god, Doctor of Psychology is always research base.
BTW: I am unable to find info on APAC that indicate Masters by research is unaccredited. Neat thing is U do find research masters getting accredited by APAC. So it is wrong to say Masters by research is unaccredited.

take monash Master of Psychology (Counselling) and Doctor of Philosophy (RESEARCH) its is clearly accredited by APAC listed on line 3, "- Master of Psychology (Counselling)/PhD"
http://www.monash.edu.au/study/coursefinder/?action=search&query=Master+of+Psychology
http://www.apac.psychology.org.au/Content.aspx?ID=1053#postgrad

how do U know UniSIM is not recognised for immigration? any site U can pt to?

Maybe I put in too much information, so it all appears very confusing and not digestible. What I've been trying to share was a product of at least 4 years (but not non stop of cos) of net surfing, emailing and international calls. You may send ur degree transcript to APAC and get it assessed. They will explain what I have beent trying to say (maybe more clearly) and perhaps you may find them more trustworthy as well.

As for immigration, you may check the immigrtion websites of the countries you're interested to go to. Sometimes, they put up the universities they recognise. So far, for local unis, only nus/ntu (or their older names like nayang university), I seen listed.

what u are trying to say even if U send in your NUS/NTU/UniSIM to APAC they will not accredit as equal to OZ program.
FYI: U also don't find big names like Duke, Brown listed in APAC, does that mean they are out the door? need to redo some 4th yr? according to the bible ranking.. our local ivies ranked higher then these names.

the claims u attempt to make from your product of surfing, international call and emailing resulted to something that didn't seem to make much sense.

your info on masters (research) claim is not accredited by APAC certainly didn't shine thru the webby I had listed. Did U missed that info in your yrs of research?

Clearly, based on what I am hearing from you Patryn, you are on the right path. Yes, you do need to study psychology to learn to control this excessive aggression you are currently experiencing. Just to make it official, I do not find it necessary to answer to your questions that are absolutely dripping with sarcasm and will no longer do so.

The information I provided is for people who are truly interested in taking their first degree and a future career in psychology and don't know where to start from. I'm just emphasising the importance of accreditation (which WILL give u international leverage). In fact, most psychologist jobs in s'pore do prefer accredited psychology qualifications. I'm trying to help with facts, not create tiresome controversy.

Hey guys, sorry to bump this old thread, but I noticed nobody here talked about MDIS' Psychology Degree (or rather, their Bsc in Behavioral Sciences with concentration in Psychology).

http://www.mdis.edu.sg/programmes/psychology-degree-singapore

Fully done by Oklahoma City University (MDIS is just providing the location and facilities iirc), with all modules being taught by OCU lecturers.

I'm ORDing in september, and I was a Diploma in Bioelectronics holder with a GPA of 2.8+, and I'm looking at my chances of becoming a practicing psychologist. Obviously not able to join NUS' degree with my not-so-amazing credentials, I was looking at other options, and this one seems pretty good. You can download the full brochure of the course at the website above for further details.

Is this course a good choice compared to the others that were mentioned in this thread? I'm especially comparing this MDIS course with the one given by UniBuffalo in UniSIM, although UB's "O Lvl passes are enough to enter" criteria gives me the heebie-jeebies to be honest.

Hi, you won't be able to be a Psychiatrist with a degree in psychology. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor and you will need a medical degree followed by specialise training in psychiatry.

If you are looking at becoming a psychologist, you would need a master degree in psychology.

Yeah I do realize that I would need at least a Masters to do anything heh, I was never expecting to be a full-fledged practitioner from just a Bachelor's alone :o

And I was mistaken, the term I was looking for was indeed "psychologist" and not psychiatrist, thanks for reminding me! :s13:

Hi. I'm really confused as to which school i should go to. I am not really intending on having a career overseas in future. So which are the schools that can lead me to a masters or even phd?(provided i do well of course) I was considering between JCU, UniSim and Kaplan. Any suggestions?
And also, will schools like NTU accept me for masters if i had a degree from anyone of these schools? Thanks.

If you intend to do postgrad in psychology, u have to decide which branch of psychology u wan to work in in future. To be a counselor (also need see what type), researcher, HR personnel etc etc will determine the type of MSc/PhD and that will reduce the choices of schools since not all will offer the type you want.
